The novel begins with Mr. Utterson and Mr. Enfield walking down a busy street in London. While they are walking they pass by a door that provokes a memory of Enfield’s. Enfield proceeds to divulge into his witness of a man named Hyde brutally bump into a little girl on the streets. Hyde offers money to the girl’s family after them and Enfield confront him. They see Hyde go into Dr. Jekyll’s door to get a check and his address is on a different street. Curious, Utterson decides to contact old friend Dr. Lanyon about the presence of Jekyll and Hyde. Lanyon expresses that he no longer speaks to Jekyll and that something is terribly wrong with his mind also adding he yet to hear of a Mr. Hyde. Later, Utterson remembers that Dr Jekyll presented him with an agreement of will between him and Hyde that if anything shall happen resulting in the disappearance of Jekyll that Hyde is to accumulate all possessions of his. Utterson is suspicious that Hyde is trying to steal from Jekyll and decides to investigate by catching Hyde outside of Jekyll laboratory. He explains Jekyll’s voice is not the same and how he insistently asks for a type of medicine. They suspect Hyde is in there and not Jekyll and break the door open. When they get inside they see Edward Hyde dead finding a letter from Jekyll to Utterson. Utterson then opens Lanyon’s not where Jekyll asks Lanyon for help. He says to come to his house, break the door, take the first drawer form the top then go to Lanyon’s consulting room where someone will be waiting to retrieve it. The man then asks if Lanyon wants to see what the mixtures do and takes the liquids from the drawer and mix them together. The man then drinks the substance and his face swells and turns black. Before Lanyon’s eyes the man becomes Jekyll. Lanyon narrates he has witness such evil and may very well die from this
