Now that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are winding down and more troops are returning to their home bases. In some cases there are discipline problems that we have not paid as much attention to as we should. If you allow that to go unnoticed it becomes cancerous. As you can see higher up is already realized numerous amounts of problem to where he speaks publicly about it. One concern from nearly 27,000 leaders surveyed was lack of discipline. To that end, Drill Sergeants will now be stricter when inspecting beds and wall lockers. Over the past 18 years of the War on Terror, activities like polishing boots and drill and ceremony fell to the wayside, in favor of more bodies being deployed. New standards will reinforce military discipline
Serving in the military is more than simply courage or patriotism; it’s a willingness to make sacrifices, including your own life, for the benefit or continuation of something greater than yourself. Too many forget that their freedom comes with a cost, taking for granted not only what their nation has given them, but also the men and women who risk their lives each day to protect our own. Committing to this life of service after graduation is incredibly important to me, for many reasons, and is what I feel called to do with my future. Primarily, I wish to serve so that I may repay my country for all it has bestowed upon me. In return for a life of freedom, an incredible education, and seemingly endless opportunities, it is the very least I
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to help the readers understand the importance of following directions, especially those pertaining to the school and classroom. Students, who are also soldiers, are held to the same expectations, if not higher, than those obtaining a civilian education and training. At the beginning of the training period, a soldier is required to sign a statement acknowledging rules that they will follow. These rules are set in place to ensure that students are learning at their highest capacity and to prevent chaos and disorder. Appropriate action will be taken for those who fail to follow instructions.
As according to British Army Recruiting Advertisement: “There is discipline. There is drill….when you are relying on your mates and they are relying on you, there’s no room for slackness or sloppiness. If you are not prepared to accept the rules, you are better off where you are”.
In the Marine Corps, there exists an example of heterarchy nestled within a severely delineated hierarchical structure. When Marines achieve the rank of gunnery sergeant (E-7), they must make a decision about the direction of their career path. They can choose to be considered for promotion to either first sergeant or master sergeant. Both are paid at the E-8 level, but have vastly divergent occupational responsibilities. A first sergeant assumes an administrative role as an enlisted advisor to the unit’s commanding officer. Master sergeants are experts in their military occupational specialty (MOS) or job. They serve as enlisted technical advisors to the commanding officer, but also have the flexibility to step into the billet of a first sergeant
We are losing some of our best Machinists and Welders after their first enlistment due to the lucrative options available in the civilian sector and the lack of opportunities to display their innovative nature in the Marine Corps. An additive and subtractive fabricator in the trenches would serve to be an asset to commanders, because he/she will not be limited by technology or lack of expertise. Both of these specialties present an opportunity to exploit manufacturing capabilities. After all, exploitation is a human endeavor and until unmanned technologies take over completely, is it not the Marines using the technologies that are the assets? In the civilian sector, experience is often necessary in most fields; however, machining and
Young people in some countries are forced to serve two years in the military in some countries. I believe that we should not have a similar policy because some people want to do something else other than being in the military, we would have too many people in the military, and it would cost a lot of money. It is not fair to force people in the military. They can respect their countries in other ways. There are a lot of reasons why young people in the United States should not have to serve in the military for two years.

This article identifies the effects of combat exposure on a group of Army National Guard Soldiers and explores the secondary and mediating effects of combat on the soldiers’ spouses and children. The top three questions overall asked in this study was: if the Soldiers were deployed to combat from a Midwestern Army National Guard unit which experienced higher levels of traumatic stress symptoms; whether Soldiers traumatic stress symptoms are correlated with secondary stress experienced by their spouse and children; whether secondary spousal stress symptoms mediate the secondary stress experienced by their children. The way the study was tested was through many series of tests and surveys. Introductory letters, sealed surveys and reminder cards were sent to 1,011 households. The introductory letter described the study and addressed the possible risks and benefits from participating in the project. The survey was mailed out and followed by three reminder cards, which were sent over a seven-week period. However, not all houses received the survey section of the project because the household needed to have an Army National Guard Solider, a spouse living with them and at
The concept of close order drill has been used in some form in every war since the inception of the U.S. Marine Corps, and the practice still proves useful in the twenty-first century. It is much more than the Silent Drill Platoon performing on commercials to attract young adults to the military. This art form is being set aside in Marine Corps after a decade of war; even though drill influences combat efficiency by instilling precision, automatic response to orders and develops assertive leaders.
“The United States Army is structured on several values and principles that it upholds, among these are military bearing, discipline and respect. These principles represents what the organization strongly believes in and governs the most basic customs and courtesies that all its members should abide by, otherwise legal repercussion and punishment is enforced that could ultimately result in separation from the organization.” The standards must be met by Soldiers or they can face a number of repercussions such as, barring from re-enlistment or even separation. Non commissioned officers should always uphold the standards so that all Soldiers know what they are and what can happen to them if they do not meet the standard. “One is to observe a sense of calmness even in the most stressful situations, leaders of the United States Army should maintain their military bearing even in situations where it seems chaotic, out of control or a civilian would respond in panic.” The reasoning behind this goes back to situations where non commissioned officers would have to make fast decisions in a war zone that may impact the lives of their Soldiers. In a battlefield situation their Soldiers are relying on their non commissioned officer to make a quick decision and trusting that decisions made are the best out of all situations given. Non commissioned officers should be able to make big decisions with all his confidence projecting with his military bearing. “A leader should look like a
There are many different ways a person could look at the military and study it from a sociologist perspective. There are several different perspectives within this sociological window that people could use to approach this topic. The military can be a sensitive topic to many people. However, if they were to look at this from a functionalist perspective, one may ask, how does our military, and war, help us understand and keep some of the most important foundations of our country in place? How does it help preserve things such as freedom and democracy? This would be an appropriate question for the functionalist perspective because this perspective is all about usefulness and functionality of whatever it is you are talking about. If you were to
In the United States Army most Soldiers want to know if they can have trust in their Non Commissioned Officers , and they can if they are treated right and the Non Commissioned Officer does what is right and what is legal, at all times. Soldiers want to know and learn a few things from their Non Commissioned Officers. They want to know if the are concerned about them or whether the Non Commissioned Officers focus is up the chain of command and promotion for him or herself or is the Non Commissioned Officers focus down the chain to where the soldiers are. As Non Commissioned Officers they should respect the soldiers the same way they want to be respected. In my opinion Non Commissioned Officers are here to lead, train, and care for
Basic Cadet Training, or BCT, is the first step to becoming an officer in the United States Military. There are many purposes to this training, such as physical conditioning, teamwork building, and military induction. But I believe the greatest purpose behind BCT is teaching newly enlisted cadets what it means to become part of a group that is bound to each other through an honor code. “We will not lie, steal, or cheat, nor tolerate among us anyone who does” were the words that were drilled into my head for six weeks while I survived BCT.
Why does basic military training dehumanize men fighting for our country? To a point where they become suicidal. Thousands of men are drafted each year into the marines. But yet with having to endure hard defenseless trial up to 10 weeks of strenuous training. I selected this movie simply because it reflects the pain marine recruits endure while entering basic training.
In a Military Times article (Lilley, 2016), CSM Michael Gragg, then the CSM of the Center for Initial Military Training, said "The problem that we do have is that right now the generation we have coming in is not as disciplined as
