On December 31, 1890 a transition in history occured. New York City would start a new era in the history of the United States starting with the opening of Ellis Island as an immigration depo. This attracted many immigrants to the United Stated because of more job opportunities and as means to start a new life. As more immigrants came to America, it began to be known as the "land of opportunities". Immigrants coming in filled work spaces in industries with the hopes of someday becoming successful. These immigrants helped prove to other future immigrants that if you moved to America then you could start a better life for yourself and your families. In the 1630s, Michael Paauw purchases the island and renames it Oyster Island because of the shellfish on the beach. Then during the 1700s, it is known as Gibbet Island for its gallows tree used to hang men charged with piracy. During the Revolutionary War Samuel Ellis purchases the island, and builds a restaurant on it for the local fisherman. After Samuel Ellis dies the State of New York buys the island so it can be used to build military fortifications and store ammunition. America is traditionally a country of immigrants. Very few people today have relatives who were Native Americans, many of them because of religious persecution, and others because of they were just looking to start a new life on the exciting untouched frontier. For instance, in Florida, the first arrivals were European, beginning with the Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon who explored the land in 1513, following French and Spanish settlement during the 16th century. From the past, America was seen as a country of opportunities. People from all over the world have moved here looking for better opportunities. There are a lot of reasons why immigrants should live in this country, but I would like to mention three of them.

Ellis Island is a small island located in the Upper New York Bay. Angel Island is the largest island in the San Francisco Bay in the state of California. Ellis Island served as a national immigration station from 1892-1924. Angel Island was an immigration station from 1910-1940. Both Islands helped America grow by opening their doors to the world. Immigrants who came to America now had a chance to achieve their own dreams and to start new lives. The country was new, the government was rising up and it gave immigrants an opportunity to succeed. When- This immigration station was not functioning until January 1, 1892. In the year of 1907 Ellis Island reached its peak of most immigrants with over 1.25 million immigrants coming into the U.S. through Ellis Island. This gateway lasted from 1880 to 1924.

The Ellis Island known today was founded by the New York State government in 1855 and it was the first immigrant processing station established in the United States. This maverick immigrant processing station was originally based on an island off the southwest tip of Manhattan, Castle Garden. The NY State Government placed this Immigrant processing station off shore for two main reasons. The first of those reasons being, for the protection of the immigrants who were often robbed or tricked out of their already meager funds by city swindlers. Also, to further prevent the spread of any infectious diseases that potential immigrants may have been carrying. Prior to the establishment of the Castle Garden processing station, Immigrants were allowed to simply walk freely into Manhattan harbor after departing from their ships. In April of 1890, due to legal issues, the castle garden project was ended and the US government purchased a swampy and small island to the to the southeast of Manhattan, where they would construct a new immigrant processing center and

Throughout those 62 years more than 12 million immigrants entered through Ellis Island. Immigrants came from places like Central, Eastern, and Southern Europe In Europe there were… amount of people etc. Many immigrants from different countries went through Ellis Island to find a new life to live in the U.S. At Ellis Island there were a bunch of workers that all performed tasks to help the immigrants get into the country safely.

This reference all depended on how people were treated throughout their journey. It could be referred to as a “police station” because there was a discrimination between rich, middle and poor class; immigrants were put through an inspection process in which they were checked without their knowledge of what was going on and if anything was wrong, then they would be branded with chalk and put through further inspection. After researching and visiting almost 20 colleges, Carnegie Mellon became one of my top choices for its various interdisciplinary opportunities. Since very few schools allow the flexibility that I have been looking for in order to pursue my interests, the Bachelor of Computer Science and Arts Intercollege Degree Program immediately caught my attention as soon as I heard about it. The field of virtual reality is still relatively new and growing, so with an exact interdisciplinary study committed towards computer science and art, especially ranking 2nd in the top undergraduate schools for game design and animation in the US, I know I will be able to get the education I want in order to excel for my future goals.
