Edna Case Study Essay

The ending of Kate Chopin’s The Awakening is both controversial and thought provoking. Many see Edna Pontellier’s suicide as the final stage of her “awakening”, and the only way that she will ever be able to truly be free. Edna’s suicide, however, is nothing more than her final attempt to escape from her life. Edna Pontellier’s life has become too much for her to handle, and by committing suicide she is simply escaping the oppression she feels from her marriage, the suppression she feels from her children, and the failure of her relationship with Robert.

The Awakening by Kate Chopin ends with the death of the main character, Edna Pontellier. Stripping off her clothes, she swims out to sea until her arms can no longer support her, and she drowns. It was not necessarily a suicide, neither was it necessarily the best option for escaping her problems.

Though there are several themes in this novel, the central theme that connects them all is identity and finding who you are and where you belong in life and society. At the beginning of the novel, we see Edna is portrayed as typical mother and wife; "Looking at them reminded her of her rings, which she had given to her husband before leaving for the beach. She silently reached out to him, and he, understanding, took the rings from his vest pocket and dropped them into her open palm. She slipped them upon her fingers" (1). Once Edna decides to live life the way she wants that is thrown out the window. The reason for this is due to Edna’s second side. She is said to have two sides "Even as a child, she had lived her own small life all within herself. At a very early period she had apprehended instinctively the dual life—that outward existence which conforms, the inward life which questions" (7). The "sides" refer to as her inner and outer self. Edna’s outer self is the person who everyone around tells/wants her to be; Her inner self is the Edna that longs to be free, she wants to do what she feels like without people judging her. This is why the theme is identity from start to finish Edna is struggling between who others want her to be vs. what she wants to be.

Edna Pontellier was a very respectable woman from the 1800's that was unsatisfied with her situation in life. Mrs. Pontellier was a mother of two sons and had a husband whom she adored at the beginning of their marriage, but overtime they have became distant and her sexual desires were no longer being fulfilled. She soon broke the role society had casted upon her and became rebellious by leaving her womanly duties behind. Kate Chopin reveals Edna Pontellier's character through the her actions, through dialogue, and by telling the reader the thoughts and feelings that are circulation through Mrs. Pontellier.

In Kate Chopin’s The Awakening, two people who have the ultimate influence on Edna are Mademoiselle Reisz, and Robert Lebrun.

The novel recounts the story of a woman called Edna Pontellier and her strife to find the meaning of life, true happiness, and independence. This leads her to take many decisions women of her time found repulsive and forbidden. The setting of the novel plays a crucial role in the development of the story, since it takes place at the end of the 19th century, a critical time for women, since they were seen as inferior to men and had little to no rights. The case study the presents itself, that of Joan, seems pretty unremarkable. Reading her history is akin to exploring that of any patient close to her age. She has diseases that are common to women of her age, and she is facing the same family dilemmas that most women of her age group face. The fact that the case seems so unremarkable may be the problem though. On the face of it Joan seems to be a relatively happy, healthy individual. But, a healthcare professional has to dig deeper into the case than that. The issues that face Joan are common to seniors, so these are the discussion issues that are the most relevant to her. Elizabeth is one of three children; she is the middle child. Elizabeth has one younger brother and an older half-sister. Elizabeth’s mother is Puerto Rican and came to the United States at the age of four. Her father is from the Dominican Republic and came to the United States at the age of twenty-one. Edna Pontellier as a character is an Interesting topic amongst scholars who have read The Awakening by Kate Chopin. The topic of her suicide is the focal point of such discussion. Weather it was an act of heroism, or the downfall of an already pitiful woman. While it may be easy to characterize suicide as a “coward's” death it's not good to be so hasty. Looking at Edna as a character one can see a woman who is clearly more progressive than the time she was in. Edna had always been on a different wavelength than her peers. One that means she was different, unpredictable, and outcast. However this isn't the case, Edna should be praised for her courage and heroism towards the

Edna St. Vincent Millay is mostly known for her earlier works, such as "Renascence", Few Figs Thistles, and Second April. Millay wrote about things such as mystical views on the universe, god, death, celebration of feminism, and free love. It's almost as if she was a writer from today and with that, I believe that she would be comfortable with today's free America.

The older population is often mistreated in the society and this trend is becoming even more prevalent. It is the responsibility of every individual of the society to protect these people and take care of them as they have reached the time of their lives where they cannot perform most of their tasks. First and foremost, the families of the old population, that is their children and grandchildren, should take care of them. They should make sure that they are not being harmed by any means. However, nowadays life has become too busy for the young population and therefore they argue that they do not have the time to take care of their parents or grandparents once they have attained an old age. This is one of the main reasons why most of the adult population starts living in old homes since they do not have a family who would take care of them (Old Age Homes, 2013). When such is the case, then the sole responsibility of these people comes on the shoulder of the old age homes, the community service organizations or any other long-term care facilities. However, the controversy arises when the people at these old age homes or community service organizations have to make a life altering decision for the old people (Kwek et. al, 1998).

“Liz”, the helpee, is a 30-year-old female. “Liz” is a full-time live-in caregiver and advocate to 2 elderly relatives, ages 89 and 83, both with multiple health issues. “Liz” is responsible for managing household finances, needs of 2 family dogs, household chores, all doctor’s appointments and medication management for both of her grandparents. “Liz” has been in this position of responsibility for 3 years.
