A high quality learning environment should have enough (indoor) space for children to explore their interest and supportive adults to engage them to regulate their feelings and behaviors in it. I will be assessing the “Indoor space” from the Space and Furnishings subscale section of ECERS-3 to rate an early childhood education environment. This playful learning environment is located in Discovery bay and it is named Nolan Kindergarten and Nursery School. I choose to focus a 5-6 years old children’s classroom which has two different areas namely dramatic pretend play and reading. In this essay, I will pinpoint the indoor space with reference to ECERS-3 and assess the selected venue pictures to elaborate whether it supports child development.
The physical environment promotes literacy because it organized allowing the children to go explore and everything is in the out and open. The children can go to the book center and pick up a book or the children can go to the tables and explore things there. Each of the classes has a unique way they have everything set up. The preschool rooms have many things to promote literacy by pre(reading) and pre(writing) but the rooms are very tight and jam packed. This room here shows a lot more room and free space.
An academic subject that inspires me is child development. Child development is the period of physical, cognitive, and social growth that begins at birth and continues through early adulthood. I enjoy my child development class because I love learning about children. This class will also help me in the future when I have children of my own, or if I further my career as a child psychologist.
I have visited the Cranbury Presbyterian Nursery School and have observed the classroom in great detail during my last three visits. In this preschool classroom, there are usually 8-10 students present whose ages are from 2 to 2 ½. There are also three adult staff present without including myself. This classroom consists of two rooms which are connected to each other. One room only has a large circle rug and a rectangular table. The other room adjacent to it is slightly larger and contains multiple centers and activity areas, which I will later describe in detail. Bathrooms and sinks are also present in the classroom. And the children have access to a playground with a sandbox outside. For this facilities paper I chose the two
There are many components that must be taken into consideration when designing a curriculum for a preschool. The primary focus is to create an appropriate early learning environment; followed by implementing a curriculum designed to meet the children’s individual needs. According to the Florida standards for the VPK program (4-5 year olds), designing the right environment will help children enhance their personal, and academic development. It is crucial to design a developmentally appropriate environment, in order to help enhance a student’s cognitive, social, and language skills. The environment should consist of: ample spaces, props for dramatic play, development of a schedule that assures a balance of activities and choices,
In early learning environments, children acquire knowledge and develop cognitive, social and emotional, physical and language acquisition skills in the content areas such as language arts, math, science, and social studies in a variety of ways. It is up to the teachers to plan and implement in-depth studies of themes and topics that are meaningful and relevant to the children, being sure to address the development of the whole child while integrating all of the content areas. In the physical classroom the environment should provide students with hands-on opportunities to grow and develop skills, gain knowledge, and have fun as they explore carefully designed learning centers. They should be provided with materials that are related to
ENVIRONMENT- Early years learning framework promotes learning environment for children. This fits really well with the Reggio Emilio approach that demonstrates environment as a third teacher (Carter, 2007). For example; through imaginary play, children play different characters what they want to be. Piaget states that real world sets up with limitation, but to a world of imagination. Our program should be based on create and maintain safe, healthy environment, spaces and places which enhance children’s learning, development, engagement, initiative, self-respect, dignity and show respect for children’s contribution in play ( being, belonging, becoming; outcome -4). Educators always ensure that children get safe environment for example, if there is anything sharp or broken, throw these things away or let the director know if there is anything broken need to be fixed by handyman and complete daily checklist (centre policy, 2016) to remove hazards away from the environment. Check doors, gates, locks and furniture regularly. A chemical which is used for cleaning and hygiene purpose, store them out of children’s reach with master data sheet and let management know if there is any reaction from chemical and if there is wet floor put a WET FLOOR sign on. Environment for staff should be safe and secure also, for example to change nappies there should be stairs for children to climb
One must look at classroom management as a plan for what procedures students will follow throughout the day. Teachers must understand their role in making sure students have a successful experience each day. Wong H. & Wong R., state “Effective teachers teach how to responsibly follow procedures” (2009, p. 165). To have a smooth-running classroom with minimal behaviors, students must be taught classroom procedures from the very first day. In my classroom we have procedures for many things we do each day. Some of these are arrival of children, snack time, lining up and walking down the hallway, and cleaning up centers. I have been teaching these procedures for many years with much success.
Early years practitioners have to support children’s development and learning, through right materials, equipment and resources, also the practitioners needs to work with the colleagues to do better plans and create better play environments. Working with other can create flexible spaces for both indoors and outdoors spaces, so children can set of connections and converted for different uses in diversity of ways. The light is very important for children in early years settings because if the sun comes to child’s face during the play time or story time in the room, it will be difficult for the children to become engage. So the lighting needs to be very good for children to see everything well and it changes the atmosphere.
______ will walk parent(s) and legal guardian(s) will be in the trainning room, across from the classroom in room 239.
A Pre-Kindergarten classroom was observed using the Early Childhood Environment Rating scale scoresheet. The purpose of this paper will discuss one section, space and furnishings. The score sheet was used to observe the children and the classroom. Eight areas where observed, which included indoor space, furnishing, and outdoor gross motor. Each area had a different score, although certain areas scored an excellent seven. Overall the classroom had a great score.
The preschoolers in Star room constantly surprise me with how intelligent they truly are. I came into practicum assuming that the preschoolers would not be able to comprehend many things such as; rules, effective communicating, identifying different categories like colors, animals, textures, etc. My assumptions prior to practicum were based on that fact that I have never really worked with such a young age group before. Therefore, I expected the children to be much slower in developed in comparison to the six-year old’s I have worked with at camp. However, the children have surprised me ever since I entered the room on the first day of practicum. I was in awe when I observed how advanced in development the preschoolers are. One example of when
In Takaharu Tezuka’s TED Talk “The Best Kindergarten You’ve Ever Seen” the viewer learns about a new and innovative way to design a kindergarten. To begin, Tezuka explains that the circular layout of this childhood sanctuary allows the children to interact in a better and more natural way than typical schools. Unlike traditional classrooms, in which adolescents find themselves trapped in for hours at a time, these open borderless spaces allow these young minds to discover the world around them. In addition, one may recognize the real-life skills pupils in such learning environments gain. For example, the condensed annex building students spend time playing in can be hazardous. Consequently, the kindergartners are forced to help one another and guide their miniature frames around this contraption.
During my masters classes I studied research methods and acquired knowledge of current research which deepened my knowledge of research in various curriculum areas. One area I became very interested in was the current literacy research using technology in early childhood classrooms. This led me to conduct a formal action
Throughout this course, I have been writing about a specific student in my class, whom I have been calling Hunter. As previously stated, Hunter was a difficult student. Hunter is a 5-year-old Kindergarten student. He did not attend Pre-School; therefore Kindergarten is his first school experience. Hunter comes from a home with divorced parents. Hunter’s mother is now remarried. His biological father resides with his girlfriend. Hunter’s father and girlfriend recently had a baby. Hunter enjoys working on his grandparent’s farm. He tends to horses, cows, and chickens. Hunter also helps bail hay using a tractor and is permitted to operate a riding lawn mower. Hunter arrives at school on time, wearing clean clothes, and appears to have proper
The action research question that will be explored in this literature review is what happens to my students’ academic performance in my elementary school music class when four or five key points from each class are reviewed at the beginning of class and are made available on the school’s website via video- or audio-conferencing or web-based posting. The foci of this review will be on ways to reinforce instruction to ensure student success, ways to use the internet to personalize learning in order to motivate students, and ways to involve parents more in their child’s learning.
