Thesis: The Titanic sank because the route was not changed in time of the hit, the cold water mirage, and man’s error.
Baldwin, Hanson W. "R.M.S. Titanic." Elements of Literature. Virginia ed. Vol. Fourth Course. N.p.: Holt, Rinehart, and Winston, 2005. 328-46. Print. The Short Story : “R.M.S. Titanic” In this short story about the Titanic, several warnings of icebergs were sent out to the ship, but the captain disregarded them. The passengers of the ship continued to go about their usual activities when all of a sudden the ship shook. It was too late to change the route of the ship due to the warnings of the icebergs. The ship had sideswiped one and its compartments began to fill with water. The race between life

The Titanic was a passenger ship, not a battleship, so it was not built to take on huge icebergs. It states in the article that nothing was wrong in the building of the Titanic, but anything is possible. Man’s error could have been a big factor with the sinking. The ship was built among time pressures, not because of cost, which put a huge strain on the shipyard. If the builders were given more time, then mayne the ship would have been stronger and could have withstanded more. Higher quality rivets and thicker hulls might have kept the Titanic afloat for much longer.
Titanic. Dir. James Cameron. Twentieth Century Fox, 1997. DVD. The Movie : The Titanic Apart from the tragic love story of Jack and Rose, the ship itself was the main backbone of the movie. Plenty of the scenes were dramatized in the movie, but not all of it was false. It shows that the stern rises before the ship completely sinks. James Cameron shows the major keys of the incident. It shows what it would have been like to be on the Titanic the night it sank. The passengers panic, the unnoticed iceberg, and the sinking of the ship was portrayed effortlessly in the movie. Toward the end of the movie, it is said that the ship sinking was pure human error, not by fault, but by fate. The iceberg was not actually seen right away. The cold water mirage was not brought up in the movie at all. The men who were on lookout just did not see the iceberg. It was dark out and they truly might not have
The British luxury passenger ship, The Titanic, set sail on April 10, 1912, en route to New York City from Southampton (Lord ch 1). During her maiden voyage, midnight of April 15, 1912, she began to sink (ch 1). The Titanic had a collision with an iceberg that was around 100 feet tall (“Titanic: 40 Fascinating Facts” 3). Regardless to how greatly manufactured the Titanic was, and with beliefs that she was unsinkable, the miscalculation of human error proves that every possible outcome cannot be prevented, disasters can still occur regardless of careful planning.
Most people thought that the Titanic was unsinkable, but they couldn’t have been any further from the truth. The Titanic’s maiden voyage in the early 1900s was cut short due to a collision with an iceberg. The Titanic was a tragic event that helped change sailing for years to come because of the massive casualties and the sinking of an unsinkable ship.
The Titanic is one of the most famous ships known around the world as the once "unsinkable ship". April 15, 1912 the Titanic sank into the Atlantic Ocean on it's one and only voyage. The 825 ton ship can be found 400 miles off the coast of Newfoundland 12,600 feet below the Atlantic.
The deluxe steamship, Titanic set sail from Southampton, United Kingdom on April 10, 1912. The Titanic was a luxurious ship that carried some of the wealthiest people of the world as well as emigrants searching for a new way of life, it was said to be a “floating palace.” The technology that was present on this ship was remarkable for the time period. It had high-tech capabilities and was one of the best accomplishments. As the palace was on its voyage to the Port of New York, it ran into a large iceberg. The impact was so large that the ship’s hull plates were forced inwards, allowing water to rush in. The ship slowly sank on April 15, 1912. The Titanic’s crash became the most iconic shipwrecks in history and grasped headline after headline. This paper has article reviews from James P. Delgado, David
The catastrophic sinking of the Titanic, over one hundred years ago, continues to drive scientists to search for answers. Was this simply an unfortunate maritime disaster, or did human error play a role in Titanic’s demise? Bruce Ismay, president of White Star Lines, had a dream. A dream, to build a magnificent luxury liner that would transport people across the Atlantic Ocean in style. With the help of the owner, John Pierpont, and ship designer Thomas Andrew Jr., the ship of dreams was soon a reality. However, Titanic’s maiden voyage on April 10, 1912, from Southampton, England to New York, made history in an inconceivable way. Sadly, over one thousand innocent people went to a watery grave in the middle of the cold, dark, Atlantic Ocean.
