After someone completes high school, their first step is figuring out what kind of career they want to pursue. Most careers require a college degree just to apply. At this point, they should decide what their major is going to be and see what college is best for them to attend. Every college requires “general education” classes that the students must pass to graduate. Taking these extra mandatory classes is just time lost that college students will never get back.  General ed classes are also a waste of money, as many students acquire major debt from trying to pay for these required classes. If students were able to only take courses that help them in completing their major, more students would actually finish the classes and get their degree instead of dropping out. Universities should not necessitate students to take these general education courses that have nothing to do with the their major.

When a person, such as Ryan, is considering applying to a college or university there can be many psychological factors that can play a part in determining your actions. The things you become exposed to, assumptions about people, and your motivations are all attributing to our life decisions.

Are general-education classes beneficial to students, or would they be better off sticking to their field of study? While general-education classes do take more time, I believe that they are necessary for producing the best scholar possible. Colleges that require their students to take general-education courses produce more well-rounded individuals that will be able to apply outside knowledge to their field of study while being able to relate more easily with individuals outside their field.

1. My current situation with work isn't that great. I told my boss that I have school and that is my main focus this fall. They really want me to work so they can get things done. The problem is they are going to give me the crappy jobs that nobody wants. Why would I go back when I would be given the crappy jobs to do? I currently have enough money to cover my schooling costs. It bothers me that they can't hire someone else. It's almost like they expect me to come back and work.

Critical thinking is the process that you use in order to apply a memorized concept or term to a situation. The ability to think critically is necessary for college students preparing for the work force because they will have to be able to develop new ideas for their area because many fields are moving so quickly, they constantly need to be making progress. This skill is developed by changing the way you learn information and how you practice and use it.

Starting college. You’re excited, new beginnings, new people and new classes –general education classes, that is. Most everybody starts out with ‘gen eds.’ or, also known as the ‘basic classes’. The general education requirements from the KCTCS states that students will “develop their own values, pursue goals, and contribute to the political, moral, social, and cultural enrichment of society.” But are they worth it? Tons of information that few decades ago would be only available in libraries, now literally fits in anyone’s back pocket. But they do have a lot of important and the biggest problem with gen education in not the courses themselves but the fact that the importance of these courses isn’t self-evident to students (Hanstedt).
