Dr. Singh, An Surgeon And The Head Of Department For Orthopedics

In Medicine, I admire those physicians who commit to treating patients while taking on management roles of the hospital. This is the case with one of my most inspiration role models, Dr. KK Singh, an orthopedic surgeon and the head of department for orthopedics. As a surgeon, he conducts atleast ten surgeries a week, all the while managing the entire orthopedics department at his hospital. The reason I chose Dr. Singh was for his increadible entertainment personality and his impressive leadership skills in leading surgeries and solving hospital issues. The man is filled with energy and humor, which sets an enviorment of calmness and entertainment in an opertation theater that would otherwise be very tense and serious. Similar to Dr. Singh, another orthopedic surgeon that I admired very much is Commander Dr. Gacchioni. However, aside from being your everyday surgeon, Dr. Gacchioni was also a Commander for the United States Navy. This man’s leadership requires him to lead a battalion of medical core consisting of physicians, nurses, paramedics and regular naval soldiers during Naval missions. The best part about him is the fact that he is an excellent orthopedic surgeon and a even better commander. I personally met him during a medical mission to Honduras. Ever since, I have followed him and learned a lot about Naval surgery from him. One of the reasons I chose him was because I hope to one day become a surgeon for the US navy or airforce. The reason being that Naval or Airforce surgeons are given the highest surgical training, all the while being the most effective leaders in the military.
Each leader’s style of leadership varies depending on the situation. The challenges leaders face call for a different style of leadership to be executed. For example, Dr. Singh for the most part is an Authoritative leader because he leads people towards a common goal or vision. He states “the end but gives people plenty of leeway to devise their own means” (Goleman (2000)). For example, as a surgeon and head of the department, his ultimate goal is to ensure patients are satisfied with exemplary results.
