A man is sitting in the hospital and he sees the doctor come out of the operation room. As the doctor is walking towards the man, his heart starts to beat faster and faster the closer the doctor gets as the man prepares himself for what he is about to hear. The doctor's mouth opens and the man watches as the doctor slowly starts his sentence with every jaw movement, he says, “I am sorry, we did everything we can”. This is too often said to people with loved ones who smoke. Smoking is the number one preventable death in the U.S. and one way that can help is e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes are a newer technology that in the past few years have begun to rapidly grow and become a very popular thing. Although not everyone may know what the term “e-cigarette” or “vape” is there are many facts that show they …show more content…
E-cigs are a fantastic way to help people quit smoking, because when switching over the smokers will still be getting the nicotine that they crave without all of the terrible and harmful effects on the body. E-cigs may also trick the mind too, by inhaling the vapor the brain may think it is smoke and be much more satisfied with it than just a nicotine patch. There was study done recently of 657 people with 289 using e-cigs, 295 on nicotine patches, and 73 using placebo e-cigs all trying to quit smoking. After six months, they had the test subjects report back whether or not they were able to quit. The data came back very compelling with 21/289 people quit on e-cigs, 17/295 on nicotine patches quit, and 3/73 were able to quit on placebo e-cigs. They came to a conclusion that e-cigs, with or without nicotine, were moderately effective at helping smokers quit smoking, and with equal to if not better quitting rates than nicotine patches (Bullen et al). It is proven that e-cigarettes/vapes can be a significant and if not the best method to quit
One of my first memories in the United States was taking a Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E) class. I was in sixth grade and a top student, as talking about drugs and alcohol and the way they affect us was fascinating to me. This is why, the following year, I volunteered to become a peer educator in Teens Against Tobacco Use (T.A.T.U). For a couple of years, I gave presentations to young students which included facts, demonstrations, and games, to spread the knowledge that tobacco is harmful and that staying away from smoking prolongs life expectancy and increases the quality of life. It should come as no surprise, then, that I consider myself a big proponent of staying tobacco-free and encouraging others to quit smoking as a great way to promote health. I remember watching my mom and sister as they took part in their nightly ritual of smoking a few cigarettes to unwind. “Did you know that a main component of cigarettes is used as rocket fuel?” I would ask them, as I opened the window and they stared back at me blankly. “We know, we know” was the answer every time. I knew that convincing them to quit was no easy task, but I was committed. Day after day, I proudly stated a new fact about the evils of smoking. Finally one day, they quit. At first, they attributed it to the cost. Since we had just immigrated to the United States, the cost of cigarettes was simply not something they could afford. I didn’t believe it. I proudly
Smoking is an addiction that can risk one’s health, which in turn can lead to death. As time advances, both smokers and non-smokers are beginning to understand the harm in this deadly habit because not only does it harm smokers, it can impact anyone who encounters the smoke second-hand. Since the public has become aware of the health risks induced by smoking, cessation tools such as nicotine replacement therapy are being invented to help terminate the desire to smoke. As technology improves, smoking devices like the electronic cigarette are invented and can be considered an effective cessation tool. Electronic cigarettes can deliver low doses of nicotine to ease withdrawal symptoms. Furthermore, as electronic cigarettes increase in
Electronic cigarettes have become very popular in the last few years, which has led both young children and teens to begin using them. There have been various instances in which children, as young as toddlers, have gotten their hands on their parent's electronic cigarettes or e-juice, leading to an increase in calls to the emergency room. The increase was so great that, "over half of the 2,405 calls to poison centers between September 2010 and February 2014 concerned children 5 and under who have come into contact with e-cigarettes" (Are E-cigarettes Safer Than Regular Cigarettes?). The effects of electronic cigarettes so far have not been proven to show any significant damage on the health of adults; however, the effects on children and teens may be more dangerous than one would
The profitable business of electronic cigarettes has raised over $3 Billion dollars annually, vastly spread across over 466 brands which have joined the ordeal. Above all, known as a “gateway drug”, electronic cigarettes have claimed the once-ordinary lives of people, specifically to those who have turned from tobacco cigarettes. What is more, scientists have determined that not enough research has been executed to automatically assume the healthiness of e-cigarettes. Despite this, many have claimed that e-cigarettes, are, and will be the new “healthy” drug, so to speak. Provided that e-cigarettes do not release harmful smoke, they are still not safe for one’s health given that not enough research has been performed on them.
“In 2009, 8.2% of middle school students and 23.9% of high school students reported current use of any tobacco product, and 5.2% of middle school students and 17.2% of high school students reported current use of cigarettes” (CDC, Tobacco Use, Para. 5). Tobacco products are always going to be accessible to the kids of the nation. But e-cigs are still only for men and women above the age of 18, and I.D. is required to purchase anything related to the products. I questioned 50 people who use e-cigs or e-cig products if they ever felt the desire to smoke a regular cigarette since they began using a vape. Out of 50, 36 said that they have never felt the desire to smoke a cigarette, and they didn’t get any nicotine in the juice they used. 10 of the 50 stated that they would rather use their vape, but sometimes they crave a cigarette. The other 4 said that they would rather have a cigarette but are quitting. Some even stated that they use their vape as an excuse to not smoke. They don’t feel as pressured to smoke whenever they are able to use the e-cigs around smokers. Most people who have smoked their entire lives and decided to quit and start vaping usually start out at a high level of nicotine then slowly work their way down to lower levels. “We followed 477 users of electronic cigarettes during one month and 367 users over one year. 22% had stopped smoking after one month and 46% after one year.
