The impact of this encyclical as a whole is going to be quite significant even outside the Catholic church, as it deals with many world issues that affect the entire human population as a whole. Chapter 4 in particular deals with environmental, economic, and social equality issues. Ecology is the study of the relationship between living organisms with one another and the nature or environment in which they live and develop. In this chapter, Pope Francis made it a point to speak on how humans and the environment in which we live in coexist. Francis wants us to understand that “the whole is greater than the part” and there is an important relationship between ecosystems and between the social interaction among humans. As a whole we, the people,
He mentions that multiple challenges that the Catholic Church is struggling with and in addition urgent challenges they are facing. The lack of priest in countries, also the decline of priest in others is a topic covered in this chapter. He also explains how in the present time it is a great deal harder to have a family go to church every Sunday for example, then it was years ago. The last line is a message from John Paul II, the pope mentioned at the beginning of this book on Catholicism. It reads, “Open wide the doors to Christ, and you will find true life.”; . Gerald O’Collins believes that this is the central message that sums up the Catholic religion. The creative use of this line as the ending of the book, shows how much research and effort Gerald O’Collins put into his book. It was a smart way to tie up lose ends and relate back to the introduction.
As global warming intensifies, glaciers melt and forests reduced, more and more people begin to be concerned about environment problem. Environment is the fundamental of our existence,so we need protect environment. Paul H. Rubin in his article “Environmentalism as religion” says “But there is another sense in which environmentalism is becoming more and more like a religion: It provides its adherents with an identity”(399). He thinks environmentalism like a religion, and environmentalism and religion have many same characteristic. I agree Rubin’s opinion. Like religion, environmentalism has difference tribe, environmentalist like a missionary, environmentalism and religion both have food taboos and they also
The “Rise of ecology” was a very interesting and mind refreshing documentary film depicting the 10 different disasters that have devastated our planet. This documentary was a good teachable moment for us to take the necessary measure to ensure the safety of the citizens and the planet. The film also emphasized that we should minimize the amount to pollution that we release in to our atmosphere. We see that its always the people who suffer at the hands of major corporations who are just hungry for profits. The film mentions that these major corporations take the consequences of catastrophic events lightly. They do everything they can to increase the profits even at the expense of their own workers. The movie “Pandora” which I recently watched shares a lot of similarities to the documentary film “Rise of ecology” in a way that took me by a surprise. The movie tells a story of how human error came to cause the malfunction of a nuclear power plant causing the nation to go in to panic mode. The movie starts in an interesting way, a flashback where the main character and his friends were just children making assumptions of what the new mysterious development in their town was all about. Some of the kids responded by saying that the nuclear reactor plant was a rice cooker, another a robot and finally the little girl responded by saying that her teacher told her that “it was a box and that if it was open they would all be in trouble”.
The first one is that pope is not God. That the pope is comparing himself to God on the same level. According to document 1 the author states “that the bishop (the pope) is head of the holy church. And certainly the apostles of Jesus Christ never constrained any man to believe this concerning himself.” It means that the pope is saying that the head of the church and that he is teaching false things about god’s word. The next critical thing is the selling of indulgences.
“You shall not pollute the land in which you live, for blood pollutes the land, and no atonement can be made for the land for the blood that is shed in it, except by the blood of the one who shed it. You shall not defile the land in which you live, in the midst of which I dwell, for I the Lord dwell in the midst of the people of Israel.” Numbers 35: 33-34
The report is about the ecosystem and its effect on human health. That is, it is talking about the “escalating human pressure on global environment” (WHO, 2005).
The face of Climate Change is humanity, its self, and this is a fact that has become less easy to refute, you can’t separate humans from the equation. My grandmother the head of Bitterroot Valley recycling has been saying this for years and maybe it’s because of people like my grandmother, that I’ve become interested in the Paris Summit and in particular Pope Francis’s word on how Ecology is Human. Yes, everyone who believes in climate change knows that we humans are part of the problem, but it wasn’t until the July 2015 Paris summit on climate change has anyone ever said that climate change issues were more than just deforestation or polar caps melting. Pope Francis has taken a stand and claims that humans are ecology and therefore the real
Do you know how many of your County neighbors are barely making ends meet—often not earning enough to cover just one unexpected expense? A recent survey revealed that about 46% of Americans don’t feel they have enough money to cover a $400 emergency expense. Rather than paying it outright, these individuals and families have to put the expense on a credit card or simply cannot cover it.
From 2005-2014, the number of Catholics grew from 1.12 billion to 1.27 billion. The greatest increase wan in the African continent at 41 percent even though the population growth was at 23 percent. Asia has a 20 percent with an increase of population of 9 percent and then America which had an 11 percent increase in Catholics compared to a 9 percent of population.
From the religious stand point, the reader can assume that Pope is suggesting that man needs to be content with where he is and count everything as done in a divine order. He also suggest that it is better to trust in the laws of nature, than to lean to thine own understanding. While seeking wisdom and knowledge is acceptable, as well as having a sense of pride, man needs to respect and adhere to the boundaries that have been created.
The Catholic church lands need to be protected by the National Assembly. Even though I was out sick last meeting, the Decree on Church lands that was passed is a terrible law. How can we, as a government, seize what belongs to the Church of God and then sell that land to someone else? Confiscating and selling the property of the Catholic church is a crime against God. This decree even violates the Revolutionary government's foundational principles that are in the DEclaration of the Rights of Man.
environment. Working as a Park Ranger might not be the most dangerous of law enforcement duties, but there is always a threat.
According to Strayer and Nelson, “The roman catholic church had more power than many empires during the 15th century.” This power was generated from the morality it introduced to its people bringing many together. This brought many people together for a similar belief making the church even more powerful socially and politically. As stated by Strayer and Nelson, “the empires often selected church officials for the catholic church.” This gave the kings a perception of power that would keep them at peace with the power that the church actually had. It also kept the empires from fighting for the power keeping the number of followers strong. Which kept the social and political cohesion between the empires strong. The roman catholic church generated social and political power that was hard to destroy
Ecological Imperialism: The Biological Expansion of Europe, 900-1900, by ecological historian Alfred W. Crosby explores how “portmanteau biota”, helped Europeans to eradicate whole societies in the Neo-Europes (xv, 89). Crosby believes that temperate zones, climates similar to that of Europe, allowed European biota to thrive, which allowed for European expansion. Crosby discusses the Norse invasions and the Crusades as examples of how Europeans were not able to expand. Crosby claims that climate was crucial to European expansion because it allowed portmanteau biota to thrive. The strength in Crosby’s argument is that he introduces ecology as a crucial factor in European expansion. However, he forgets that without technology, ecological
There is a barricade between Christianity and science that has been carrying on since younger religions started being created. There are many reasons that show how conservative Christians harmful effects to the Ecological crisis. They turn a blind eye to the ecological crisis and they have created a hierarchy with them on the top and nature on the bottom. Science has also given humans even more ways to cause harm to the environment, instead of using science and technology for good humans took advantage of what they could do with it to hurt the environment carelessly. Science is only just trying to find ways that could help instead of harm the environment.
