A Room with a Viewpoint: Using Social Norms to Motivate Environmental Conservation In Hotels Research Evaluation By John E. Robinson 27 November 2009 A Room with a Viewpoint: Using Social Norms to Motivate Environmental Conservation In Hotels The authors of this article identified the efforts towards building the research conducted while attempting to theorize a study involving environmental conservation among hotel patrons and the reuse of towels. The purpose of this essay is to articulate whether the study provided a theoretical framework; relevant variables; a sufficient hypotheses; a research design; an adequate sized sample; properly sanctioned research; consistent means of data collection and data analysis; and a …show more content…
The hypotheses was clearly stated and used to provide the initial theoretical framework. The hypothesis was also stimulated from an earlier study that stated that a larger hotel chain conducted a similar study using different variables with a common purpose. [ (Trochim, 2006) ] Even though the study indicated that there was a previous study conducted, this study did not provide any relevant feedback on the variables used or the specific findings of the earlier study. The earlier study could have provided more insight to differentiate or to provide similarities to justify the purpose of the newer study. The hypotheses was clear but there could have been more detail to support the background the generated the question. The question in its current state over-simplified the question and the purpose for the study. [ (Goldstein, 2008) ] The study provides a basic research design by incorporating the randomized-experiment and/or quasi-experiment. [ (Trochim, 2006) ] The study provided an experiment that identified a causal effect. In the first experiment, the towels were reused more by subjects who read the sign stating, “JOIN YOUR FELLOW GUESTS IN HELPING TO SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT”. In retrospect, the second experiment that used the sign stating, “HELP SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT” did not
As we discussed in class, every business is faced with these issues and they are important to managers making strategic decisions. One of the first things learned about business is that if there is no demand for a good or service, the firm that provides it will not continue to exist. Over time the hotel industry has continued to change with market conditions and make itself attractive to business
here are many events that have taken place within the context of this controversy that have built up to where we are today. The history includes pivotal events, court cases, proposals, laws, and important figures. Environmental issues and public health effects that are intertwined with such issues were on few people radars until the late 50’s when the federal government began to take charge over these areas. Prior to this, environmental conservation was not a major concern. As early as the 1940’s people started to see adverse health effects due to environmental contamination. The post war period is where environmental issues started to be treated as such. In the end of the year 1953 hundreds of New Yorkers died and many others contracted lung
Americans began to worry about their connection with nature when cities gained popularity and frontier closed. In the late 1800’s, Americans began to take notice the land they relied on for resources was beginning to show signs of overuse (Roosevelt, Theodore). The two most prominent activists for the conservation and preservation of American soil were Gifford Pinchot and John Muir. These two men both fought for regulation on how the land was used, but disputed over what this use looked like. Pinchot believed in conservation which meant using the natural resources to serve the needs of Americans for the longest time (Warren, 201). On the other side of the movement, Muir believed that man should leave nature untouched and left in its purist form.(Muir 40) Conservation and preservation impacted not only the land but, also on the people who lived on the land. The conservation and preservation movement benefited whites of upper and middle class who were able to earn a profit, explore, and utilize the nature that was being conserved/preserved. Consequently, the conservation and preservation movements created greater hardship for those who relied on nature's resources to survive, including, but not limited to the working class of Ely, Minnesota and the Indians in Yosemite National Park.
Our planet relies on vegetation as a source of oxygen and cutting it down takes away that source. This creates an unstable balance where civilization needs to rely on something else for that missing part of oxygen. To what extent should humans prevent deforestation in major forests worldwide? Forests cover about 30% of our entire planet and scientists are predicting that within the next 50-100 years, deforestation will cause all non-protected forests to be cut down (National Geographic). As stated by the NASA Earth Observatory author and editor Rachel Lindsey, “In the Amazon alone, scientists estimate that the trees contain more carbon than ten years of human produced greenhouse gases” (Lindsey). As people cut down trees on a daily basis, the carbon that is held in the tree is released into the atmosphere, adding to the already present global warming problem. As the trees are cleared, people tend to replace this previously forested area with pastures and fields to grow crops on. This is not only bad for the environment, it additionally creates a hotter climate. Meanwhile, Science News author and previous writer/editor for the Chicago Adler Planetarium Janet Raloff shows readers that nitrous oxide has a large impact on the ozone of our planet, contributing to global warming and climate change. The ozone absorbs most of the radiation coming from the sun to the earth. As trees are cut down, it increases the rate of nitrous oxide released into the atmosphere
astes of the peels contribute to pollution of the environment. Recently, food industries are being forced by government to develop productions without secondary residues. Therefore, there are considerable emphases on the recovery, recycling and upgrading their by-products. Since these by-products antioxidant activities (Bauer et al., 2012) and could be converted into a range of commercial products (Martínez et al., 2012). For those reasons, different researches have assayed different methods in order to obtain new raw material products from fruits and vegetables processing by products (Calín-Sánchez et al., 2012). Large scale consumption as fresh fruits, the Citrus fruits are mainly processed to produce juice. The waste of Citrus fruits processing industry left after juice extraction, such as peels, pulps and seeds, corresponding to about 50% of the raw processed, fruit can be used as a potential source of valuable by products, (El Adawy et al., 1999). In Egypt and in many Mediterranean countries, major quantities of the peel are not further processed, if not processed further, it becomes waste produce odor, soil pollution, harborage for insects and can give rise to serious environmental pollution, (Mandalari et al., 2006). Some attempts were made to use these residues as livestock feed. Although their low nutritional value allowed only limited success (Bampidis and Robinson, 2006).
