Early Childhood Classroom Multicultural Education

The population of our country is becoming more diverse and the efforts are directed to make classrooms multicultural. Multicultural education is built on basic American values such as equality, opportunity, freedom, and justice. Multicultural education means creating safe and successful learning environment for all, instilling an understanding of global issues, reinforcing cultural consciousness and intercultural awareness, excluding discrimination and prejudice. Multiculturalism means sharing many cultures. Multiculturalism describes many early childhood classrooms these days. One of the purposes of multicultural programs in schools is to help students recognize differences and similarities among people. Children learn that even though people have different traditions and customs, they share some common traits. Children learn to accept differences and respect people from all different backgrounds and cultures. Multicultural programs develop cooperative social skills. When children can accept similarities and differences, they have an ability to work with others and get along easier with others. They develop multiple perspectives and ways of thinking.