The sinking of the Titanic is one of the most famous maritime tragedies in the modern world. The Titanic sunk on April 15, 1912, while making her maiden voyage across the Atlantic. Even though the Titanic was deemed unsinkable by her builder, White Star line, she sank after striking an iceberg. This picture (NewYorkTimes.com) emphasizes the tragedy of the 1500 people that lost their life. While the loss of life was incredible, it could of have been prevented. There were only 20 lifeboats aboard the Titanic and this amount was not ample for the nearly 2,200 passengers aboard the ship. Another contributing factor to the loss of life was the lack of training on the operation of the life boats. (History1900s.about.com). Life boats were
Some of the methods used to make the ship are no longer used, like the method they used for the rivet holes, which were cold punched, that now have to be drilled in. Scientists in US have evidence on the reason Titanic sank in merely two hours was because the rivets that held her together were made from a flawed metal. The US National Institute of Standards and Technology said rivets recovered from the wreck were so impure they would have snapped after the liner hit an iceberg in 1912. Although they used the best metal available at that time, it would’ve been beneficial if there was a better metal used in the rivets. If the rivets wouldn’t have snapped so fast the Titanic might’ve stayed afloat for another hour or two. It would’ve bought enough time for one of the 2 nearby ships to get there much sooner and rescue more survivors instead of the 700 that were
gone because the ship could only travel 14.5 knots and was far away, long after the Titanic was
Most people believe that the sinking of the Titanic was unavoidable and that there was no way for to avoid the iceberg, but this simply isn’t the case. The reasons as to why the Titanic struck the iceberg and sunk as fast as it did is due to the captain ignoring safety protocols, use of cheaper materials to save money and a design flaw with the ship’s watertight compartments. The first error that lead to the Titanic sinking was due to Captain John Smith ignoring safety protocols. The Olympic, the Titanic’s sister ship, had already sailed the same route that the Titanic was taking and Captain Smith wanted to beat the time that the Olympic took to complete the voyage (Boyle, 2012). As a result, he had the ship travelling at full speed even though
“We could see groups of the almost fifteen hundred people still aboard, clinging in clusters or bunches, like swarming bees; only to fall in masses, pairs or singly, as the great after part of the ship, two-hundred and fifty feet of it rose into the sky, till it reached a sixty-five or seventy degree angle.” – John Thayer (www.eyewitnesshistory.com). The RMS Titanic, more commonly known as “The Titanic”, set sail across the Atlantic Ocean April 10, 1912 from Southampton, England to New York City, USA. The “unsinkable” Titanic was a luxury boat, with mostly first class seats. It was the most high class boat of its time with nothing but positive reviews from wealthy businesses. The sinking of the Titanic is proof that
Is it possible that The Titanic could have been unsinkable and could nearly 1500 lives been saved? Titanic was one of the most magnificent ships that were ever built in the world, standing 104 ft tall and 882 ft 9in long. Titanic sank on April 15th 1912. The tragedy of The Titanic could have been prevented if all safety regulations had been followed properly, if all compartments had been locked down in the bulkhead, and if all lifeboats had been filled and carried properly. First, there were six iceberg warnings, Captain Edward John Smith, did not think of them being as serious as they were, and eventually resided to his room at 9:30pm.
“The iceberg's jagged fingers had clawed through the steel hull. Water was gushing into the ship's lower levels. The Titanic will sink" (Lauren Tarshis 5). “It hit an iceberg. The weight from the sea water made one side of the Titanic go up and the other side down.
Captain Smith ordered the lifeboats to be uncovered at 12:05 am and sending calls at 12:10 am. Passengers were tired and didn’t get into the first lifeboat until 12:45 am. Soon it became obvious that the ship was sinking and many fought for their lives to get on a boat. The water first filled the boiler rooms and no passenger rooms. The boat then lifted up and broke and lifted up into two pieces, the top half pointing to the sky. Passengers got many injuries from running around in panic in fear of their lives. Some people even threw furniture overboard and would jump in after it, hoping it would float. After saying their goodbyes, men watched as the wives and kids were boarded onto the lifeboats. Some stepped of the lifeboats to let others sit and mad no effort to save themselves, they later went to an honored grave. . However it became obvious that many could not fit and find safety on a boat. The remaining passengers and crew were given life jackets, but life expectancy would be slim when they were exposed to icy cold waters 4 degrees below zero. As they jumped in they quickly died in the water from a heart attack or slowly developed symptoms of hypothermia. After the ship was slowly sinking the search for survivors began, using lifeboats they passed through the frozen people. Survivors were finally rescued around 4:00 am on April 15 by the ship Carpathia. The ship steamed through the night at high speed and considerable risk. The ship rescued 705 people, leaving 1,522 passengers had died along with the
The Titanic was never thought to sink as it was said to be unsinkable. The crew members, builders, and citizens that were on the ship were all under the influence that they were invincible to the world. When the Titanic was on its way to the destination the
Iceberg right ahead! " These words foreshadow one of the sea's most tragic disasters of all time. The Titanic will always be remembered for what happened after those fearful words were said.
