How Technology Affects the Human Body
In the late 1880’s Heinrich Hertz discovered radio frequency waves, this is where the matter of discussion begins (NASA). A 2010 Kaiser conducted study concluded that children in elementary school on average use technology up to 7.5 hours per day, 75% of t which have televisions in their bedrooms and are found to have decreased attention spans. The average office job worker spends 7 hours per day on a computer (Holmes, 2013).The 21st century is in the midst of a technological revolution, technology is becoming an essential to day to day life. As technology positively influences aspects such as medical development, and environmental solutions, it also potentially causes harm to health. Millennials spend much time on their technological devices, however don't consider the effects. Cellular devices and technologies are potentially dangerous, as addiction affects human development.Technologies radiation effects are being researched and concluding that physical development is being negatively impacted by technology.
The common addiction to technology causes vision problems and eventually causes what eye professionals call “Computer Vision Syndrome”(Soltan, 2016). Effects of this diagnosis include eye strain, which is when pupil size decreases and eye muscles adjust… and the eyes are forced to intersect (Chan, 2011), tension headaches which are caused by muscle spasms in the temples, and dry
In “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury, the parents are at fault for their deaths because they let their children use technology too much. One of the big problems in The Veldt is the damage that technology caused for the kids. According to, thejoint.com, “more and more children are experiencing eye strain from staring at a screen for too long. This can lead to blurry vision, eye fatigue, focus issues, and even double vision,” in the story Wendy and Peter were exposed to so much technology that not just their minds were affected but also probably their health. Also, Roogirl.com suggested that, “people are not only dependent on technology they are also addicted to it. Studies have shown that when cell phones are taken away subjects heard or felt fathom vibrations, continuously reached for phones that weren’t there and became fidgety and restless.” When Peter and Wendy were told to take a break from the nursery they
Impact of Technology On Society Sesan Akerewusi University of Windsor Abstract Technology surrounds us and has dramatically affected the way we live in this present society. From entertainment devices such as the television, communication devices such as the iPhone, life-saving devices such as defibrillators and educational devices such as Microsoft and Apple computers, technology appears to have numerous benefits in certain fields of human life. Today, technology and human lifestyle are like a set that cannot be separated. According to research conducted by technology enthusiast Lulu Chang, the average human spends an alarming 4.7 hours a day on his/her phone, and 8.4 hours a day on media devices in general (Chang, 2015). We live in an
According to a 2010 Kaiser Foundation study, which involved elementary children, concluded that on average 75 percent of parents allowed their children to have bedroom TV’s, North American households keep their TV’s on for 50 percent of the day, and use 7.5 hours of technology entertainment per day (Rowan). Technology is becoming a problem throughout the United States, especially in elementary aged kids. Parents are introducing technology as early as infants so that they understand certain information at an early age. When parents introduce technology at such an early age they are giving their children the advantage to be addicted to the wonders of it. Young children are at a high risk of brain damage with the advancement of technology. The more adults introduce technology to younger children the higher the chances of problems it causes. Technology has a negative effect on younger children and should have limitations on the age in which it is being introduced.
Technology is taking over the lives of people all around the world. Have you ever recognized how isolated people have become with the new smart phones or how hard it is to get some sleep at night? Have you ever noticed how more and more people have become depression and hearing lose has increased over the years as new headphones are invented? The way technology has been include in the lives of people all over the world like finding cures and making surgery less pain full. The advancements in technology has both helped and harmed people. Technology is taking over human lives, affecting their health. Technology has badly impacted human health by causing depression, negatively impacting relationships, creating poor sleeping habits, growing rates in obesity, and more prone to infections .
Many studies and observations have been made on how technology can negatively affect a child’s physical health, mental health, emotional well-being, values, educational development and relationships. The results of these studies found technology exposure can be linked to childhood obesity, behavioral problems, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, coordination disorder, unintelligible speech, developmental delays, learning difficulties, anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, poor physical activity and poor school performance.
