Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak tells the tale of our heroine, Edith Cushing, portrayed by the doe-eyed Mia Wasikowska. In the opening narrative, she states firmly, “Ghosts are real. I know that now.” Fourteen years after receiving a warning from her dead mother to “beware of Crimson Peak,” Edith writes and lives wither her doting yet stern father, Carter Cushing (Jim Beaver.) They’re well off, a fact Mr. Cushing is proud of. In comes Sir Thomas Sharpe and his older sister, Lady Lucille Sharpe (portrayed by Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain respectively.) Sir Thomas begins to court Edith, wooing her despite her father’s and childhood friend, Alan McMichael’s (Charlie Hunnam) apprehensions. After her father’s mysterious death, Thomas sweeps her off to England to live in Allerdale Hall (also known as Crimson Peak.) Edith begins to see just how sinister the Sharpe brother and sister truly are. Secrets are unleashed, Edith’s life threatened, as she …show more content…
When initially introduced during a Ball scene, Lucille stands out in a blood red gown that contrasts with the pale color of the ladies, including Edith, around her. You can tell something is not quite right between the stony glance she gives Thomas after he chooses Edith not only as his dancing partner at the ball, but as the woman he intends to woo. There’s an air of jealousy and you can see Lucille’s declining mental health show up more and more as the film progresses. She snaps on Edith, shows how insanely jealous she is of Edith and Thomas’ marriage, and more dark secrets begin to emerge. Being a rather big fan of Hiddleston, it was Wasikowska and Chastain who stood out the most to me. The story is brilliantly told, from the set designs to the wardrobe. The cast is headed by some of Hollywood’s finest and having never seen a Del Toro film previously to this one, I can say that it definitely sparked my interested to see his other
Individuals look at a home has a place of shelter and a place of refuge after a long day. In Marilyn Dumont case, her home is more than just a home. It’s a sense of serenity. The poem is about a mother who is faced with a huge loss of her child. The loss that happens in the poem are some that individuals in that situation would not want to face alone. Coping with such a tragedy in her case would be through her child carrying in his or her life through the land that the speaker holds so close to her. In the poem “Not just a Platform for my Dance”, Marilyn Dumont uses landscape and nature as a coping method to help find serenity.
Ava Buras played the role of Annie Cannon. She was my favorite actress because she had the best emotion and was absolutely perfect for that role. Sarah Dean played the role Henrietta Leavitt and she portrayed it amazingly. She used her emotions to sell the character and she accomplished that. Jessie Duplantis played the role of Williamina Fleming and she also did amazing. She used hand gestures and face to portray this character perfectly. Katie Kitchen played the role of Margaret Leavitt and she had the best facial expressions. In my opinion she had the very best emotions and I think this because I really felt like I was actually watching real life. As a whole, all the characters did an amazing job and they all had very good emotions.
Overall I found the movie to be quite interesting and exciting at times but a bit slow in others. The story itself was very clear to me and didn’t cause any confusion. It had a good flow also, just as you were on the verge of falling into boredom with a scene they switched it up on you to keep you
To start off I felt this was a good movie overall. One scene I felt that had stood out was when the black man was showed the pattern on the cloth showing that there was a house he can escape to with his daughter. This scene kind of gave us a hint that many people probably knew about the house but was too scared to escape in fear of being caught. I felt that the black man was very determined to get his daughter away safely no matter what so much that he went in to unknown water just to hide from the slave masters. I was a little confused at the begging because I thought slave work consisted of picking cotton or some other hardship. There was a scene that stood out to me on a personal note. The scene were the black man was hanged and his daughter was watching as this occurred.
My favorite scene in the movie is when Emily Leighton denied help from her husband by not using the lawyer he sent or allowing him from posting bound and etc. I really liked the statement she gave to the press “In prison or out American women are not free”. I know this character was developed for the film however I think she was a great representative for what I would consider to be the “average” woman during the 1910s becoming involved in the suffrage movement. According to 1910s societal standards Emily had done everything properly she married well by being married Senator Leighton, had children, and probably took care of household affairs that a woman during this era typically would.