As a Florida resident, the concern regarding current legislation prohibiting contamination of Florida’s natural resources is alarming. It is quite simple to comprehend that pollution is ‘bad’ and that it has long term ill effects on the human population and the natural eco system alike. Many people have heard of lead contamination in drinking water or have observed pictures of sea creatures entangled in plastic, so a broad level of awareness is a non-issue. However, occurrences such as contaminated drinking water are believed to only exist in ‘other states’ or ‘in other countries’ because people conveniently believe that our government has our best interest in mind and feel that it is government obligation to injunction a healthy environment. The issue lies within the confines of government and the exacting measures of how legislation is defined and carried forth. Acknowledgement of substandard practices shall promote the needed sense of urgency to reverse damaging environmental practices and such urgency will only develop through action of government, pursued by the people. In the great state of Florida, environmental regulation should be held in the highest regard, as the ocean and waterways are the main providers of Florida’s flora and fauna. Exploration of federal and state government, as well as the dire necessity for a cleaner environment, will bring forth clarity and will generate momentum toward a flourishing and sustainable environment.
Whether individuals choose to believe in it or not, environmental destruction is a very real and apparent social problem that needs to be addressed before it is too late to save the Earth. Numerous factors such as the climate change, disposal of waste, deforestation, and the quality of air and water impact the destruction of our world. The majority of the blame for our Earth’s deterioration falls on the human race, however, some of the blame does fall on industries, that for example may improperly dispose of their waste. Because of the actions and behaviors of humans as a whole, the environment is suffering irreversible damage. The small population of people that do advocate for change or engage in environment-friendly activities is not enough to help fix the environment alone.
The world faces many issues, but the most important which will affect people living on this planet is that it is slowly deteriorating. Pollution, excessive greenhouse gases, and the ozone layer depletion are causing the environment to slowly degrade and cause chronic and fatal health issues such as cancer. One of the main ways to help the environment be a better place is by having businesses be more environmentally friendly. Businesses don’t have to put a lot of effort in helping the environment, but instead small changes can make a big difference. Businesses can help the environment by reducing their carbon emissions, reducing carbon capping, reducing pollution, and reducing the amount of greenhouse gasses that are being emitted into the air. Businesses helping the environment could also save money for the company and make the world a better place.
The detrimental pollution issue regarding the Lake of the Ozarks is one that has been floating among the Ozarks for about a decade or two. The water quality has gone down the drain in recent years due to numerous factors such as leaking sewage and trash pollution. This issue is an environmental concern because it makes the Escherichia coli (E. coli) levels in the water go up, which can lead to illnesses and deaths of people and animals across the area. There was said to have been as much as 15,000 gallons of sewage that led directly into the Lake of the Ozarks (DNR). This is a problem because it is affecting the health of landowners near the area, fishermen, and local businesses, native wildlife, and aquatic organisms; however, people are asking why it may matter.
I will be evaluating the guest services department at the Hilton Garden Inn in Charlotte, NC. The hotel is part of a much larger Hilton family that is quite successful, but this particular property is suffering from lower guest satisfaction scores, several recent management changes and the resulting low employee morale. The new guest services manager expects that once the new management both in guest services and the hotel overall gets settled, the low morale and slipping guest satisfaction scores can be assuaged by using specialized customer service training. This analysis will follow the progress of the Guest Services Team
Practical implications – The findings can maximize utility by (1) helping consumers identify those amenities of hotel rooms that they have to pay for as opposed to those that they do not; and (2) providing hotel managers with a
The organization has explicitly kept this advantageous environment over other organizations by improving its service capacity. Additionally, the organization ensures that it stays ahead of its rivals by engaging in research and development that focuses on luxury products and markets analysis. The Ritz-Carlton hotel uses data from its research to predict the future of the industry; therefore able to dictate what and how the market will trend in the foreseeable future. Another factor that keeps the organization’s advantage over its rivals is that while rivals tend to become a hotel brand in the industry, Ritz-Carlton has rather position itself to be a leader and lifestyle brand that constantly develop new properties and ensure that customers live the culture of the hotel. The final factor that has kept the advantage of the organization intact is the culture of trust that exists between the management and employees. The leadership of the hotel lives and communicates the organization’s value to its employees who in turn satisfy customers in a way that they often anticipate a return visit. These are some of the reasons that the Ritz-Carlton hotel continued advantageous environment over its rivals has persisted in the hotel and resort industry (Reiss,
Protecting the environment has always been one of the hottest issues of the society. Especially for the hospitality industry, where natural resources are one of the important elements for ensuring sustainable development. Recycling not only helps protect the environment, it also help hotels reduce in wastage, expenses,… and enhance the hotel’s image. The article on the USATODAY talk about the recycling soap program run by Clean The World organization and there are many hotels taking part in the program. This essay will illustrate the positive, negative and how this can affect the hotel image.
In this study, the first objective that being stated is to investigate consumer attitudes towards environmentally responsible or green practices in the hotel industry. Attitudes are how to set the thoughts or feelings about something. It is also an inclination or tendency to respond positively or negatively to a particular idea, object, person or situation. Referring to past paper, the consumer attitudes towards green practices are mostly positive where many of the survey in the past study show a good reaction when being asked about green or eco-friendly practice. According to Tierney, Hunt and Latkova (2011), consumer responded that it is essential that travel industry to become green as they believes that the children futures depends on
