In Medicine, I admire those physicians who commit to treating patients while taking on management roles of the hospital. This is the case with one of my most inspiration role models, Dr. KK Singh, an orthopedic surgeon and the head of department for orthopedics. As a surgeon, he conducts atleast ten surgeries a week, all the while managing the entire orthopedics department at his hospital. The reason I chose Dr. Singh was for his increadible entertainment personality and his impressive leadership skills in leading surgeries and solving hospital issues. The man is filled with energy and humor, which sets an enviorment of calmness and entertainment in an opertation theater that would otherwise be very tense and serious. Even though he was …show more content…
Similar to Dr. Singh, another orthopedic surgeon that I admired very much is Commander Dr. Gacchioni. However, aside from being your everyday surgeon, Dr. Gacchioni was also a Commander for the United States Navy. This man’s leadership requires him to lead a battalion of medical core consisting of physicians, nurses, paramedics and regular naval soldiers during Naval missions. The best part about him is the fact that he is an excellent orthopedic surgeon and a even better commander. I personally met him during a medical mission to Honduras. Ever since, I have followed him and learned a lot about Naval surgery from him. One of the reasons I chose him was because I hope to one day become a surgeon for the US navy or airforce. The reason being that Naval or Airforce surgeons are given the highest surgical training, all the while being the most effective leaders in the military.
Each leader’s style of leadership varies depending on the situation. The challenges leaders face call for a different style of leadership to be executed. For example, Dr. Singh for the most part is an Authoritative leader because he leads people towards a common goal or vision. He states “the end but gives people plenty of leeway to devise their own means” (Goleman (2000)). For example, as a surgeon and head of the department, his ultimate goal is to ensure patients are satisfied with exemplary results. Therefore, in the first department meeting that I got to sit in, he instructed the
In the world, different people have different approaches to leadership. For ample, according to Leebol man (n.d), there are four types of leadership: “leaders who emphasize rationality, analysis, logic, facts and data” “leaders who emphasize the importance of people” “leaders who believe that managers and leaders live in a world of conflict and scarce resources” and “leaders who believe that the essential task of management is to provide vision and Inspiration.”
“As a surgeon you have to have a controlled arrogance. If it's uncontrolled, you kill people, but you have to be pretty arrogant to saw through a person's chest, take out their heart and believe you can fix it. Then, when you succeed and the patient survives, you pray, because it's only by the grace of God that you get there.”-Mehmet Oz. One never considers themselves able to accomplish something great until they meet someone great who has already acquired insight of the world from the other side, the side where all of the talented men dwell. A young girl does not grow up dreaming of becoming an oral surgeon; she dreams of traveling and seeing the world outside of the walls of her small town. I had already had my fair share of adventure, having more surgeries than my mother had by the time I was three months old. I had what specialists call Van der Woude Syndrome. Basically, I was the 1 in 100,000 babies in the world who happened to have this genetic disorder. A key characteristic of Van der Woude Syndrome is a cleft lip. With that being said, I had many surgeons in my lifetime, but one man stuck out. Maybe it was because it was one of the biggest surgeries I had, or maybe, just maybe it was because God had put him in my path to inspire me for greatness.
Leaders are some of the most influential individuals in any society. They have the ability to influence those around them with various leadership styles including coercive, authoritative, affiliative, democratic, pacesetting, and coaching. Effective leaders consistently adapt to the environment around them to either enhance or correct any situation facing them. Within these leadership styles the most effective style has been considered that of the authoritative style. This style brings individuals together, builds self-confidence, and easily adapts to the environment around it.
Before this lecture and assignment I never gave it thought about different leadership styles and what type I have or will deal with in the past, present, and future. This paper also gave me chance to break down how I’m a different leader depending on what situation I’m put in. As of right now it would be difficult trying to put my leadership style because I’m always in different positon that allow be that to specific leader. Right now I’m in a great position that allow me to lead other in the direction that benefit them and the
Styles of leadership have a direct impact on quality in healthcare. A skillful leader leads an organization towards accomplishing goals. Strong leadership is in demand in healthcare. The role of the leader has a great significance on healthcare policies. There are numerous leadership styles applied to healthcare. Among these leadership styles are transformational, complexity, and emotionally/behaviorally intelligent leadership. One leadership style alone will not prove to be successful. In today’s rapidly there is a need leader’s to use all of the tools they have available to be successful, while driving costs down and quality up.
Performing an internet search for a definition of leadership pulls up a plethora of results, each definition slightly different from the last. The readings from the Leadership: Theory and Practice book also draw attention to the multitude of descriptions of leadership as well as the strengths, weaknesses and practical implications for several different leadership approaches. Specifically, trait, skills, style and situational. This paper will outline the implications of each of these models for my leadership profile and will also outline some insights that I have gained at the physician leadership level with my organization for each approach.