Elle Woods has a personality that nothing can comparer to. She has a since of style and humor that sets her apart from all the other plain characters in the movie. She does not care if people usually wear black as lawyers, she is going to rock her pink suit with match accessories. In the movie, while talking to an inmate who was wearing orange, she even states, “Whoever said orange was the new pink, was seriously disturbed” Elle Woods does not care is people judge her, all she cares about is being original, and that’s another quality I like
Everything looked like what you would expect of the late 1800’s. Horse drawn carriages, suspenders, paved streets, it all really added to the movie and helped the story along instead of getting in the way. Something that I think genuinely worked in their favor was the contrast between the wealthy and the poor. Take David’s family for example, a family of five living in what looks to be a studio apartment, maybe a one bedroom and contrast that with Joseph Pulitzer’s office at the top of a tall, domed building finished off with a gold coat. Also, the music used in the background was nice to help create suspense, I specifically liked how in spots during the second half you could hear pieces of “Santa Fe” float around. Along with that, this is a musical, songs are a large part of the plot and how the story is told and I believe that the songs were quite effectful. Songs where all of the boys sing together, like “The World Will Know” and “Seize the Day”, were really strong and gave you this feeling of power, determination, and readiness for what lies
When Romeo goes to the Capulet’s tomb to see Juliet and was amazed how beautiful her wife that she do not look like she was dead and when Juliet soon wake up Romeo already drink the potion, she saw him dead and look for Romeo’s gun and shoot herself. What this shows is that this is the part where I develop my decision to the movie because the actors delivered the line so perfect and touched my soul that made me cry. I’m impressed with Luhrmann’s courage to make a movie of one of the most Famous plays of all time. Obviously, with a great director like Baz Luhrmann retelling a play of Romeo and Juliet is a perfect
Crimson Peak, released in 2015 and directed by Guillermo del Toro, opens with a monologue by the film’s protagonist, Edith Cushing. This monologue continues for four minutes, encompassing a flashback which includes events of Edith’s childhood. During this flashback, Edith’s mother comes to her in the form of a ghost. The syuzhet presents ghosts as terrifying and unwanted antagonists that exist to terrorize the hapless Edith. However, the film’s primary twist is that the ghosts actually intend to protect Edith from harm, rather than inflict harm upon her. Her monologue in this opening scene introduces the role of ghosts in the story and establishes many of the film’s most prevalent trends. One such trend is the way the syuzhet makes horrifying
Therefore the costuming in this play was outstanding. There was a lot of effort put into making the costumes for this play. I enjoyed the three musketeer
the first of its kind to be made with a small budget, unknown cast, and limited resources. This proves that this film is unique by showing how differently the director and actors
‘My fingers closed on the fingers of a little, ice-cold hand! The intense horror of nightmare came over me: I tried to draw back my arm, but the hand clung to it’ (Page 20)
The acting plays a crucial role in the way the audience perceives the characters. Skeeter Phelan (Emma Stone), Hilly Holbrook (Bryce Dallas Howard), and Celia Foote (Jessica Chastain) are wide-smiled, younger-aged, petite, white women, whereas Aibileen Clark (Viola Davis), and Octavia Spencer
Kenneth Branagh included a range of quotes from the play, and the characters showed their personalities and emotion which added to the drama. It had me hooked from beginning to end and having already read Much Ado About Nothing it was interesting to see how much difference it was when to see the words shown through actors. My favorite parts were when the characters were having a conversation using Shakespearean language but with the knowledge of English and the characters facial expressions you could still understand and be memorized by it. I am happy with the film and the only negative thing I have to say about it is the tendency for the characters to go over the top with their expressions especially when Claudio was looking trying to give
I enjoyed this film because it has a real story behind it and is something I
