They all have one direction to speak English appropriately and as much as possible. These strategies are explained briefly below.
Firstly, I started talking to tourists and native speakers of English. My city Riyadh receives different nationalities. I used to have friends who speak English. I talked to them practicing my English. I used to stop them while talking so that I confirm the pronunciation of some words. We used to hang out talking in English when I used to take notes of any transcription of difficult words. Practicing English was the easiest way to learn speaking. I remember one of my neighbor was an oil engineer from Britain. She was helping me speak correct English. She was the main factor of my interest to learn it.
Secondly, I made the most use of social media to allow myself to chat with as many people from different countries. We talk and some of them correct my misspeaking. Social media was helpful to master speaking, especially when I listen to different accents of English. Through Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Snapchat, Instgram, etc., I chatted to my friends and I read their chat aloud to myself to compare the way they pronounce it to mine. Social media helped me follow events of the world and speak freely in addition to getting enough feedback about what I speak.
Thirdly, I took extra classes of English in evening language centers. These classes depended mostly on creating open discussions among learners. From these discussions, the teacher takes notes
English is a very important part of our lives as it is our everyday communication tool. It is imperative to know how to read, listen, speak, and comprehend; how to write so that we can express our thoughts about something; and how to communicate in a way that people will understand. When I began attending school my primary language was Spanish. My parents did not speak English in the home and when I went to school I knew and understood a little bit of English. I believe that having an older sibling helped me understand English. She began school a year before I did and picked up English from school and at home would speak to me in English. Not being good in English was one of many struggles that I faced at the beginning of my journey. I spent two years of my lifetime studying at an English language center. I had reading and writing class, listening and speaking, and grammar. I started from the basics. I didn’t know how to combine words to create a sentence or even the order of the alphabets. Step by step they taught me to many rules that could help me to learn. I began with making a sentence then a paragraph, and finally a whole essay. During that time I had the passion to read every word that I see. I started to listen to songs in English and tried to repeat that the singers said. I used to talk to my friends in English, even if they speak the same language that I speak. I was practicing all the time. Every time I go back home during my summer vacation, I bring some books that was written in English and read them everyday in order to keep my expertise in English
Putting lots of effort and hard work. I used to take lots of books from school, and I even put my own little library with all the books in English I wanted to read. I enjoy reading genres like Mystery, Suspense, Diary, Fiction and Nonfiction. Reading was my biggest challenge, I could speak it but could never read it. With only eight months in the country I was reading like nothing, although I never read anything out loud in class.
Similar to Tan’s mother, I realized my limitations to having a fluent conversation with people I communicate with and I made a huge effort to attend English reading class and to frequently visit the writing center to reduce my accent limitations, so that I can be able to fluently interact with people in the school and my work place, and this has greatly helped me.
I speak English just fine, but without the aid of speaking it at home, all those years apparently made it difficult for me to comprehend the language. I am the only person to be born in the United States out of my whole family, even my big brother was born in Brazil. In elementary school, I was signed up for the English Language Learners program and it was probably the most infuriating thing for me back then. I was raised around English-speaking neighborhoods and was efficient in school, so I spoke the language just as well as the next person at my age. It made me so angry that I would get
