Policy and Advocacy Effective and efficient health care continues to remain one of the major deficits throughout the nation. Achieving and maintaining each individual patient’s highest level of mental and physical health is the priority of all nurses. However, this is sometimes unsuccessful with the current nurse-patient ratio of today’s society. Insufficient nursing staff can sometimes result in shortfalls with patient goals and overall outcomes of their health status. In this paper, I will identify and discuss the current problem that exist with nurse-patient ratios and the various factors that are affiliated with this ratio. I will also review Bill H.R. 2083, a possible policy option to improve that has the potential for improving the present healthcare current situation. Policy Identification/Background Information Increased patient to nurse ratios has the potential to produce negative outcomes for the patients, families, health care staff, and the health facility. The overabundance of patients and decreased nursing staff leads to increased morbidity and mortality rates for the patients and healthcare facilities. Nurses with increased workloads become physically and mentally exhausted, which leads to inadequate nursing care and hazardous errors. The incidence of falls increase when efficient time is not permitted for the individual care that is needed.
