Dystopia is common theme which dates hundreds of years in literature worldwide. Dystopian novels and short stories often depict a society repressed by a totalitarian government which comes to power after a cataclysmic occurrence, wielding unforgiving power and control over inhabitants for their own good. These dystopias are often perceived by the average citizen as a normal or unavoidable way of life, sometimes even a better way of life, yet there is often a single person or group of protagonists who question the justification of such living arrangements and threaten upheaval of the utopia sold by the ruling class.

A dystopian novel is a novel that is a futuristic world in which ordinary things are restricted or taken away, thinking they have made a perfect world, A utopia is the opposite of a distopia the utopian world is a perfect world . We are reading 2 books called Farenheit 451 and The House of The Scorpion both of these books are dystopian novels.

The Hunger Games contribute to the sea of dystopian films, within this film social commentary is exposed in the gruesome scenes of murder preadolescents are forced to commit. In the dystopian film, the totalitarian nation of Panem is divided into 12 districts and the Capital. Each year two young representatives from each district are chosen to participate in The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games are televised throughout Panem and are used as part entertainment ,and as part retribution for a past rebellion. The 24 participants are forced to kill one another until there is one left. During this gruesome act the citizens of the Panem are forced to watch. Social commentary is shown throughout the whole movie as subtle evaluations of the society

As a matter of fact, our society also unfortuantely relates alot to this dystopian novel. Arguably, there is no doubt that in our society although, it is illegal to commit any sort of crime of harming other people, but nontheless people still do it, many mindless human beings out there with knowledge that harming someone is a crime, yet they still do it. similarly, to the novel divergent, in our modern day society there is often alot of bribeing, and manipulation between people, including the goverment at times. Overall, the point is that even though a setting just like the one in the dystopian novel divergent isnt as harsh and extreme as our modern day society, if we open our eyes and just look for a moment we would realize how similar these two society can

Divergent is placed into the dystopian literary genre because the novel shows great amount of loss of identity,and government structure. The novel shows a good amount of loss of identity within the character Beatrice later known as Tris. The whole novel is revolved around the government structure, because they are controlling everything everyone does in the factions. Therefore Divergent is placed in the dystopian literature genre.

A dystopia represents the polar opposite of a utopia. Indeed, it could even be considered a failed utopia, a failed ideal society.
