According to the NY based independent publisher Blooming Twig, 30,000 YA books are published annually, generating an annual net revenue of 2.87 billion dollars (Kowalczyk). Despite being a relatively new marketing focus, the genre is clearly not a waste of time or a failure. Certain trends have already emerged and attracted significant fan bases. The young adult genre of books targets an audience of 12- 18 year olds; however, readers of all ages have come to enjoy and follow it. YA Lit is generally narrated by a teenager or young adult and centers on the actions or reactions of a teenage or young adult protagonist. One popular trend is Dystopian societies in which a society that is as dehumanizing and as unpleasant as possible exists, or in some cases there is a society that seems good, but underlying problems or corrupt governments become apparent. This kind of social situation has become increasingly popular since the success of the Hunger Games Trilogy. Examples of popular YA books in which this concept occurs are: The Legend Trilogy by Marie Lu, The Divergent Trilogy by Veronica Roth, and The Giver Quartet by Lois Lowry. According to The Artiface.com, “The concept of dystopian literature is to not only entertain readers, but to let them understand the ideas and characteristics of a dystopian society. These characteristics are shown through our own society, but at a more drastic level. The reader gains more knowledge by finding ways in which the topics the author writes about is relevant to today’s society” (The Rising Popularity).
