They like to connect and become very close, intimate, and mutually dependent on each other and have shared interest. A friend of mine had experienced conflict with her significant other, and it escalated into violence. They were experiencing the common couple violence. She withheld information from him, with the fear of hurting his feelings, and eventually the boyfriend found out and it escalated from there. While I was not there at the time it started, I received a phone call to come act as a mediator. I do believe that my friends conflict was caused by the chilling effect, which is caused by avoidance and the element of fear. The two ended up verbally abusing each other as I was standing there. Divorce is a common life event in American culture today and though it is prevalent in society, the mental and behavioral ramifications are not diminished. This becomes evident in the case study of “Jane” as she experiences severe depression. Jane is a divorced mother of two children and is struggling to keep herself afloat and support her children from an emotional, mental, and possibly financial standpoint. Nearly 40% of first marriages end in divorce and 10% to 20% of all divorcees suffer quite substantially as a result and as such divorce becomes a chronic stressor (Sbarra, Hasselmo & Nojopranoto, 2012). Extenuating factors of this case are found in the lack of support from Jane’s ex-husband displayed financially and potentially in the involvement with the children. Therapeutic approach is derived through targeting behaviors to be addressed, preferred model of change, and techniques to achieve the best results.
