Education makes up our society. It’s a major reason why our society has such qualified and intelligent workers that are employed in various career paths. College for a lot of people is the place where people really figure out who they really are. Not just what they are going to do as a career path but who they are going to be as a human being. There are all sorts of hurdles and obstacles that people go through in college that make them the way they are. College has different types of values that help many hard workers in all sorts of occupations reach their utmost potential. Many question whether the price of higher education it is worth it or not. He says that “college has many purposes, from research and discovery to maturing students” (X11). What the author is trying to explain to his audience here is that even though college is expensive, it makes you a better rounded person and others could become better people because of it. He also explains how sometimes a person’s college that ideally fits them the best can also be the more expensive option. In the book he tells a story about a girl who had visited Ohio Northern University (35). Kelsey Griffith fell in love with the place because it had the marketing classes she needed and it only held 3,600 students, which was an ideal size for her (35). The conundrum that came along with this college is that the cost of tuition and fees were 30,000 dollars at the time (35). Kelsey was very determined to go to this college even though she knew that her parents could not afford it. Financial-Aid Counselors had her focus on all the benefits that private college could offer her (36). By the time she had graduated, Kelsey was 120,000 dollars in loan debt, without employment, and was forced to move back home with her parents. (36). A story like this should advise future students to not break the bank when they are choosing perspective colleges. This is definitely a major trade off young people are facing every day.
