Enbridge: Northern Gateway Pipeline Prabh Sidhu The production of oil is one of Canada’s greatest assets as it brings in lots of profit but British Columbia is one the most beautiful places in the world and is a prime tourism area. This leads to the question is oil transportation right for British Columbia? Enbridge plans to build two pipelines that will carry oil from “central Alberta to coastal BC” (Alternatives Journal, 2012). Enbridge Incorporated is a company that is a main transporter of natural gas, crude oil and other liquids in Canada, as well as a major operator of pipelines in North America. Some of the precautions that Enbridge has taken are that 70% of the pipeline will utilize previously disturbed land, it will dig deeper under water areas for more protection and ten pump stations will be powered by electric pumps to reduce noise and greenhouse gas emissions (Enbridge Inc., 2013). Even though all these precautions have been taken, the problem with a project like this is that there are always unforeseen situations even if all the necessary provisions have been looked at. The expected time of construction until fully operational is approximately 3 years if the project does go through (Hinte, 2005). Figure 1: Route of pipeline Source: Enbridge Inc., 2013 Enbridge’s project is financially going to have the price tag of about 6.5 billion dollars. That price is over 3 billion dollars more than price proposed back in 2004 when the project was announced (Hinte, 2005). Some of the other financial information that come with pipeline is that it will give BC about 1.2 billion in tax revenues over the next 30 years (Enbridge Inc., 2013). Also, a 10% share of the project ownership will been given to the First Nations and Métis for the pipeline going through their land (Hinte, 2005). Exactly 64 territories of First Nations land would be crossed with construction (Alternatives Journal, 2012). On the employment side of this project, Enbridge is expected to employ roughly 1000 to 3000
