Thinking About Diversity and Inclusion Paper
Cultural diversity, or multiculturalism, is based on the idea that cultural identities should not be discarded or ignored, but rather maintained and valued. The foundation of this belief is that every culture and race has made a substantial contribution to American history. However, many people remain opposed to the idea of multiculturalism, or cultural diversity awareness, while others often support it and yet have no clear idea of how it should be taught. I do think that being from a military family, I found myself in another circle that shares common traditions and beliefs. I am a Christian and I believe that God is the creator of all. I think that my ethnicity plays into my culture and traditions. For example we all think that we have to prove ourselves to others just because we need to prove a point. Really we are equal in front of god. In addition I am mother of one so the other circles, the circles of moms. I think that African American people are fun to hang around and easy to sometimes talk to. I like that African American people can have fun but at the same time be serious when the time permits it.
The word diversity represents a large group comprised of different people with different experiences. These differences include race, color, religion, gender, national origin, sexual orientation, age, disability, veteran status or citizenship. However, “diversity” does not address how these different people function or work. Inclusion enables us to strive to have all people represented and make all members, partners and employees feel welcomed and valued, not only for their abilities, but also for their unique qualities and perspectives. Diversity means that all individuals showed be respected and valued, therefore you must be aware of the individual’s differences and must not barricade the way they have been cared for. Diversity and inclusion is a journey that companies must take to reap the rewards of being a truly global business. According to the University of Oregon (1999), diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. Diversity is needed in all businesses and organizations. The reason diversity is needed is because different perspectives are needed to look at all the issues in an organization. Diversity gives a fresh look at problem solving and this is where creativity happens. In order for diversity to thrive it needs an atmosphere of acceptance and respect. This paper will look at four definitions of diversity and its audiences from: Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), University of Edinburgh, Havering London Borough Government, and Wal-Mart. The difference between diversity and inclusion are, diversity means the variety of people. They have different ways to think, different culture, ideology, gender, age, education, and others. In a labor environment is important to take in consideration the diversity into the workforce to obtain a higher productivity. Companies evaluate the employees’ skills to determinate in what areas inside the company they will have a better performance on their duties. It is a way to improve the relationships between employers, customers, and vendors. Diversity and Inclusion is a field within Human Resources that focuses on ensuring the cultural sensitivity as well as the cultural inclusion within an organization (RBC, n.d.). More specifically, diversity is both including and respecting differences of ethnicity, gender, age, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, education, and religion (RBC, n.d.). As where Inclusion is the state of being valued, respected, and supported regardless of what diverse background you are from (RBC, n.d.). One metaphor to further understand the difference between the two is: Diversity is being asked to the party, inclusion is being asked to dance with everyone. When working with individuals from different cultures, individuals informally learn the differences that exist between them and their respective cultures (DeCenzo & Silhanek, 2001, p. 29). Often the word “diversity” is confused with political correctness or human equality but it is the understanding of differences between people and how they interact. Diversity is defined as the quality of being different but composed of distinct elements or qualities (Parvis, 2005, p. 15). Throughout history the United States has been known as the “melting pot,” but this concept was a perception not a reality because the melting pot ended up benefiting only white, prominent settlers. Looking at diversity is observing differences and there are a lot of them. For example, male versus female, religion versus no religion, homosexual versus heterosexual, foreign or domestic, republican versus democrat, Caucasian versus African American, Mexican versus Latino, Cherokee Indian versus Choctaw Indian, poor versus rich; and differences could encompass several more pages. We can deny that differences exist or we can consent to differences while discovering from others the assets of dissimilarity. People must learn, therefore, to recognize differences in others – their backgrounds, customs, and work schedules – and appreciate, even celebrate, those differences (DeCenzo & Silhanek, 2001, p. 29).
Starting COMM 1600 – Diversity (United States - U. S) summer, 2018 sounded like a waste of time, an avenue to just make money for the school, and I almost wanted to change my mind from graduating from this University. Getting to know that I have a shorter time to get it done this summer kind of keep me encouraged. More so, scheduled to sit for a long period seems overwhelming, but am glad there was no dull moment when the class begins. Every minute of the class was utilized to discover new things either in history, visual aide (cartons), and discussion across the classroom with everyone participating in sharing experiences and concerns with honest questions to learn more. The instructor has more than enough to share and discussed with every class meeting. Looking back from the first day of class, I can say I appreciate taking the class.
The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences. These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical disabilities, religious beliefs, or other ideologies. It is the exploration of these differences in a safe, positive, nurturing environment. It is about understanding each other and moving beyond simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating the rich dimensions of diversity contained within an individual (University of Oregon, 2011).
Managing diversity and demographical changes in the workplace presents many dilemmas. Confronted with constant change, management, business educators, and organizational consultants continue to meet the challenges of a new and diverse workforce in a number of ways. Diversity can be defined in numerous ways. Diversity includes all the ways in which people differ, and it encompasses all the different characteristics that make one individual or group different from another. When most people envision diversity, the first things which come to mind are age, sexual orientation, race and gender. In Workforce America! Managing Employee Diversity as a Vital Resource, diversity is defined as: “otherness or those human qualities that are different from our own and outside the groups to which we belong, yet present in other individuals and groups.”
