English Is An International Language

English is a very important part of our lives as it is our everyday communication tool. It is imperative to know how to read, listen, speak, and comprehend; how to write so that we can express our thoughts about something; and how to communicate in a way that people will understand. Since English is the global language, it is essential that we have a good command of the language not only to set a good example but to be successful in life.

Is it really necessary to have English as the official language? U.S has been trying to find the answer for this question for a long time. And they still didn’t come up with an answer. Presently, there are 23 states that actually wanted to have English as the official language. And it’s still not enough. I agree that there are some benefits for having an official language but we should also consider the disadvantages that are more than advantages.

English as we know it is indeed the dominant language, but does that mean everyone should learn it? Should English be the global language? Should you have to know English to communicate if you are someone that lives in a place where the native language is something different? The answer is no. However, first you must consider the statement “It is a fact that English is the dominant language in the world today. Everyone, in every country, in order to participate in the modern world, should learn English. After all, a language is just a random collection of words, so how hard can it be”. Personally, I believe it is tremendously difficult to learn a new language as an adult, but in order to make the world go round, we all should know more than one language; no one language should rule. Language is one of the most important tools people use in the United States of America, where language is the key that opens the door to all opportunities in this country –that can either unite or break our nation apart. The NASW and I have different positions on the issue of language in the United States. The NASW language and cultural diversity in the United States policy statement reads that “language is a source and extension of personal identity and culture…to limit or deny language as an extension of culture is to reject that aspect of human beings that helps to define them” (p.217). While, I don’t disagree that language is part of an individual’s identity, I find the statement harsh and exaggerated to meet the point the NASW is trying to convey on the topic. Also, the majority of novels reveal the way that characters communicate with each other and talk with the right vocabulary and the right sentences in every situation. I use to read English novels, so I develop my communication skill. Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the first English novel I read, reveals how to speak informal daily English speaking. That is why I like to read English novel. Moreover, it helps me in the formal and informal communication.

With 340 million native English speakers, and 510 million total (Ethnologue: Languages of the World, 15th ed.), English becoming the official language would not hinder the rights of non-native speakers and be beneficial.

Nowadays, English language has become one of the most important languages in the world in which we need to learn and to teach in order to communicate effectively with others from all over the world. Al-Jarf (2008, cited in Alhaysony, 2012) indicates that about one million students are learning English worldwide, which highlighted the importance of English teaching and learning for academic purposes. Graddol (2000) states that English Language "is the main language of books, newspapers, airports and air traffic control, international business and academic references, science, technology, diplomacy, sport, international competitions and advertising". Accordingly, we can say that it is important for students to learn English language effectively to achieve a good level which will help them to success in the relevant fields that depend on their good use of English language.
