Electronic Cigarettes: the Lesser of Two Evils? In the past few decades extensive research has gone into studying the effects of cigarettes on air quality. Many carcinogens and particulate matter (PM) exist in the second-hand smoke. The results from these studies have led to anti-smoking campaigns across the country; consequently changing the cultural acceptance of smoking into a cultural taboo. Not only did smoking affect the health of the consumer but conventional cigarettes also spewed several toxic chemicals into the environment that affected other people’s health. The environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) has been associated with cardiovascular problems, asthma, respiratory infections, and lung cancer. Consequently, this has led to the ban of smoking in many public places like public buildings, bars, and restaurants (Schober et al.). Unfortunately, the nicotine in cigarettes makes this product very addictive and for several years many people wondered if a product could be invented that simulated smoking but without all the chemicals. This idea was brought to fruition, in 2003, by a man named Hon Lik who was a Chinese pharmacist. Lik called his invention an electronic cigarette, otherwise known as an e-cig (Bell & Keane). E-cigs seemed like the smart alternative to cigarettes. Soon after, Lik’s invention was launched by Ruyan Technology, a Chinese electronics company, and in 2007, acquired an international patent. Marketers quickly capitalized on this idea of a
Electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigs or vape pens are so often negatively looked upon as sources of addiction, rather than the health cigarette substitute they really are. E-cigarettes allow the delivery of nicotine to the blood without the nasty side effects caused by tars and carcinogens in traditional cigarettes. The electronic cigarette was patented by Herbert A. Gilbert in 1963, who lived in a society where smoking was generally accepted or even the norm but he saw the dangers of smoking tobacco and was one of the first to try to innovate alternate intake methods. 40 years later Han Lik, a chinese businessman, began to further expand on Herbert A. Gilberts idea of delivery of nicotine without the plethora of harmful chemicals in a lit cigarette. An electronic cigarette is a battery powered device often designed to look like a regular cigarette, inside the e-cig is an atomizer which heats up a liquid containing nicotine. When heated up the liquid becomes a vapor that can be inhaled, similar to cigarette smoke.
In 2003 the electronic cigarette is first developed in Beijing, China by Hon Lik, a 52 year old pharmacist, inventor and smoker. In 2007 Electronic

The profitable business of electronic cigarettes has raised over $3 Billion dollars annually, vastly spread across over 466 brands which have joined the ordeal. Above all, known as a “gateway drug”, electronic cigarettes have claimed the once-ordinary lives of people, specifically to those who have turned from tobacco cigarettes. What is more, scientists have determined that not enough research has been executed to automatically assume the healthiness of e-cigarettes. Despite this, many have claimed that e-cigarettes, are, and will be the new “healthy” drug, so to speak. Provided that e-cigarettes do not release harmful smoke, they are still not safe for one’s health given that not enough research has been performed on them.
Reports say that China is the inventor of the first e-cigarette. These types of cigarettes are battery-powered that converts nicotine into vapor, making it allegedly safer than regular cigarettes.
The FDA is going to kill a industry of young and old entrepreneurs. They are trying to pass bills to ban Electronic cigarettes also known as "vapes". Vape culture has help hundreds of tobacco user to quit nicotine and prevent them from putting the hundreds of cancer causing chemicals found in tobacco.
“ The true face of smoking is disease, death and horror – not the glamour and sophistication the pushers in the tobacco industry try to portray ”. – David Byrne. Smoking has been an habit in teenagers and adults for a very long time and it is well known that it is harmful for them as well for the environment. Technology has advanced, and now there are electronic cigarettes, called E-cigarette, which are devices with battery that carry nicotine heated aersosol in a fashion that imitates common cigarettes, while carrying lower levels of toxins than a conventional lit cigarette. They can be used indoors, which allows smokers to get their fix wherever and whenever they want. A study from NBC News (Leshae) shows that electronic cigarettes are a technique for smokers to try quitting their addictions. Manufacturers consider that e-cigarattes are healthier than normal tobacco cigarattes, since smokers are inhaling vaporized nicotine rather of carcinogen-filled smoke. However, according to a Thomas Jefferson University Alumni article, some reseachers have found harmful ingredients in certain e-cigarettes, such as ethylene glycol poisoning, a primary ingredient in brake fluid and antifreeze. E-cigarettes mey seem like a healthier alternative to traditional cigarettes, nevertheless there is some research that proves the contrary and we still don’t know its long term effect.
In 2003, Han Lik, a Chinese pharmacist, developed the electronic cigarette after the death of his father due to lung cancer. Electronic cigarettes are battery-operated devices that are filled with flavored liquid that may or may not contain nicotine that can be inhaled by the user. The device gives smokers that experience of a traditional cigarette but without all the tar, tobacco, and carcinogens. The vaporization in electronic cigarettes is started by the battery heating up the liquid solution, then creating a vapor that can be inhaled. Some are in the form of a regular cigarette while others are in the shape of a pen (Prono). The FDA does not currently regulate e-cigarettes and there are no long-term studies on the effects of the chemicals used in the vapor solutions.
Electronic cigarettes are getting popular on a daily basis and are beneficial not only for your smokers but also for individuals who are affected by passive smoking.
Electronic cigarettes, more commonly know as e-cigarettes have taken the 21st century by storm. They are handheld devices that have evolved dramatically since they were first introduced to the U.S. in 2006. They have a variety of models ranging from the traditional cigarettes, to different sizes, shapes, and features. The battery-powered device is not regulated by the FDA and does not use tobacco. Instead they deliver nicotine to the user through the conversion of various chemicals such as nicotine, propylene, glycol, glycerin, and flavoring chemicals in to vapor to be inhaled. The battery on the device heats up to produce the vapor that the user inhales.
