English is an international language. When you travel to other countries, you can communicate them by using English. Many people are trying to learn English, so the number of students who study English literature or linguistics has been increasing. Learning English literature is a good choice to improve people’s English because literature and linguistics are related to each other.
Learning a foreign language is not an easy thing. And it’s not just about learning language; it’s about understanding the culture as well because language and culture are related very deeply to each other. With this, you can’t learn language without also embracing the culture. The “Linguistic Relativity Hypothesis” is an example of this. It is the idea that “the structure of language shapes the way speakers of that language view reality” (Eschholz, Rosa, and Clark 574). This demonstrates that language is able to change depending on the speakers. And reading literature is the best way to understand their view because literature reflects language which is used that time. Languages are always developing, even right now, and reading literature is one of the best ways to learn a language. Literature includes many historical events, political views, religious beliefs. And through this, the development of language occurs. We can see, for example, how language has changed by reading old books. Therefore, reading literature can be really helpful when you learn a language because you don’t just memorize it
English is a very important part of our lives as it is our everyday communication tool. It is imperative to know how to read, listen, speak, and comprehend; how to write so that we can express our thoughts about something; and how to communicate in a way that people will understand. Since English is the global language, it is essential that we have a good command of the language not only to set a good example but to be successful in life.
Indian English Literature is a literature which is a combination of Indian literature and Indian literature written in English. Indian writings in English are a product of the historical encounter between the two cultures – Indian and the western—for
Is it really necessary to have English as the official language? U.S has been trying to find the answer for this question for a long time. And they still didn’t come up with an answer. Presently, there are 23 states that actually wanted to have English as the official language. And it’s still not enough. I agree that there are some benefits for having an official language but we should also consider the disadvantages that are more than advantages.
English as we know it is indeed the dominant language, but does that mean everyone should learn it? Should English be the global language? Should you have to know English to communicate if you are someone that lives in a place where the native language is something different? The answer is no. However, first you must consider the statement “It is a fact that English is the dominant language in the world today. Everyone, in every country, in order to participate in the modern world, should learn English. After all, a language is just a random collection of words, so how hard can it be”. Personally, I believe it is tremendously difficult to learn a new language as an adult, but in order to make the world go round, we all should know more than one language; no one language should rule. Barbara Wallraff, David Crystal, and John Tagliabue share a few words that connect to the statement to show their personal mindset behind English being a global language. In this essay, I will extract statements from each of the authors that explain their views on a global language to support my overall perception.
Language is one of the most important tools people use in the United States of America, where language is the key that opens the door to all opportunities in this country –that can either unite or break our nation apart. The first time Congress proposed to designate English as the official language of the United States was in 1981, where Senator S.I Hayakawa, from California believed that English unified the American people. Hayakawa believed that bilingual education in the public school system was a threat to the nation itself, where language acted as a barrier that divide us a result of the friction between the public and minority language. Many states soon after, began to institute English-only law that restricted the use if other languages
The NASW and I have different positions on the issue of language in the United States. The NASW language and cultural diversity in the United States policy statement reads that “language is a source and extension of personal identity and culture…to limit or deny language as an extension of culture is to reject that aspect of human beings that helps to define them” (p.217). While, I don’t disagree that language is part of an individual’s identity, I find the statement harsh and exaggerated to meet the point the NASW is trying to convey on the topic. Language differences can hinder communication, it’s a barrier to effective communication. Non English speaking individual face barriers
When we read books, we develop our vocabulary. Also, the majority of novels reveal the way that characters communicate with each other and talk with the right vocabulary and the right sentences in every situation. I use to read English novels, so I develop my communication skill. Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the first English novel I read, reveals how to speak informal daily English speaking. That is why I like to read English novel. Moreover, it helps me in the formal and informal communication.
“The English language is nobody's special property. It is the property of the imagination: it is the property of the language itself.” This once said by famous poet, Derek Walcott. I have been in school for quite some time and exposed to various themes of education. Throughout my years as a student , English has taken the place of my favorite subject. Many people believe English shouldn’t be taught in school because it is the first language for most of us. However, I am truly captivated by its development over the course of so many years. There are just so many types of poetry , writing pieces and literature. It would be hard not to give it all a chance.
There have been many disagreements where things have gotten worse or even unsolved simply because individuals did not understand one another. A language is part of each culture’s individual personality. The way that words are grouped together, the meanings of each word, and the distinct passion that words have, all play a role in the way that cultures identify themselves. However, because of the hundreds of languages spoken there are many problems that having only one universal language, such as English, may resolve.
Montopoli quotes Congressman Steve King when writing, “A common language is the most unifying force known throughout history.” English, the fourth most spoken language in the world (Ethnologue: Languages of the World, 15th ed.), is a language spoken from Rwanda in Africa, to Singapore in Asia and many other countries. With 340 million native English speakers, and 510 million total (Ethnologue: Languages of the World, 15th ed.), English becoming the official language would not hinder the rights of non-native speakers and be beneficial.
“One out of four of the world’s population speaks English to some level of competence” (NADRAG, TIHENEA, and STAN, 2013). It is well known that English is a globally used language and holding balance internationally, but after all how can we ‘dig deeper’ into it? Although undisputedly English is today’s international lingua franca, the comprehension of globalization of the English language of its historical origin, further consequences (to other non-English speaking nations), and trend of benefit with disadvantage might come more important than the language itself as it is practically being used daily and globally.
A language that is spoken internationally is called “Global” or “World” language. A global language is a language in which people speak internationally on a daily basis, in international organizations and diplomatic relations. It is a “lingua franca”, a language that helps people from different backgrounds to communicate with each other. Not many languages that have been established in human history have reached to the point in which they are called a global language, amongst those few languages is English. Approximately 2 billion people around the world use English as a native language, a second language or a foreign language. English is used for many causes, such as; technical and scientific communication, education and employment.
Nowadays, English language has become one of the most important languages in the world in which we need to learn and to teach in order to communicate effectively with others from all over the world. Al-Jarf (2008, cited in Alhaysony, 2012) indicates that about one million students are learning English worldwide, which highlighted the importance of English teaching and learning for academic purposes. Graddol (2000) states that English Language "is the main language of books, newspapers, airports and air traffic control, international business and academic references, science, technology, diplomacy, sport, international competitions and advertising". Accordingly, we can say that it is important for students to learn English language effectively to achieve a good level which will help them to success in the relevant fields that depend on their good use of English language.
