The elevator ending “Hello, Martin,” she said, and laughed, and pushed the STOP button. While on the elevator Martin was scared so scared he was shaking it wasn’t a pleasant feeling for him and it was even worse knowing that she knows his name now. He was wondering how she knew his name and why his dad got off and talked to her. Are they dating? Are they going to play a prank on me? Martin had all of these thoughts rambling in his head he wondered what she was always staring at him for. The fat old lady asked Martin what he was doing, Martin stood silent wondering what was going to happen to him. The old fat lady pushed the 17th floor and then pushed the stop button so it wasn’t light up anymore they make it to the 16th floor and the elevator
Of all the battles young Martin faces from William Sleator’s “The Elevator”, a reader can grasp one of the greatest and most important themes to fit this story. When Martin and his dad move into an apartment, Martin is apprehensive about it because of the fact that the place is old and practically falling apart. For one, Martin is afraid of elevators, and he has to use an old one everyday. To top it off, he has to ride the old thing with a mysterious, creepy, fat lady. Once Martin’s situation gets to the point of being unbearable, he confronts his dad telling him about the creepy lady on the elevator. Martin’s dad is the exact opposite of how a father should be. Martin’s dad insults him whenever he looks to him for help. Also, Martin doesn’t
This all started when Martin started using the elevator. He always saw her staring at him, so he became uncomfortable and saw her as if she was threatening. The lady wore dirty clothes and had an appearance as if she was poor. “She wore a threadbare green coat that ballooned around her; her ankles bulged above her dirty sneakers, Martin was sure he felt it sink under her weight” (Sleator 28). To show this scene, the author uses specific detail. This helps lead to the theme by showing how he noticed her from her appearance and the way she acted that she wasn’t innocent. Martin is afraid because he isn’t sure if this lady is a danger to him. Another incident where Sleator used specific detail is “Coming home from school the day after they moved in, Martin tried the stairs. But they were almost as bad. Windowless, shadowy, with several dark landings where the light bulbs had burned out” (Sleator 27). This showed specific detail, while still showing the theme, always be aware of your
The elevator went to a complete stop, and Martin cried out for help, but somehow no one heard him. Then the fat lady pulled out a wrench, and before Martin could do anything everything went dark. After the fat lady knocked out Martin she dragged his unconscious body into the back of the apartment building where no one would see her. Once she got to the back of the building she picked up Martin and tossed him in the trunk of her car. She put the keys in her car and she was off.
“You’re going to love it. They are so much fun!” Emme told her. Emme had been to the Escape Room once before, but now they were saving the Titanic from sinking.
1. Throughout the story suspense is aroused and maintained excellently. This is achieved by the character the author creates. Mr. Martin is characterized as a neat and cautious man, who never took a smoke or a drink in his life. Our suspense is aroused when the author states that it has been “a week to the day since Mr. Martin had decided to rub out Mrs. Ulgine Barrows”. This arouses our suspense because we are told Mr. Martin is planning to murder this woman. The suspense is maintained with Mr. Martin’s thoughts. We as an audience are given his thoughts through the use of the 3rd person omniscient point of view. His thoughts are mostly on the issue on his dislike of Mrs. Barrows. Because of this, he
When Claudette and her friends went onto the bus there weren’t any white on board so didn't have to pay then get off and go through the back door of the bus. They were free to go down the aisle. Claudette and her three friends sat in the same aisle. But as they went down every block the bus started to fill up with more and more white and black passengers. Then she realized that a white lady was standing up on the aisle and as usual the bus driver told them to get up and move to the back.
“Bless you” she tells him as she runs in the direction of the turnstile. “Jennifer, Jennifer” she calls on the stairs of the platform. “Jennifer, Jennifer” she calls on both the platforms, on the train that’s about to leave the station, and in both the men’s and women restrooms. Roselyn makes her way to the turnstile. “Thank you, thank you, thank you” she says as she stops to say to the booth attendant, she zips down the stairs again calling out again “Jennifer”. Roselyn dashes to Luna Park, calling out the name of her daughter. She scopes around the theme park, looking far and wide, Roselyn runs around the park franticly.
