I can’t express enough about the life of an immigrant in the United States. There's many reasons of why not knowing English can be a major obstacle for most people that face, coming to the United States. The major obstacle of someone not knowing English is that they cannot communicate with others that talk to them in English, its difficult to have a job or even secure a job, and learning the language itself. “More than 35 million adults in the United States are native speakers of a language other than English.” (U. S. Census Bureau, 2001) and there’s about 23 percent that people know a little or nothing at all of English. In the journal I read it said “16 percent “not well,” and 7 percent “not at all.” (Day and Shin, 2005)

But when time passed she realized that not knowing English was a major obstacle, but since she had a family she couldn’t go to school and learn it. In a 1992 article of Los Angeles Time it says, “You want to learn English, but it is very difficult because you have to work hard to support the household." (Gewertz, 1992) In my research I have found that one of the obstacles is “problems faced by the students in pronunciation, learning grammar, knowledge of sentence pattern, habit of hearing news, rectification of homework, memorization without understanding, remedial teaching and different variables regarding sex, locality and type of management” (Raja and Selvi, 2011) that for most of the people working, household and family is the obstacle to attend school so then they can't attend school even though if they want to.
If any of those can cause a lack of progress, it becomes combination of failure. “For example, external challenges related to family, work, and social identity might combine to limit a learner’s classroom attendance and outside practice opportunities” (Wold, 2006)
Most of the learning barriers is “language learning disability (LLD), both in students who learn English and in students who learn other foreign languages” (Wold, 2006) LLD is when the person isn’t able to memorize the words, they would not know what the words mean, even though someone is telling what it is.
“Another important aspect that can also be considered as
society. Immigrants must do whatever they can to master English. They must prepare themselves to
The growth of English language has increased tremendously over the years and has become the most widely spoken languages in the United States. This observation aims to explore why when moving to the United States, many non-English speakers feel the social pressure to learn English and what difficulties they encounter. After my observation, I found that many feel the need to learn English in order to assimilate into a community, and though straddling two languages is difficult, it opens more opportunities, and language privilege.
It's a regular Tuesday morning, just like any other. A Hispanic mother is called to the school for a meeting for a consultation about her son’s performance. While in the meeting, the principal tells her that her child is in the 2nd grade, but is very behind. He adds the fact that her child does not understand the language the teacher speaks, and consequently, is not learning. The mother feels helpless since she cannot help him by reason of not understanding the language either. Hence, this is the difficult reality for numerous Hispanic families.
This situation is relative to real life instances of immigration, as those moving to America with the hopes of improving their own lives and the lives of their family members are, in some cases, unfamiliar with the English language. Therefore, they must somehow learn the ways of the new people surrounding them in order to be accepted in this environment and also be able to communicate with others so they can attempt to obtain jobs to support themselves and family. Understanding the same language clearly plays an important role in assimilating to new surroundings.
“Immigration” a controversial issue that argues two sides, the perspective of Americans and the reality of an immigrant. As a daughter of parents who migrated to the Unites States from El Salvador, I personally believe that immigrants are the correct side from what the Americans see or believe; however, just like anything else there will be two different sides; the good immigrants and the bad immigrants. For example, first, the US has immigrants with different types of crimes committed. Then, we have the issue of jobs with immigrants. Third, an additional issue is the cost of having immigrants that has many questions regarding the benefit. Last but not least, foreign language has been an accommodated at the United States and has been under
It is important for immigrants to learn to speak and write in English while keeping their native tongue. Without knowing how to speak the common language here, it is impossible to blend
“No Habla English”. “21 million people living in the United States cannot speak English. Citizens are not just speaking Spanish, but Chinese and Russian are rising fast.” (U.S. Bureau of Census, 2009) To force a citizen to speak a new language is discrimination. Non-English speaking citizens and immigrants that are without good English skills will fall academically, in the judicial system and when receiving proper medical care.
A common joke says “What do you call someone who speaks two languages?” in which the person being asked the question would usually respond with “bilingual.” It goes on to ask about those who speak three or four languages, but then there is a kicker. “What does one call someone who only speaks one language?” to which the punch line is “an American.” According to the 2006 General Social Survey, only 25 percent of American adults are fluent in a foreign language, while only 7 percent cite the source of this education to formal schooling (Devlin 1). Large amounts of evidence point to the benefits of being multilingual. Although the United States has a few laws that help immigrants assimilate through dual language programs, there is little to be
There is a saying foreigners use that goes “If you speak three languages, you’re trilingual. If you speak two languages, you’re bilingual. If you speak one language, then you’re probably American.” Living in America, the home language is English. So when foreigners come and are unable to pronounce or understand the traditional language, they come off as a useless individual to some members of American society. On the contrary, America is one of the few countries that is so heavily dominated by just one language. There are around 40 million Spanish-speaking citizens in America, however, compared to America’s population of over 320 million people, that is under fourteen
According to Steve Farkas, from Migration Policy Institute. In his research report: “Focus group discussions made it clear that this conviction is driven by pragmatism and the desire to be understood. Fully 85 percent say it is hard to get a good job or do well in this country without learning English; only 12 percent say it is easy. Some immigrants also see learning English as an ethical obligation. Nearly two in three (65 percent) say "the U.S. should expect all immigrants who do not speak English to learn it," versus 31 percent who say this should be left to each individual to decide.” Up to 85% Immigrant said is it hard for them to get a Job in America without knowing English and only 12% said it was easy. We need give them more job opportunity, Language was a problem to them so why we need to push so much pressure about Language. They will learn English eventually but why so harsh on them with Job. Immigrant come to America to follow their American dream, American prized value. They understanding that without hard work, their dream of America as the land of plenty would not come true. According to Migration Policy Institute. data,“ A large majority (73 percent) think it is extremely important for immigrants "to work and stay off welfare. In focus groups, many talked about the stark reality
The first struggle new immigrants in this country face is learning English. Being able to communicate with other people is a necessity in everyday life. Without knowing the langue immigrants struggle with easy task such as shopping for basic house hold supplies, furthering education,
The problem of immigrants not knowing the English language has been a controversial topic for years. Congress has went as far as making a bill, and speaking out to the public- asking their opinions, usenglish.org. Simple tasks like buying groceries or ordering food at a restaurant are made complicated because of the language complication. If immigrants knew the native language, it can help them in the long run, and it can also increase their pay. Immigrants should be required to learn the language of English if they plan to live in the United States.
In 2015, 1.38 million immigrants moved to the United States. Many of these immigrants came from countries like India and China where, at best, less than fifteen percent of the population speaks English. A language conflict confronts each of these non-English speaking immigrants. They apply for jobs, file taxes, and learn in a language not their own. Language conflicts also affect native born American citizens whose way of English communication does not align with the accepted standard form of English.
There are emotional and legal concerns surrounding whether immigrants should learn to speak English. Domenico Maceri (2009), an award-winning author and foreign language instructor at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria California, states “I never met an immigrant in the United States who needed laws to be reminded that English is necessary to succeed” (par. 9).
