What is a Nigger? This one term holds hatred that has transcended generations, and though now only whispered in the homes of white elitist and the ignorant, still is at the root of many of the racial issues African American’s face in America. Despite this, within the African American community the word “nigger” has transformed into the word “nigga”. Thus, changing the connotation from a shackle that made clear one’s position on the social hierarchy to a link that has bounded the community spiritually, symbolizing endearment and brotherhood when used by other African Americans. The door on the side of the building into Bitch Media’s headquarters is always locked. For those who would like to go inside, the little haphazardly-taped sign on the door instructs “FEDEX, UPS, USPS + ANYBODY ELSE PLEASE RING THE DOORBELL.” The only way to tell that a powerful feminist publication resides on the second floor of the building is from the small metal sign with “bitch” inscribed. Before Gamergate, a series of personal attacks on female game developers, and the vandalism of the Bitch offices, Bitch’s door would have remained open and unlocked for anyone wanting to use Bitch’s lending library. Now, the staff at Bitch Media cannot take their personal safety for granted. They make sure that there are no obvious markings that might lead to unwanted attention; I parked in front of what Siri told me was the headquarters and walked around the whole building twice before spotting the entrance.

HOSA, Health Occupations Students of America, diversified by culture but united in a single goal, to care for the people of it in the best way possible. HOSA is best explained by the commitment of its members to not settle for adequacy, but strive to formulate new ideals and push for new heights. During this time I would like to explain to you how as a student in HOSA you can innovate- inspire- and ignite to make the impact in the world that you want to be.

A social media app by the name of “Yik Yak” has been creating conflict among several colleges across the United States. Yik Yak is anonymous, meaning that the user can view and post messages to anyone within a one and a half mile radius without giving a username, photo, password, etc. Despite several situations, Yik Yak is mainly harmless, however, recent occurrences have proved otherwise. Racist and sexist posts, as well as some threatening comments have caused students to feel awkward, hurt, and even threatened. The question is, should colleges ban Yik Yak?

Hokule’a began in 1973 with Ben Finney, and many other canoe enthusiasts, who created the Polynesian Voyaging Society with the intention to sail from Hawaii to Tahiti and back. The design for the Hokule’a was made by Herb Kawainui Kane and Kenneth Emory. In 1975, construction of the Hokule’a was finished and by 1976, the roundtrip from Hawaii to Tahiti began. The whole purpose of the Hokule’a, meaning Star of Gladness, was to bring back the skill, navigation, and bravery that the Polynesians had as they sailed to their new home, Hawaii. More importantly, to prove that the voyage of the Polynesians to the islands was not a work of fiction, but a completely possible thing to accomplish.

Being poor means you barely have enough money for the luxuries in life; you can only afford the absolute necessities in life. Being middle class means you can afford to splurge here and there on luxuries. Being wealthier means you live a life of opulence, and you are not concerned with money in the slightest. I do not live an extravagant live nor do I live a life devoid of luxuries. Most of my significant events in my life do not have money involved in them. Whenever I have money I carelessly splurge it on things I will never come to use or I treat myself to candy with it. I loathe saving money in such a manner it drives me insane whenever I save more than a couple dollars. I choose Katie Nolan for this section because she is the polar opposite

Music has been a part of human society for thousands of years, and in each time period, music has been an integral part of culture. During the Middle Ages, numerous instruments were created for the art of music making. One of these instruments is called the hurdy-gurdy. Despite its strange name, this instrument has stood the test of time and still attracts the attention of music-lovers today (Baines, Bowles, & Green, 2001).

“BOOM SHAKALAKA” hollered the announcer at the top of his lungs. Every time an shocking race had been completed in the finals session and a record was broken he hollered that. The weirdest name I have ever heard is tyrannous VonStrangle, Ty Ty for short . Ty Ty who loves to play sports, specifically basketball, is a pretty bad student. He doesn’t listen to what his school teachers say and he is very disrespectful.

In the book, “They Say, I Say”, what they say is in order for someone to become a good writer he or she has to practice being a great writer. A legion of books needs to be read by up and coming writers, even from unknown authors. It is a technique that writers need to keep practicing at, such as cooking, playing the piano, or even something as basic as riding a bike. Expressing their thoughts through writing is important as an author. Some of their thoughts may be controversial and that is okay. Writers should not play it safe to avoid arguments with people that disagree with them. Authors need to recognize that it is okay to agree to disagree. Writers need to understand why they disagree or agree on certain topics they read or write about

When it comes down to it, I am a weirdo. If someone were to take a consensus of what people thought of me, it would defiantly be along the lines of that, however people probably would have come to that conclusion for some other reason all together. The reason I’m talking about here is because I know how to ride a unicycle and juggle. I have had the basic talents for becoming a circus performer since I was seven and I’m still accumulating a repertoire of amusing, yet odd talents that, who knows, maybe one day will be useful.

I promise you that I am extremely easy to live with. There are just a few things that I ask from you in our roommate relationship: communication, honesty, and open-mindedness. These are all things that you can expect from me as well. Over time, I think that we will be able to get a feel of what it’s like to live with each other, and when we do, I think it would be best for us to discuss any rules that need to be established. I’m the type of person that likes to be straightforward when communicating how I feel, and I think that helps to avoid conflict. I am also very openminded and that has a lot to do with where I come from. Hawaii is known for its diversity, so don’t expect judgement from me. I’m always going to be willing to look

I wish I could see “Goofy” again! Goofy was my old best friend about 3 years ago. He and I were like Batman and Super Woman. Goofy was his nickname and we called him goofy simply because of his facial features that resembled those of the cartoon character “Goofy.” His actual name was Robert, but he will always be know as Goofy to me. Goofy was the type of kid who you would look in his eyes and see no type of hope for the future. Goofy and I were raised under the same circumstances but he chose another path to take. Goofy and I were made and molded by the struggle around us but instead of seeing such demising circumstances and choosing to try to make it out, Goofy chose to embrace the struggle as his only path in life. Everyone likes different things and things that are cool to them. People like to do these things called hobys. They are usually something they like or what they want to do when they grow up. Hobys can be stress relieving or calming or even to get your thoughts strait. But some hobbies are bad like for example smoking and drinking. There are all sorts of things that you can like to do or be good at and that can really help you calm yourself sometimes like if you're having a bad day. Some people take their hobbies very seriously and want to be the best at their talent but some people just want to have fun and enjoy what they like and what interest theme.
