IncomeSocio-economic status (SES) is an expression that differentiate between Humans position in society (Ariani and Chafournia, 2015). This can be described through terms of family income, education, and were someone works (Ariani and Chafournia, 2015). SES is frequently reported by social classes or groups categorized and labeled (Ariani and Chafournia, 2015). Social classes are divided between five branches know as low class, lower class, lower middle class, middle class, upper middle class, and upper class (Ariani and Chafournia, 2015). All societies that are unequal; Human in them try to stand out from the classes lower than them mostly known as the superior (Loughnan et al. 2011). People under the age of 25 that live with parents view their income from what mother and father bring in (James and Lubarsky, 2008). These individual perceive their peers and others to be in certain classes based on appearance, speech and body language (James and Lubarsky, 2008). Whites control a big share of valued resources that are used in everyday life by everyone (Wodtke, 2012). Income inequality is most commonly measured around the world by the Gini Coefficicient, where 0 corresponds to perfect equality and 1 means perfect inequality (Okioga, 2013). Poverty and low economic status allows for people to make poor choose such as premarital sex (Mauyo et al. 2012). Social inequality is a problematic phenomenon that occurs all around the world and affects both the developed and developing nations. It is defined as “the unequal distribution of social, political and economic resources within a social collective” (van Krieken et al. 2013, p. 205). Inequality is closely connected with social stratification, a system of social hierarchy that positions individuals and groups into categories according to social variables such as class or ethnicity (van Krieken et al. 2013, p. 485). This stratification has a significant impact on the opportunity that an individual may have to move up the hierarchy of inequality (Gill 2017a).
It is a commonly accepted that inequality is increasing throughout the globe, with startling statistics such as the recent Oxfam report indicating that the richest 85 people in the world own more wealth than the poorest 3.5 billion people(Oxfam Australia Media, 2014). Inequality is thought of as disparities or gaps, such as the distance between a low income and a high income household, or the ratio of their incomes (Divided We Stand, 2011). Domestic inequality refers to inequality within a country and
Income and wealth distribution: comparing the differences in levels of income and wealth between different social groups help measure inequalities in society. The income is a regular flow of money earned by someone working or from someone’s benefits, pension or their savings. Wealth is defined on property, shares or other belongings that could be sold to make an income. This is very hard to measure accurately and to
Sociologists use the term social stratification to describe the system of social standing. “Social stratification refers to a society’s categorization of its people into rankings of socioeconomic tiers based on factors like wealth, income, race and education” (Griffith et al., 2016 p.187). In the United States IQ is also one of the characteristics of social stratification in terms of personal skills, achievements, and athletic abilities.
The axis of inequality that will be focused throughout this paper is the social class. Social class is defined as a group of individuals who are categorized according to class (i.e. poor, middle, and upper) due to their income, wealth, power, and occupation. Social class is socially constructed by the way we view how much income and wealth a person possess (Ore, 20011a, 10). In reality it is much more than that. According to the text, poverty is not only the shortage of income, but it is the rejection of opportunities and choices that leads a person to a standard way of living (Ore, 2011a, 10). Stereotyping also contributes to it being socially constructed. These stereotypes influence us by defining who is who based on their principles in each class category. This can cause some to feel worthless.
Another factor in a person’s life is their socio-economic status in their culture. This is the status of poor, middle-class, and upper-class. Each is individually important to the culture for support and success. All
Social class is a division of a society based on social and economic status which can include levels of wealth, success, power of authority, and influence. Status is can be defined or grouped having common economic, cultural, or political interests.
This imbalance has not been seen since before 1917 and during the Great Depression, when inequality peaked. Additionally, income inequality is on a continued trend towards a further disproportion. Evidenced by the Gini Index, a “standard economic measure of income inequality” (7) where a score of 0.0 on shows a perfect equality in income distribution and a score of 1 means one person takes all of the income, the United States has one of the highest of income disparities of the 35 members countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) (10), at 0.469 on the Gini index (8). The UN indicates that a coefficient of 0.4 and above is a predictor for social unrest and above 0.5 indicates a severe gap between the wealthiest class and the working
According to the American Psychological Association, “socioeconomic status encompasses not just income but also educational attainment, financial security, and subjective perceptions of social status and social class” (APA). Therefore, socioeconomic class greatly influences health, education, and opportunities. In some instances, these influences can be positive while in other negative. In the graphic novel Persepolis we see the life of a young girl who grows up during the Islamic revolution. Throughout the graphic novel there many aspects that shine light on the main characters socioeconomic class and how she benefits from it. Likewise, in the short story Hands we see a major theme of socioeconomic class, however, in this case the author
America is divided into groups based on many different characteristics. Some of those characteristics may include race and ethnicity, cultures, religions, age, sexual orientations and genders. No matter which group someone defines with based on those characteristics, an individual will be labeled one step further to fit into a social class. In America, the most basic structure of social classes is broken down into upper, middle, and lower class. However, the perspectives of what each of those social structures looks like differs based on an individual’s characteristics. This analysis will examine the structures of the American social class from the perspectives of people of color, women, and gender orientation.
“1]. How does social inequality impact people of different nationalities [ethnicities & races], classes, and genders in society.”
Today in our society, we prefer to consider social status as stratified rank of income amount.
The distribution of income in society is a major aspect of the broader issue of socio-economic inequalities. A clear illustration, and a major cause, of the disparities present in the incomes earned by different sections of society is the
The 21-st century is characterized by the continuous economic downfall. The relationship between race, class and gender should be evaluated to identify the life chances of people to improve their relative position in our socially stratified world. The increased rates of unemployment, homelessness and poverty show that our society requires implementing a transformative approach to reduce social stratification. The term social stratification is applied to identify and asses different forms of inequality that exist in the US society. Patricia H Collins suggests, “while a piece of the oppressor may be planted deep within each of us, we each have the choice of accepting that piece or challenging it as part of the 'true focus of revolutionary change'” (p. 680). Inequality has become a universal feature of our society; therefore, it exists everywhere and concerns race, class, and gender as the key categories of society.
While there are other influencing factors, income is one of the most important aspects when determining ones’ social status. It is often accompanied by family background, but while well-placed connections vary in importance, wealth is a necessary condition in a civilization governed by materialism. As such, ones’ family riches determine the levels of education their off springs may be entitled to, as well as any other assets their children may benefit from. Additionally, factors such as clothing and overall outer appearance are used by other people when trying to place one in a social category, and it certainly cannot harm to have them from a young age. Monetary prosperity and stability are essential factors when deciding one’s place in the social structure since they dictate the amount of comfort and security that individual can acquire and subsequently the opinion that others will have of
