McCrimmon defines the three levels, formal, moderate, and colloquial, by their sentence structure, diction, and tone (McCrimmon 193). ¹ Using McCrimmon’s definitions, authors can determine what type of writing is applicable to each of the three levels. For the formal writings, an adequate example of where readers can find it is in a professional journal, and an appropriate place to find an example of the moderate level is in a weekly news magazine. Also, the best place to look for an example of the colloquial level is in certain sections of the newspaper. The United States, is it a monolingual country? If asked most people would claim that English is the mother-tongue of the population of those living in the United States of America. Is this claim accurate? Most people in the United States without access to data and information would probably say that English is the norm, but according to the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau Report this claim may prove Americans incorrect. According to Hyon B. Shin and Robert A. Kominski, authors of the selection, “Language Use in the United States: 2007,” data is provided that may prove that the English language may not be the norm in all homes in the United States. Shin and Kominski, demographic statisticians for the Census Bureau provide disparaging data that may prove otherwise that the United States is not a monolingual country.

In line with the trend of globalization and the growing recognition of language as resource, English as an international language has increasingly attracted ESL learners across the world to study in the United States. While international ESL learners collectively contribute to the diversity of education on the macro level, they bring their distinctive identities into each classroom on the micro level. Situated in a multicultural learning environment, learners constantly represent and negotiate their identities through classroom interaction with other participants. Investigating participants’ identities is significant because it not only provides valuable insights of applying humanistic education principles to ESL teaching and designing (Elias & Marriam, 2005), but informs teachers of potential chances and barriers that particular individuals or groups confront (Gutowska, 2014). In this paper, I analyze a three-minute classroom discourse to demonstrate how participants’ identities can be constructed, negotiated, and reconstructed through interaction in an intermediate-level adult ESL classroom.