Max should be coming he thought. Marlee then heard the front door open again and through the cracks in the creaky floor boards smelt a terrible smelly man. He smelled like heavy alcohol and sweat. He could taste the alcohol it was so strong. The room then flooded with a sour taste and smell, thats the last thing he remembered before he was back upstairs in the bedroom. Marlee couldn't see anything, he felt the wall and the door knob and then ended up with his hand in the boiling oil. He screamed so loud that both the man and the women started running up the stairs. He was like a prisoner in their house. The door then swung open and a pig belly man and a short stubby women were standing in the door way. The man started to search the room for Marlee but he was hiding in the closet. The women started to yell so loud that Marlee’s ears rung. They were in the room for a good twenty minutes trying to find him but failed; both of them walked out slamming the heavy door making Marlee
What was going through his head, obviously, was not what she expected. He started to walk out the door without her help and before she knew it, he was gone out of sight. She sat down thinking he was going to come back, but as time went on, she started to feel anxious and scared and called the police after going out looking for him. The police brought him back, not knowing that in the back of the police car, he had passed away.
He tried to turn to face the pigged faced lady, but he couldn’t. He screamed and hollered for his dad, nothing, again, again, still nothing. He realized that he was on his own, the lady stepped closer and closer while she laughed. Martin was forced to wobble into the corner of the tiny elevator. He was at a loss of what he could do to protect himself, then a light bulb went off in his head.
Lorry, Miss Manette, and Moneieur Defarge went to go visit Jacques. They went down a starcase and it was nasty, and creepy looking. There were so many rooms and they all had the door opened. Mr. Lorry asked if "he" was alone and they were refering to Jacques. Jacques isnt a specific person, its just a name thats used for the unknown. When they went to visit Jacques, Miss Manette felt scard because she didnt know what to expect. Jacques was asking her is she was the daughter of somebody, but she said no. She had told Mr. Jarvis Lorry and Monesieur Defarge that she was frightened of her father. "I am afraid of it." "I meant of him, my
“You’re an interesting boy, you know? I just need to have you for myself.”, she said as she pulled out a sharp dagger from her grotesque green coat. Martin panicked, so he quickly raised his crutch up and hit her head, knocking her out. He felt relieved as he slides down the wall, onto the ground. But then, Martin realized she pressed the stop button so they won’t be disturbed as she tries to kill him! “Oh, NONONONONONONONONO!”, Martin cried out. How will he get out of here? What if he is stuck here forever?
As the road got more narrow and more trees and shrubs start appearing the heat dimmed down. A gravelly road appeared and the car slowed down to a halt. Towering in front of Connie was a big, black, menacing gate and behind it was a worn down mansion. This mansion looked like it has not been inhabited in years and could use some cleaning. After what seemed like years, Connie dazed and unfocused was yanked out by Arnold Friend. Arnold had changed slightly, now he no longer smiled but had a serious, firm face as if the mask he had worn was slowly coming off. Arnold pulled Connie out of the cart by her arm but it was a careful pull as if he didn’t want to hurt her. Connie struggled and fought Arnold. She didn’t want to go into that mansion for she had a dark feeling about it. Arnold held on tight and said carefully, softly, “C'mon baby. Haven’t you learned not to struggle against me. I don’t want to hurt you.” Giving up, Connie came stumbling out, Ellie then drove away leaving a trail of dust behind. The car, the last means of running away was out of reach, hopelessly Connie followed Arnold advancing towards the
On September 11, 2001 my mom had just found out she was pregnant with me. She and my dad, told me their story. My dad was on his way to work, with his friend in his car, and they heard a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. They did not really react, because they figured that it was a minor plane, or maybe a helicopter, or a privately owned plane. My dad and his friend went to work that day like normal, and when they got home, they had been introduced to the fact that the towers had fell and it had been terrorists. My mom was fearful that the country was no longer safe, and feared for what kind of person it would shape me to be.
As he neared the donut shop he noticed just the slightest bit of movement on the far corner of the seemingly dead store, then he saw them, Kevin, Rose and Amanda and he knew exactly how all of them would get out of this junkyard. He immediately called to them to come over. They were hesitant to but they did slowly make their way to him. As they introduced themselves he told them about how he wanted to leave. Kevin was a very tall masculine