People have found it hard to function without their technology. Parents have been known to go hours without feeding their children, or feeding themselves sometimes causing the child to die from being malnourished, or the parent to fall ill due to the lack of nutrients (Maney 1999). In 2013, Mark Knapp and wife, Elizabeth Pester were charged after their three year old child was rushed to the emergency room, weighing only thirteen pounds; the couple was then arrested from their Tulsa home after they left their child in the hospital to return to their video game (Kemp 2013). Research shows that too much time spent with a tablet or cell phone and the radiation that it emits has led to minimal cases of cancer as well (Nordenberg 2000). Teenagers on average check their phones thirty-seven times an hour (Ritchel 2010). Teens report feeling anxious or sick to their stomach when their phone battery dies, saying they “need to have it back” (msv13 n.d). America has fallen in love with gadgets that will consume the ability to function in the “real world” (Della Cava 2011). Not being able to perform daily activities without your phone or tablet should be considered an addiction, it needs to be cured. Actions to prevent a technology dependent society include company management having “no-tech meetings” to insure that decisions are not being made without communication in the group, as well as schools having a “no cell phone policy”
The second reason why modern technology contributes to negative health problems is that children independently use technology, which impact on their social development and relationship. As the age of the kids, the majority of them still cannot control or understand how to limit themselves from their wants. Some children spend so much time playing computer and video games all alone that they are losing their ability to socialize with others, families and friends. Children can averagely spend six hours each day watching television or
Is the use of modern day technology harmful to one’s health? Mental and physical health is worsening because of modern day technology. Studies show that constant exposure to screens changes the neural circuitry of developing brains, leading to shorter attention spans, stunted social skills and a heightened ability to multitask (Gibson). Physical effects of technology can be blemishes caused by your phone. Staring at your phone all day can wreck your spine, WiFi exposure can lower men’s sperm count, and too much screen time could strain
Technology has increased its role within society gradually over time. Through social media, apps, and devices, we perceive technology to make lives more accessible and easier to the modern crowd. Integration into schools and such almost seems as though we take it for granted, however few seem to realize the negative impacts Technology provides for society. Although helpful, Technology may provide negative effects behaviorally and health-wise, and therefore should be separated from our daily lives.
It’s no secret about technology, yet we’re spending more time than ever glued to our screens. But here’s the sad reality; all that technology is taking a toll on our health. What are the effects of technology that cause people to be unhealthy. 9 Ways technology affects mental health “Fear of missing out “ How people are (FOMO) (Fear of missing out) on social media less attention to their life more on media, people feel like they will not fit in with the people they are around with so they wont feel left out. “Is everyone having fun with me”, people feeling depressed and lonely because of the cause of to much media. Media has been taking up peoples time that start causing people to feel lonely and uncared for
Technology affects our health in numerous ways. They vary in a range of severity as they can be as curable as body pains or as not easily curable like cancer.
News in Review - University of Calgary Study Demonstrates the Dangers of Technology on Physical Health and Psychological Condition
Technology has proven to cause health issues in children. For example, in the article, “Obesity in children and technology,” by Elle Paula, it is stated that, “According to a review in obesity in 2012, a lot of screen time may increase obesity risk.” This
Today, almost everyone uses computers on a daily basis. We stare at the screens for countless hours and suddenly, our eyes experience a sore or fatigue, which tells us that it is time to stop. Although this is normal, we are often unsure if the eyestrain has a negative effect towards our vision 's health or is only a short-term prolonged effect of computer usage that will disappear after we rest. As this topic is debatable, the highlight of this research paper is to discover whether computers cause permanent eye damage or not. Despite many contradicting ideas, the majority of sources propose the idea that computers only caused eyestrains instead of causing permanent eye damage. This will be the report 's thesis and with the resources
Furthermore, another effect is visual problems. Visual problems from computer patient will meet the doctor with symptom blurred vision, double vision (diplopia), etc. Actually, these problems are not caused by nearsightedness or myopia, farsightedness or hyperopia, astigmatism and refractive problem, but the effect of these problems are from prolonged computer usage. The study of computer vision syndrome in computer office workers blurred vision can be found up to 23.8% and this study also found that double vision up to 13.7%. Plus, statistic of the American Optometric Association was found blurring vision in 30.48%. Visual problems are caused by fatigue of the eye muscles (ciliary muscle) that control the focus of the image or extraocular muscle that compounds the images from both eyes into a single image (binocular single vision) due to use near vision or reading vision for a long time. Definition of double vision or diplopia by The Merriam Webster dictionary is a disorder of vision in which two images of a single object are seen (as from the unequal action of the eye muscles). And the meaning of blurred vision is a loss of visual acuity and disability to see small details. Which is sometimes related to the inability of the eyes to focus on a computer screen for a significant amount of time. In addition, visibility may be blurred by constantly changing focus on the keyboard and computer screen. How to avoid the visual problem? There are many ways to avoid these symptoms,
