“It is not metres, but a metre-making argument that makes a poem,—a thought so passionate and alive that like the spirit of a plant or an animal it has an architecture of its own, and adorns nature with a new thing” was what Emerson said which ignited the search of ingenuity within Whitman and Dickinson. The pursuit for an original and innovated form of poetry fueled Emerson and Whitman to develop their own styles. Whitman’s works are rooted in the use of nature to create the imagery throughout his poems, such as in “Song of Myself”, “The sniff of green leaves and dry leaves, and of the shore and dark-color’d sea-rocks, and of hay in the barn,” (24 Whitman). The use of nature as imagery was a shared technique of both authors for example, “These are the days when skies resume / The old – old sophistries of June - / A blue and gold mistake,” was a few lines taken from one of Dickinson’s poems. Additionally, because of the era and background challenges they encountered they both authors submitted some of their writing to political focused works. Whitman was published by Democrat, while Dickinson’s work was picked up by the Republican, while Whitman’s was published by the opposing group, the Democrats. Although just speculation, both poets were presumed to be gay. This, however, is where the two authors similarities end because they are more opposite than they are
When people think of Emily Dickinson, they think of a white dressed, ghostly woman hidden in the corridors of home, writing poem after poem. They do not think of the actual person Emily was. Emily Dickinson grew up in a rich, social, scholarly environment. She could have chosen many paths that would have led her to a completely different life, but because of circumstances, the social, high energy girl with a sense of humor became isolated by her own choice. Though Emily Dickinson’s depression is romanticized, sickness, social life, and death led her to seclusion and deep poems.

Sleep deprivation, vexation, feeling exasperated and a bit depressed; unfortunately, I feel every one of those today. Plans for Wednesday have changed for several reasons, each one respectively, due to either mum, Alexis, and myself; mine being a large monetary setback at USC this morning. In feelings and changes, I will work off the hours as I can this week, and try to have it finished by April. I would hate for a situation to arise, or yet another situation to arise rather, to come up, and still be jerking-off with this. With the blue-shifted deadline for those hours becoming bluer still, may be best to bite, swallow, and shit the bitter bullet and be done with it. Oh dear, proper British lady has crashed.
Publication remained a considerable conflict throughout her writing. A publisher for her writing was never easily arranged. She befriended Samuel Bowles, the editor of the Republican and for four years sent him poems and letters for publication. Because Bowles did not comprehend Dickinson’s poems only two were published, and even those were published anonymously. Both poems were heavily edited and given titles that she had not given or was not aware of. Only five other poems were published in her lifetime, each altered by editors.

Michael Salvucci Mrs. Comeau English 10 Honors Death, Pain, and the Pursuit of Peace Although Emily Dickinson’s poetry is profoundly insightful, her poems have a very confinedpan of subjects and themes. Most likely due to her early life and social reclusion, Dickinson’s poetry is limited to three major subjects: death, pain, and on a somewhat lighter note, nature. Dickinson’s poetry is greatly influenced by her early life as she led an extremely secluded and pessimisticlife. In her early adult years the poet spent one year studying at female seminary, from 1847 to 1848. Dickinson’s blunt pessimistic attitude is shown in a letter, written to a friend, as she says “I am not happy…Christ is calling everyone here, all my companions have
The View of an Unlimited and Limited Mind Found in Emily Dickinson’s Poetry (Emily Dickinson’s Views on an Unlimited and Limited Mind through Her Poetry) In Emily Dickinson’s poetry, her views of the human mind are expressed. In some poems, readers can interpret her poetry concluding that she believes that the human mind is unlimited; but in others the mind or even life is limited. When we read her poems like “The Brain is Wider than the Sky,” we notice the view of boundless thought that is unlimited.
Dickinson and Whitman both went against conventional poetry guidelines. One main aspect that differentiates them from other poets is the lack of rhyme. Both poets often refrained from any sort of rhyme scheme within their work.
Emily Dickinson describes a judgmental society in her poem “Much Madness is Divinest Sense”. Although Dickinson’s society was probably more judgmental on women wanting to be independent and not wanting to relay on man who back then was seen as the dominate being this poem still depicts an accurate society we live in today. Modern day society is so quick to judge and label what is acceptable or not even though they do not understand everything that is going on. Our extremely judgmental society will judge you on absolutely anything like political views, the food you eat, the clothes you wear, or how you do your hair. However, This is a huge problem not just with society’s standards on beauty but also on human psychology. A poet who understood