Leadership is dynamic, charismatic and fragile all rolled up into one. There are many words that describe leadership and leadership is defined differently by all. As I sit and type this paper I realized the date, 28 Aug. On this date 10 years ago, I was thrust into a roll that would define my leadership style. Hurricane Katrina made land fall over the city of New Orleans (NOLA) on 28 Aug 2005, this storm created havoc and destruction never before seen in the United States. I was in charge of 12 Coast Guardsman and 3 Coast Guard Airboats in which we would crew. Upon arrival in NOLA we were joined up with the 82nd Airborne Division and assigned 12 Scouts from the 2/505 platoon. These men were on the heels of returning from battle overseas and had been home for less than 30 days. Again these soldiers were thrust into action, but now they had a completely different mission. Joining forces with the Coast Guard and conducting door to door urban search and rescue was now the priority. Over the next 27 days we all grew to trust and count on one another and from the deplorable conditions in which we all suffered it lead to my leadership philosophy.
Although orthopedic surgeons specialize in orthopedics, they must also have a thorough understanding of the general physiology and anatomy of the human body. Therefore one must also have a complete understanding of the musculoskeletal system and diseases of the system, as well as prevention and treatment for those diseases. Because of the long work days that being a surgeon requires, surgeons must be able to work through a day with little to no sleep and make decisions when put under intense pressure. Also, because all doctors must pledge an oath to HIPAA, all surgeons must be aware of medical ethics, rules, and regulations in the hospital or medical facility, regarding patients and privacy. This career has a very positive outlook that is rapidly growing. As of 2008, there were a total of 661,400 surgeons in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Services. In The United States, the growth rate for this career is aimed to be 21.8% from the years 2008 to 2018. Employment change is estimated to be around 123,300 new surgeons from the years 2012 to
A series of unexpected events led me to become an orthopaedic surgeon. In the fourth year of medical school, I began to observe the orthopaedic surgeries. My supervisors were using their dexterity to repair the fractures in the bone. After the operation and rehabilitation, patients would be gaining their movement back. It was a process that took time and work, but the end result was outstanding. I would care for patients who once came in pain, watching them leave with smiles on their faces. I wanted to improve the quality of life of my patients as well.
The word leadership bring a lot of images to my mind It is very important for leader in any organization because a manager assists in providing direction toward goals in the organization. As a nurse leader I want to be a leader who eat last, who make everyone feel like they belong to the organization and make people respect me Ruther than fear my leadership. According to James Kouzes and Barry Posner (2012) p1‘Leadership is the ability to energize, mobilize then take people and organization to the place they never been before. I do believe that a true leader will always eat last, which means that they spend most of the time trying to help other people to the right things. My leadership style is based on two exception, which are hardworking and rewards. According to Tom Rath and Barry conchie (2008) page 78 the most leaders rally group of people toward an organizations goals, mission, and objectives. They lead .People follow.
Upon my first day in orthopaedics, I was worried about how my body would respond to watching surgery. Surprisingly, I did not get squeamish or queasy. Instead I was engulfed into surgery. Entering the operating room, all other time seemed to be stilled. It did not matter what else was going on, instead my mind cleared and focused purely on the patient on the table. It was an exhilarating experience that I fell in love with, and made me realize the type of career I want for myself in the
To determine the style of leadership used you need to take in consideration the task, the group of individuals needed and the relations created within the group in order to complete the task. In administrative chain of command, leadership is multidimensional function due to the levels the organization, the variety of tasks and general functions, and an abundant of situations requiring leaderships of some kind. I think that generalizations cannot be drawn because the job of a leader in any organizational setting is not is always changing. The needs of the groups being led, is seldom the same from one situation to the next.
Good leadership is not easy. Leadership is complex, it a job in where one needs to get the best performance from their subordinates through motivation. There are multiple different ways and leadership styles a manager may embody when put in charge to lead others. An exceptional leader needs to be well rounded, needs to use his or her talents to organize. It is imperative that the manager chosen to lead an organization is one that shows exceptional qualities of good leadership. A leader can go about many different styles of leadership. There is no absolute leadership style. Many times leaders can mix what they like best in order to be effective in appropriate areas. The leadership styles are not limited to one or even the ones briefly mentioned. The best thing an effective leader can do is observe the people they are going to be leading. By observing the skills of other subordinates, their maturity level, the different scenarios presented, potential situations, and all the external factors that might influence the organizations, a leader can decide which type of leadership to embody that is the best for the organization and subordinates to have produce optimal performance and
Orthopaedic surgeons require a certain set of characteristics which include being tactful and sensitive. They will need to show tact and sensitivity when sharing difficult news with the patient. This will also help in dealing with patients when the patient thinks they know what is wrong themselves.
I chose Orthopedic Surgery as a career because it upholds principles of living that I stand for and treasure. When trauma, degenerative diseases, or congenital abnormalities affect the musculoskeletal system, Orthopedic Surgeons stand as champions to maintain patients’ quality of life, independence, and dignity of living. In doing so, they give patients a second opportunity to enjoy their life to the fullest.
