“As a surgeon you have to have a controlled arrogance. If it's uncontrolled, you kill people, but you have to be pretty arrogant to saw through a person's chest, take out their heart and believe you can fix it. Then, when you succeed and the patient survives, you pray, because it's only by the grace of God that you get there.”-Mehmet Oz. One never considers themselves able to accomplish something great until they meet someone great who has already acquired insight of the world from the other side, the side where all of the talented men dwell. A young girl does not grow up dreaming of becoming an oral surgeon; she dreams of traveling and seeing the world outside of the walls of her small town. I had already had my fair share of adventure, having more surgeries than my mother had by the time I was three months old. I had what specialists call Van der Woude Syndrome. Basically, I was the 1 in 100,000 babies in the world who happened to have this genetic disorder. A key characteristic of Van der Woude Syndrome is a cleft lip. With that being said, I had many surgeons in my lifetime, but one man stuck out. Maybe it was because it was one of the biggest surgeries I had, or maybe, just maybe it was because God had put him in my path to inspire me for greatness. I cannot honestly say that I remember the first time I met Dr. Demarcus Smith. He is an active member of the Cleft and Craniofacial Team at Children’s Hospital in New Orleans that I have been seeing ever since I was
A medical practice that I have highly considered is general surgery. Both my grandfather and uncle are general surgeons, so the idea of following in their footsteps interested me greatly. Also, the idea of combining science and art, as doctors do, has always fascinated me and called me to this profession since a very young age. Like any doctor, the road to becoming a general surgeon is vigorous. “Surgery is a career for the committed. Much of your life is dictated by the demands of the operating room. The training is long and demanding. But for those who love it, a
The primary job of an orthodontist is to properly align the teeth and ensure that the patient’s facial structure properly grows. An aspiring orthodontist needs about ten years of education. Dr. Williams made a personal promise. He would not allow himself to be seen or thought of as a castoff from the streets. There would be no cliches to define him or his story. He had a dream, and with a fierce determination, steady faith and unparalleled grit he pushed himself through college, then through medical school and on to become a licensed General surgeon.
Ms. T is an eight year old African American female that presents to Dr. Bill’s Kids today with complaints of her tonsils bothering her again. She has been to this office three times in the past three months with complaints of swollen tonsils and painful swallowing. Each time, she has tested positive for Group A Streptococcus also known as GAS. Her mother is with her today and reports that she had strep throat in the past multiple times about two or three times a year, but it is becoming much more frequent. She began complaining of scratchy throat in the morning and at night, but the symptoms quickly progressed to painful swallowing of solids and liquids. Popsicles are the only thing she will even consider eating at this time because they alleviate the pain.

Firstly, in “The Surgeon as Priest” Richard Selzer has a career that a lot of people dream of being, which is a surgeon. Selzer’s career is distinct from a job because there is an advancement in knowledge and experience in the role he plays. A surgeon learns and experiences things while going through situations. Selzer talks about some medical experiences he has gone through while being a surgeon. At first, Selzer talks about how Joe Riker refused to have head surgery but something so extravagant happened. “How dignified he was, as though that tumor, gnawing him, denuding his very brain… No operation… the wife’s sister, she went to France and brought me a bottle of water from Lourdes”(Selzer 199- 200). Joe Riker had a tumor on his head that was devouring his brain, he needed medical help as soon as possible but he always refused to get it. Selzer also talks about how

Many careers start with the letter 'D' but the careers that stood out to me the most are a dentist hygienist and a dental assistant .These amazing careers both have a passion for teeth . They have a vast variety of similarities and some differences.
After being introduced to Dr. Shamis a brief conversation was had. At the start of the interview, it was asked of Dr. Shamis to provide information about himself and his practice. He responded with “I am a licensed clinical psychologist in the states of New Jersey and Pennsylvania (B. Shamis, personal communication, July 6, 2016)” He then explained the types of therapies he is proficient in, his educational background, and how he formed his practice.
College and career readiness for me as an orthodontist means that I can actively listen, speak well, do complex problem solving, and do critical thinking in order to achieve my aspirations. Active listening skills is an important skill you need to become an orthodontist. To be a good active listener, you have to be able to hear instructions. When you’re an orthodontist you need good active listening so you know if your patient is in pain or if the electric instrument you’re using is making the right noise.
Naraghi, the general dentist that I shadowed for almost a year, had always told me to follow a career path that makes you excited to get up in the morning and I would always think about dentistry at that moment. In his office, I set up the room for patients, took their blood pressure and helped them feel more comfortable. I also spent a significant amount of time with Dr. Naraghi learning about dental tools and their uses. He became my mentor and familiarized me with different responsibilities of a dentist. He shone light on how special is the bound between a patient and his dentist as you could always hear him singing when working on his patients and they seemed to love his attitude and sometimes even request songs from
Dek: well I met my wife as you know, but I could’ve gone back to Michigan, but we liked where we were and she had the idea of opening a practice of her own [wife is a dentist as well]. What also kept me here was working with the guys at Saint Francis like your dad and the other hygienists. We were a good crew and we all worked together, and as you know we still keep in contact.
Coming from a long line of family members who have dedicated their lives to the medical and dental field, I also have chosen to become a medical professional. As far back as I can remember, I have heard stories about
Since early childhood, I always believed I would choose a career in the medical field. When I was five years old, I was asked: “What do you want to be when you grow up”? I always responded by saying: “I want to become a dentist”. I began to pursue my lifelong goal of becoming a dentist or doctor after enrolling at the University of Georgia majoring in biology. I interviewed and shadowed many doctors, all of whom specialized in different areas. I learned about the education process of becoming a doctor, daily tasks, their lifestyle, and the hours they worked. However, the more time I spent shadowing and working with people in those fields; the less I believed that a career as a
My senior year, I desired to see more of what life was like as a PA. Thankfully, I was finally within the age requirement to stand in on surgeries. That day I saw the PA make the first cut and suture the last stitch. Both were made with such precision and perfection. It hit me; the PA was an artist just like Rubens, Giorgione, and Michelangelo. The sutures were just as beautiful as the paintings in all the museums to
