Engineers define a successful task by measure the efficiency of the final product when the process is done. The same theory apply to me when I step into English 150 class for Fall semester, 2014. Coming from Mechanical Engineering background, I tend to think like an engineering because this is what I need to prepare for my future job. I like to measure the efficiency of learning English by look at the effort that I put on this subject and make it worth measure what I have improve for this semester. There are several important improvement that I can made through semester which are benefiting skills as a student, spotting my weakness, and finding way decrease my weakness. In this class, I found that I am bad in oral and transition. Speaking on behalf international student, I admit that oral is the main problem for us to communicate to the other people. This is because English is not our native language. However, according to Todey (2014), “There is no one right way to speak English,” is the most inspired words that I heard from my instructor, has give me a brand new spirit to life as a stronger student. Of course, compared to other students especially American, I felt uncomfortable to speak and voice out my opinion during discussion because I worry that they will not understand me. That’s why I chose to silence when my instructor ask my class any question, even though I know the answer. My second weakness is making transition during writing. I don’t really know how to connect the idea between paragraphs because when we talk about another paragraph, it is obviously we are talking about other and different idea and topic, depending the assignment. As the semester comes to a close, it is always interesting to look back and reflect on the events and opportunities my English class has given me throughout my first semester as a whole. At the beginning of this semester it was evident that I was feeling uncomfortable due to the adjustment that I was going through as a student moving to college. It was very difficult expressing myself through my writing since I was nervous about good impressions and my good grade. While this class was one of the most difficult courses that I have taken this far, it has become quite evident to me that I have grown a substantial amount as a writer and as a person; Especially, when it came to explaining my ideas, writing academic essays, and making arguments.
English Comp 1 was an eye opening experience. The course was emotionally and physically draining, but I strongly believe it prepared me for Comp 2. Learning and improving are a few of the rewards I received through hard work and dedication during the course. Throughout English comp 1, I discovered my biggest weakness. I improved some of my various difficulties, and I achieved a rewarding high point.
First off, I want to thank you for making this year and my first honors English experience fun for me! Though this year was challenging for me, it has also been extremely knowledgeable. From my freshman year to sophomore year, I can definitely notice the difference in my writing and reading. I can definitely see how much I have grown, and I am sure you could see these improvements too. Last year, I was in regular English and jumping from regular to honors was a huge step for me, which at first, I was not fully comfortable with. But as I got to know this year’s class and of course you, Mrs. Walker, I felt like I belonged here, in an honors English class. Throughout this year, I have learnt and improved at my skills of properly annotating texts, writing a proper claim, analyzing author’s style, and also analyzing rhetorical situations.
As the Fall 2017 term comes to end, I look back on what I have accomplished in this class. English 102 – Composition II was one of the most challenging and toughest class I have taken at UW-Stout, but feel as though it has helped me to improve my writing skills. Even before the semester started the feeling of anxiety had taken over, as writing has never been my strongest skill, but stayed positive and confident I would be successful. Much to my surprise, my instructor, Michael Critchfield quickly addressed that this class would not be easy and amazingly changed my views of writing throughout the entire semester.
As the semester was coming to a beginning I honestly thought I was ready for this course. I say this because senior year high school I took an advanced placement English class. I also, say I was ready to start this course because I have had practice with English and writing essays during my summer before beginning Fall year. I would get good grades on my essays both my AP English class and my Summer English class. So with that being said I thought I was going to do good in this course. As I began this course and saw that we were only going to be doing three essays and a portfolio for the whole year, I thought I was so ready for the semester. I thought this class was going to be one of my easiest class. As assignments were coming up I thought
When I began working in this class I was fearful that it would be a waste of my time. In high school, I took two AP English classes: administration at my school cancelled the first one in the middle of the year and I did not excell in the second. However, because of my educational background I am used to being challeneged and I did not see this course doing that for me. I never characterized myself as a great writer but I was already very familiar with the skills being reviewed so I did not believe that this course would add much value to my writing skills.
Throughout the English 111 class, my writing ability has grown to meet all of the course outcomes. In this class I was required to analyze fictional texts and make complex claims that matter in an academic contexts and revise them in order to make grammatical sense. For the 1.0 sequence I focused on Night, by Elie Wiesel and Sarah’s Key, written by Tatiana de Rosnay. Short papers 1.1 and 1.2, focused on each book respectively while major paper 1.3 allowed me to back my claim with both of the texts allowing for a larger exchange of ideas. Within the 2.0 sequence I focused mainly on the Poisonwood Bible, penned by Barbra Kingsolver. The short paper I have chosen to focus on for this sequence was 2.2; in which I had to write a letter to a character
Ever since I was a child, I never really enjoyed the subject of English. Aside from me considering the subject to be boring my vocabulary always seemed to be lacking compared to my peers, and the time I spent on reading passages and answering questions about those passages was much longer than my classmates’. However, my literacy skills started to slowly develop, and I ended up appreciating English in my junior and senior years of high school.
Throughout my academic carrer, I have had a history of struggling with English classes. I was excited to take English 101 because I believed it would most effectively teach me the basics of successful writing and communication. In high school, I developed mediocre writing skills and struggled with reading comprehension so I knew these topics would pose a problem in any English class I take. Despite the fact that I was in AP Language in high school, I learned very little and did not improve my writing and communication skills as much as I would have liked. In English 101 , I would like to change that and enhance my time management skills, grammar skills, and overall writing ability.
After reading through the class syllabus a few times, I get the impression that AP English will be a significant departure from my previous english classes, especially in workload and our power to determine our essay and discussion. Prior to this class, I have taken honors English 9, 10, and 11, with Derry, Armstrong, and Brewer, respectively. Though the specific focus of each class varied, all three, English 9 and 10 particularly, followed a similar pattern of reading, guided analysis and discussion, essay writing, and assessment. Almost all of this was very structured, such that I felt that our essays were pretty formulaic. Additionally, much of the class discussion seemed superficial in places, often discussion time was cut very short,
Hi! Let me introduce myself. I am Marley Bangert, I will be a senior next year at Madeira High School, and next year I will be taking CP English Twelve. Throughout this past year in American Literature I learned that a lot can change in a school year. So much about my writing skill and my reading comprehension has improved throughout these past 9 months.

In English Composition II I have been learning how to use all parts of higher-level thinking. I believe this should help me to view the discussions and debates gone over in class in a different perspective. I have learned about socioeconomic qualities, the notion of race, and identity crisis that will help me to cope with people feelings and mines have found better ways to cope avoiding the stereotypes that history has left certain groups of the population with a cold shoulder. I have learned the proper ways to oversee the issues and problems in the recent units we’ve read. I believe these topics I can always learn from to make me become a leading student. In high school, I wrote a lot of research papers and it helped me in college and later on in life. The English 12 class I took in high school there was a lot of writing in it. It improved my writing skills and got better at writing since I didn’t speak much English when I started high school. In reading, I read a lot of books in high school which improved my reading skills. My teacher helped me alot with reading and writing she was a big support for me. Now I can read and write good but sometime I get stuck but overall I improved myself a lot. This summer I took english 78b which helped me alot with my reading skills. I read two books in that class and at the end took a test on it. I learned a lot of new words and I will keep learning. I enjoy
I have only been attending Cleveland State University for two semesters, and as this course comes to an end I feel like I grown and learned many techniques more than ever. I came to Cleveland State University with only my high school knowledge on how to format an argumentative essay, and throughout this course I now know how to write and format many other papers. Taking English 100 has taught me how to break down and analyze an article, it taught me how to find confidence in my work, and it helped me grow to an even better writer.
