Homeless families with children represent the fastest growing segment of the homeless population; in fact, they constitute about 40 percent of all people who are homeless (Stronge 7). In addition, the most recent estimate of homeless children and youngsters by the United States Department of Education is 744,000 (Stronge 7). These statistics are indeed quite frightening, and they go to show that children constitute a large part of the homeless dilemma. The part of that dilemma that seems most taxing is that of educating such homeless children. How can these kids become active members of society if they are unable to receive a proper public education, the same education that is provided for so many other kids under the Constitution? …show more content…
While at my on-site orientation for tutoring at the Center for the Homeless in downtown South Bend, the volunteer coordinator made a point of bringing up the center’s Montessori preschool program. It is very unique, and she was very proud of it. She then went on to explain why the program is so important. She said that the younger kids have the greatest chance of changing their ways. The earlier they start turning their lives around, the better the chance that they will break old harmful habits and start making new helpful ones.
In Judy Daniels’ article entitled "Humanistic Interventions for Homeless Students: Identifying and Reducing Barriers to Their Personal Development," the author is successful in describing real-life examples of the effects of homelessness on school-aged children. She starts out with the story of Angie, a high school student who lives in a tent with her mother and two siblings. After being caught for fighting with her classmates, Angie is sent to the counselor’s office where she confesses her frustration with her current living situation.
Living in a place I shouldn’t is ruining my life! How would you like to take cold showers every day in a public bathroom? We cannot even go to the bathroom by ourselves because it’s not safe. One thing that really bothers me is that I do not have any time for myself and
In Eleanor J. Baders Homeless Campus article, it talks about numerous of students that were homeless while going to school. Some of the students continued schooling because they wanted their education without letting anyone know they were homeless, they should have spoken up for help or withdraw because it was hard for them to continue on. Some even camped out in the woods or even couch surf, because there was no other place for them to go. It was even hard for them to stay clean, and when the school was empty, and no one was around some of the students went to the gym to take showers. Some slept in their cars; because that was the only place, they could sleep in. It was a hard life for these students, especially the ones who had a child to take care of. It was hard for the parent because they could not feed and clean the child nor did they have anyone to take a cause of the child.
Being homeless presents many challenges for youth that they normally live day to day, unable to develop plans for forming a productive life structure. Since many homeless youth don’t have money so they start begging or selling drugs or start prostituting to earn money to cover their basic needs. With the number of homeless students on the rise, schools encounter new educational challenges that include:
In the United States, homeless people have become a problem phase, as many people view the homeless as a menace to our society. The New Orleans Mission, Volunteers of America, and Ozanam Inn are non-profit organizations that provide services to people who are homeless. The group of people that are included in the category of homeless people includes veterans, people who are mentally ill, families who have lost their job, single parents, or runaway children. 47,725 or about 8% of the homeless population are veterans and 50% of the homeless people are over 50 years old in the U.S. Homelessness is an unsatisfactory issue that we as humans do not see the importance of the help they need. In our community, we take things for granted and not worry about the importance of helping others. The unfortunate people living in the streets have passed through difficult times and appreciate small or big things. Homeless is a person without a home, and therefore typically living on the streets. Some homeless people have become abusive of drugs, alcohol, and other different type of drugs. Homelessness is a major problem in our society. Homelessness contaminates our city, makes our city look dirty, and it is priority to fix this problem.
Homelessness can sometimes seem like a surreal thing which does not actually happen to real people, or at least not to the people you know. However, statistically speaking, thirty thousand people are homeless on any given night. For every one of these homeless people, three point five people are what is known as ‘hidden homeless’. Commonly referred to as couch surfers, these are people who have no permanent residence, but stay with relatives or friends temporarily. Young people aged sixteen to twenty four are twenty percent of the homeless population. With these high numbers of homelessness right while we are in high school and while pursuing higher education, of course a large majority are also attempting to cope with homelessness.
The word homeless typically does not bring to mind images of children and you but in reality, more than 100,000 and more children an experiencing homelessness have been identified by U.S. public schools every year since the 2015-16 school year. Seeing some student homeless on the street it give other people bad feelings. Imagine student feeling lost and not even knowing what to do or where to sleep. There’s many problems that cause homelessness and most of that is cause by housing is unaffordable to the poor people and the other causes are include physical illness, mental illness
A few years ago in Nashville a homeless man named Steve Young sold a copy of homeless paper The Contributor to a man named Mike Dotson (Dotson). After this brief encounter Steve didn’t think he would ever see Mike again. When Mike showed up a few days later with a breakfast sandwich Steve was proven wrong (Dotson). Mike gave him the sandwich and with a joking smile said he had “licked the cheese off it for him” (Dotson). Although his joke may have been rather stupid it got Steve to laugh nonetheless. Mike had done more than just offer Steve food for his body he had also offered him friendship for his soul. Steve and Mike went on to be good friends and founded a homeless organization called Home Street Home Ministries in Nashville (Home Street Home Ministries). Home Street Home Ministries serves the physical and psychological needs of the Nashville homeless community (Home Street Home Ministries). They set an
Everyday we come across homeless people on the streets of our cities blocking roadways, doorways, and alleys everywhere we go. Whether they be dumpster diving for food or something of value or on street corners begging for change with open hands, they are everywhere no matter where we turn to look. With the low unemployment rate of 6.6 percent in Canada along with jobs being created and offered left and right, people do not understand why there are so many homeless people in our cities. How can we deal with all these homeless people? What can we do to help them? What does the future hold for the homeless? For the percent of homeless people to start disappearing we must help house them and assist then in finding work, finding them homes and finding them the path to a better life. This will keep them busy and away from the streets of our cities to help keep a cleaner and happier community. But is this enough?
“Homeless youth have a variety of issues affecting their ability to succeed in school. It is difficult for children who are hungry, scared, and living in either temporary 2 housing or inadequate housing to concentrate on the elements of school. Research indicates homeless youth are absent from school more often than students that have a fixed residency” (Weber & Lugg, 2008).
Image being homeless, and not having a stable dwelling to call home. For a majority of people throughout the United States reality is true for these Americans. For example, waking up every day, not knowing where your next meal will come from; having to asking strangers for a few dollars, to get something to eat and drink. For instance, Crisis, the homeless charity, Perhaps this week has been active for 50 years says 114,780 people were homeless in England during two-thousand fifth-teen and two-thousand six-teen. Perhaps as many as 34,500 people sleep rough in England in any year around 4,000 a night. Crisis says that for every rough sleeper, there are 100 people in hotels, and 1,100 households in bed and breakfast and over- crowded accommodations. (" Financial Times, 22 April 2017). So what is the right reaction when someone in need asks for money on the street? In an interview last month, Pope Francis suggested the answer was to give without hesitation; but many charities beg to differ. Thames Reach, which supports homeless people and rough sleepers in London through the Street Rescue service and hotels. Thames Reach is adamant that people should not give cash to beggars. Providing cities with overwhelming evidence" that shows eighty percent of people begging do so to support a drug habit. Being homelessness has an emotional appeal to consider, simply because as society we don't know what paths of problems arise through -out our lives. ( Thames Reach).
Many children who are homeless struggle staying in school because they frequently move. As a result, it is hard for them to stay on grade level with their studies and build healthy relationships with their peers and teachers. Many families are not placed in shelters close to their children’s’ schools.
