Violent crimes are unfortunately a routine occurrence among our present society. Violent crimes are those in which an offender uses and/or threatens to use a weapon in order to accomplish their crimes. A violent crime occurs in the United States every 27 seconds (Karmen 78). Violent crimes can end fatally if the offender feels threatened. Many behaviors can be practiced in order to successfully reduce the likelihood of these violent crimes from occurring.
1. The most fatal violent crime is the crime of murder. Murder can occur in many forms: first degree murder, second degree murder, serial murder, spree murder, and mass murder to name a few. The major difference between first and second degree murder includes an offender who commits first degree murder has ultimately planned the murder, while second degree murder is ultimately spontaneous. Additionally, serial murder includes killings of 3 or more people within separate emotional events. On the other hand, spree murder and mass murder are singular emotional events however spree murder is the killing of multiple people in a number of locations while mass murder is the killing of multiple people in one singular location. Factors that may increase the chance of a person becoming a victim includes the victim being male (Davis, Lurigio, and Herman, 135). Living in the United States in general can greatly increase a person’s chance of becoming a murder victim due to the United States having murder rates that are double
During the 1990’s, the United States saw the greatest decline of violent crime rates since World War II. The dramatic decline gradually began in 1994. By the late 1990’s, the crime rate had dropped with a record 10.4% (“1990’s” ). Violent crimes generally include acts such as murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. Although there are numerous theories as to why this happened, no one has actually pinpointed the reason for the substantial decline.
It was a pleasure to meet you at my July 2015 presentation regarding the impact of violent crime on the Rutgers New Brunswick community. Along with this letter, I have attached a comprehensive copy of my proposal which aims to improve the safety of New Brunswick by implementing a strategic policing approach to reduce violent crime after dark.
With high amounts gun violence exposure affecting one’s social networks, it is not surprising non-stranger homicides occur more often than stranger homicides. Non-stranger homicides consists of individuals that are known by the perpetrator, such as family members, neighbors, acquaintances, or any other individuals in their social group. Non-stranger homicides comprise four-fifths of homicides, while stranger homicides comprise of one-fifth of homicides (Stroebe 14). The presence of guns in a home increases an individual’s chance of being murdered nearly three times more than if guns are not present in the home. Factoring in the presence of illegal drugs and physical violence in homes with guns further increases the risk of murder (Kellermann et al 1993???).
I still remember the day: 2nd October 2015. My professor, always punctual, arrived five minutes late to the class. Any other day, if a student was late to the class, she had a few strict words, so we were all curious about the reason she would provide. “I wanted to be a little late for class today because I didn’t want anybody to miss what I have to say”, she started. From the grave tone of her voice, I knew that I had better provide my full attention. “Yesterday nine people lost their lives when a gunman opened fire at a community college in Oregon, eight of them were students and one teacher” she continued in the same tone. She scanned the whole class and then told “I am always complaining about you people being late to the class, and it
To begin, limiting gun violence would be made easier if they conducted more gun violence research in America. According to Newsweek, some people say that gun control laws violate our rights. After the Sandy Hook shooting, former President Barack Obama called on the CDC to further study gun violence. However, the order has had no effect on anything and the NIH actually took steps backward in trying to close its gun-violence research programs that it currently has. (Frankel, 2017) By taking these steps backwards and choosing to ignore the problem this country has with gun violence, is only going to lead to further incidents because we cannot limit the problem. Although the government is not the only source of money for the gun violence research,
Based on data most murders and aggravated assaults occur with gang violence and domestic violence. Murder is the taking by another person’s life. There are several degrees and circumstances that define the level of murder. For the purposes of these statistics murder the rate is based on criminal homicide.
To reduce the violence rate the district city council passed the firearms registration Amendment Act of 2008.Under this law gun owners should go through a process of requiring fingerprints, photographs and details about their job history. Applicants have to take a 20 question test on the district gun law and regulation. Trainers are allowed by the police to the buyers to perform the vision exam. Afterwards the guns are submitted back to police. The registration expires after 3 months and must be renewed. If not, the police can seize the gun and the owner could be jailed for up to 1
Violent crime is a problem in the nations of Great Britain and Australia despite very stringent gun-control laws. In
I find this report from the American Psychological Association to be very informative and useful in relation to gun violence and crimes. The article outlines some key preventives measures, research findings and surveys that can help reduce the rate at which these crimes are being committed. According to this report, the rate of gun homicides in the United States has declined in recent years. However, U.S. rates remain higher than those of almost every other nation in the world and are at least seven times higher than those of Australia, Canada, France,
Murders often involve incident characteristics. Most of the murders are committed by someone the victim is familiar with, and most offenders use a firearm as their choice of weapon. “An examination of victim and offender race indicates that murder is primarily interracial” (Renninson & Dodge,2018, p.55). In the recent years violence amongst college students has become a topic of interest. “Research is clear in general, off campus areas prove to be more dangerous than those off campus” (Renninson & Dodge,2018,
Over the course of the past fifty years there have been countless homicides across the entirety of the United States, all with their own purpose and methods of commission. While it is impossible to completely prevent homicides from happening in our current society by looking at the data as a whole and analyzing the various patterns and trends it follows we might be better able to explain and understand it. With understanding comes new ways of prevention and deterrence that should allow us to significantly decrease the rate of homicides in our nation for future generations to come. To demonstrate this, we will be looking at two datasets one of the National homicide rates of 1950-2010 and another dataset of homicide and Non-Negligent Manslaughter
The following typology of mass murderers was presented by Turvey (2008:510). The types were grouped according to the variables of motivation, crime scene types, and victim selection by Fox and Levin (2005), who used the five categories of power, revenge, loyalty, terror, and profit.
The effects of crime on victim can have a mixed feeling about making a victim impact statement. They may want to tell the judge or parole hearing officer how the crime affected their life and yet they may be anxious because you don't know how to prepare an impact statement or you don't want to bring back bad memories by describing how the crime has hurt you. The victim impact statements may include descriptions of:
In the year 2015, 604 murders were committed in Canada, with 174 committed in Ontario; respectively 704 attempted murders were recorded, with 247 being committed in Ontario (Stats Canada, 2016.) It is obviously a very important issue in Canadian society and criminology. Murder can be categorized using two different degrees. First degree murder involves a form of premeditation or deliberate planning before committing the crime. Second degree murder is killing another with malice, performing a harmful act without just cause or excuse, but without premeditation or deliberation. An example of first degree murder is as follows – a business man learns his partner wishes to steal clients and start a separate firm, said business man goes out and purchases a gun with the intent to kill his partner. The business man has planned to deliberately harm his partner by buying a weapon, and follows through with his intent and kills his partner. Respectively an example of second degree
Everybody knows the effects of violence. The effects of violent behavior are generally bad. The causes are something very little known. Most people say that violent video games and television shows are the source of violence in our society but they are not the only source. There are many theories that try to explain what those causes are. Theories include, biological, macrosocial, and psychosocial.