This study really opened my eyes to a new prospective on vaping and the use of e-cigarettes. The use of vapes should be taken cautiously and not displayed for our youth to see so vaguely. Though, it has shown me that vaping and e-cigs have a positive effect on helping traditional cigarette smokers stop smoking. These studies will take us much further into the pros and cons of regulating vapes and
Do you know a friend, or have a family member that uses an e-cigarette? The chances of a person has increased greatly. According to the American Lung Association,”both high school and middle school students e-cigarette usage has tripled in one year, increasing from 4.5% in 2013 to 13.4 % in 2014.” With the rising usage rates, e-cigs and their dangers associated with them are impacting more and more Americans everyday. While some people in America believe that electronic cigarettes are safe, Americans should be aware that electronic cigarettes have dangers, including addiction and harmful chemicals.
The Surgeon General, after releasing this report should be ready for an open discussion on tobacco harm reductions. In these discussions, the SG should be open-minded and ready to accept research-based facts that indeed e-cigarettes have many benefits to adult smokers. We hope that the Surgeon General will consider the positive impacts of e-cigarettes and acknowledge that they are a healthier alternative to
Most smokers want to quit and make attempts to do so, but the majority of these attempts fail. Electronic cigarettes are these peoples best choice if they want to quit but the first generation e-cigarettes failed severely. Luckily the second generation personal vaporizers are working out great. Vape pens have a benefit over traditional nicotine replacement treatments, in that they feel and perform like a traditional cigarette, without the smoke, tar and other damaging materials.
An electronic cigarette, or E-cigarette, is a new form of tobacco product that is increasing in its popularity; it allows one to inhale a vapor in the same way one would smoke a traditional cigarette ("E-cigarettes and Lung Health"). Some people believe that E-cigarettes are better than cigarettes for various reasons, and this belief may be true. These claims do not mean, however, that E-cigs should be welcomed with open arms because of the risks still involved in them. E-cigarettes are dangerous, like tobacco, and their risks should be evaluated being that they are not a good choice for anyone. They should not be made accessible to teens because of the many dangers one can see just with a quick glimpse into E -Cigs. The first red flag one
E cigarettes are not a good alternative to cigarettes because users are still putting nicotine in their system. Nicotine is an addictive drug that causes many side effects along with addiction. According to the Department of Behavioral Health (https://onlinelearning.hhdev.psu.edu), Nicotine is a stimulant drug and has the addictive ingredient in tobacco smoke. I will cover below the reasons why E cigarettes are not safe to use rather than regular cigarettes.
The available research on the safety and efficacy of e-cigarette use for smoking cessation is limited. Some consider the evidence contradictory, while others attribute negative outcomes to inappropriate study design. Some medical authorities recommend that e-cigarettes have a role in smoking cessation, and others disagree. Views of e-cigarettes' role range from on the one hand Public Health England, who recommend that stop-smoking practitioners should:- (1) advise people who want to quit to try e-cigarettes if they are not succeeding with conventional nicotine replacement therapy (NRT); and (2) advise people who cannot or do not want to quit to switch to e-cigarettes to reduce smoking-related disease to, on the other hand,
Imagine you are laying in a hospital bed. You wake up, the first thing you see is your doctor and you hear him say, “I’m sorry, you have lung cancer.” This is a situation that far too many people have had to go through; especially those who smoke. According to the World Health Organization, tobacco kills around 6 million people a year. This is alarming and certainly unacceptable, especially when there is an effective, safer alternative. This alternative is called ‘vaping’.
Both the E-Cig and normal cigarettes both contain a common chemical which is called Nicotine. Nicotine is highly addictive substance in smoke if inhaled into the lungs of alveoli, this reaches the human brain in six seconds. Nicotine in slight pile acts as a stimulant to the human brain, and in bigger pile, acts as s depressant, which mostly hinder the flow of signals that’s between the nerve cells in the body. Even bigger doses it’s a life threatening poison that affects the heart, blood vessels and hormones in the human body. When Nicotine gets to the bloodstream it causes the smoker feel calmer. Another chemical present in smokes
One thing that has commonly been agreed upon is that Americans are smoking less cigarettes now, due to vaporizer. About 23% of smokers have tired electronic nicotine device systems and 62% of participants from one study reported using them for no loner than six months (Tackett et al. 868, 870). According to Alayna Tackett et al. research, who are affiliated with the Department of Psychology and Oklahoma State University found, “Exhaled CO readings confirmed that 66% of the tested sample had quit smoking. Among those who continued to smoke, mean cigarettes per day decreased from 22.1 to 7.5” (868). This is pretty remarkable considering the fact the about half a million people die from cigarettes every year, in the United States alone. Participants reported that they viewed e-cigarettes to be, “significantly less harmful than all other tobacco products, all
