English as a Global Language The phenomenal rise in use of English has mainly taken place over the last two decades. The prospect that a lingua franca might be needed for the whole world is something that has arisen in the twentieth century. Since the 1950s, many international organisations have come into being e.g. the UN and the World Bank. Also political groupings e.g. The European Union and The Commonwealth have come into being. The pressure to make an agreement concerning one language has become urgent, but it is a sensitive issue. (Crystal 2003: 12-13) The need for a global language is mainly appreciated by the international academic and business communities, but also by individuals as the world becomes more and more global. (Crystal 2003: 12-13) 2.2 Why English has grown as much as it has, and why it might be seen as the best option for a global language have more than one answer. One is the geographical-historical reasons, and another is the socio-cultural. The geographical-historical part explains how English has reached its position and the socio-cultural explains how and why it remains that way. (Crystal 2003: 29) 2.2.1 English came to England from northern Europe during the fifth century and started to spread around the British Isles. (Crystal 2003: 30) The historical movement of English around the world began with the
The English language began its climb to world dominance with the rise of the British Empire in the 16th century. During this time English began to spread as the worlds lingua franca for business and trade. With the support of the United States, which at the time was one of the most successful nations in history, english was able to overthrow all previous lingua francas. However, english should not be considered as the “gateway to the world”. Although the english language is widely- spoken around the world, making english language the official language of the world will lead to diminishing cultural diversity.

English has become the most widespread and powerful language on Earth. The imperial English Empire spread English across the globe; from America to Asia. English’s position in the world was cemented by US cultural and diplomatic dominance; evident in American movies, fast food, and clothing. English has proven it is not moving anywhere anytime soon, as English only grows in use over time. Thus a debate has arisen: Should English be the official Universal Language? On one hand, English can harm other cultures, international relations, and scientific development; however, English is very flexible and widely used, making it the perfect candidate for a global language.

English as we know it is indeed the dominant language, but does that mean everyone should learn it? Should English be the global language? Should you have to know English to communicate if you are someone that lives in a place where the native language is something different? The answer is no. However, first you must consider the statement “It is a fact that English is the dominant language in the world today. Everyone, in every country, in order to participate in the modern world, should learn English. After all, a language is just a random collection of words, so how hard can it be”. Personally, I believe it is tremendously difficult to learn a new language as an adult, but in order to make the world go round, we all should know more than one language; no one language should rule. Barbara Wallraff, David Crystal, and John Tagliabue share a few words that connect to the statement to show their personal mindset behind English being a global language. In this essay, I will extract statements from each of the authors that explain their views on a global language to support my overall perception.
In this context, English language inherits the credential of a Universal language that can be nearly understood almost each and every part of the world. The English Language; that has been evolving over centuries, has found its spot under the beam light and is used all over the world as a mode of communication. However, just like any other spoken
In a globalizing world, where language governs our society extensively the dominance of English has effects on linguistic and communicative inequality between native and non-native speakers (Tsuda, 1999). Research on globalisation argues strong evidence that English is the lingua franca or international language and communication of today. But to what extent has globalisation progressed through language? And how has this discourse been linked to provide social, economic, political and technological hegemony? The purpose of this essay is to critique the effects of globalisation on English lingua franca, with reference to international communication. It will identify the western influence of the sprawl of the English language in global markets and whether these enhance international processes. By comparing and contrasting the ideas from Martin Deway (2008) in ‘English as a Lingua Franca and Globalisation’ and Yukio Tsuda (1997) ‘The Hegemony of English and strategies for Linguistic Pluralism’, the critique will provide an analysis on the positive and negative implications that English has globalized through.
A lingua franca refers to the language that is used to facilitate common language between people who may be having different start languages. English can be seen as a Lingua Franca of the modern society that has been extensively used in the areas such as the internet, Business and also other forms of international interaction (Dearden, 2014). In the past decades or perhaps centuries, the use of Latin and Greek as a lingua franca was evident as it was used by many scholars to facilitate their works. The use of the English as a lingua franca starts when Britain is colonizing most of their colonies such as French, Spain, and Portuguese. Several factors facilitate the distribution of English, and finally, it becomes a Lingua Franca.
all over the globe, not only in countries that speak English. Moreover, when new people learn the language, that means the rate of English speakers increases. More than that, most of the studies and research are published in English. For instance, people who are English native speakers write their research in English. Similarly, non-native speakers publish their works in English whatever the reason is, it could be because of their class requirements or a study abroad trip. It can be seen that, the percentage of researchers that write in English increase with the number of people who speak the language. Thus, English became more widespread around people. Nowadays, the knowledge of the English language has become part of the requirements in many and different majors and professions, such as medicine and education. Also, they have equal importance in all countries or regions in the world. In addition, the standardization of English language in these subjects is one of the reasons is why it spread around the world and effects the sciences. Lastly, English is the most common language that is taught to children and adults globally, and the main reason of this is the British colonialism.
In why a Global Language, author David Crystal explains what a global language is, how English has become the global language of today, and also why it is important for the world to have a global language.
In order to predict the possible futures for English as a global language it is imperative we look back in history, the formation of the language, the spread of the language. Which social, political and economic factors meant English would thrive and others would fall behind. The very fabric of life is embedded in pattern and the rise and fall of languages is no different, applying the systems that we’ve seen in the past to modern day will enable us to extrapolate the future paths of languages across the planet far into our social future.
“In the world were over seven thousand languages have exisisted, one language had become dominate. This dominant language is English.” “In the majority of countries throughout the world speak English as their second or first language, no longer just America or England.” English has taken many forms, American English, the Queen’s English, Australian, Canadian English, and several others. Even American English has taken several types of English, Jersey English, East Coast English, West Coast English, Southern English, slang English, and Ebonics. Over one-thousand, five-hundred million people speak English worldwide. It is used in commerce, legislation, and as the basis for communication between countries. Many adolescents learn how to speak English in their early childhood, and many universities worldwide mainly teach in English. Historically, the most widely spoken language has originated from a very powerful nation. Thus, the influence of English-speaking countries is exceptionally great, incentivizing the widespread use of the language. Although English may be deemed the “international language”, it is one of the most difficult dialects and a simpler language may better serve the propose of a universal vernacular.
