The campus also gets engulfed in smoke due to burning of the garbage, which adversely affects the campus population.
This report takes you through the environmental hazards caused due to the close affinity of the dump yard to BPHC. It focuses on the various problems faced by the students and staff in the campus, and efforts taken by various individuals and organizations to address this problem.
This report also highlights possible solutions and recommendations to deal with this problem.
The Problem and its Effects
At the dump yard one can find garbage piles as tall as hillocks from which billow smoke caused by the rotting of the biodegradable waste. This dump yard had even been compared to active volcanoes that roll up smoke and lava that keep people living nearby on their toes. The difference is that there is no lava, but there is smoke that has been poisoning Jawahar Nagar’s air, water and land for more than a decade.
There is perpetual smog in the dump yard of Jawahar Nagar. In the mornings it is so bad in villages close to the dump yard that the villagers cannot clearly see a person two feet before them. In fact, they can sense the smog even in the night, as it bears an acrid, unbearable stench. The situation is so bad that people do not go out in the morning as they are scared of this fog. Many people suffer from breathing problems and asthma. People have also lost their loved ones to health
There are different ways Americans can dispose of the 200 million tons of garbage they generate each year. In the 1930’s people started to use landfills, as opposed to open dumps, which drew insects and vermin, causing disease. Landfills are made by digging holes in the in the ground and filling it with waste products and then capped. The government safeguards landfills, and each landfill is exclusive to the kind of waste it has. This method is controlled and monitored, as is the method of incineration. Incineration is the burning of solid waste products at a temperature of 850 degrees. There are pros and cons to each method.
The waste contains large amounts of nitrogen and phosphorous, the primary ingredients in fertilizer for plants. This causes the plants to grow faster, so when the waste gets into waterways it can cause algae blooms. The algae can block out the sunlight from other organisms in the water. Algae grows very quickly and dies very quickly. The decomposing algae uses the dissolved oxygen in the water which is essential to the lives of the organisms in the water. It causes a dead zone, an area where it is difficult for organisms to live there. The excessive nitrates in the waste can cause more than environmental problems, it can also be detrimental to our health. The nitrates can get into the groundwater and the surface water. Excessive nitrate exposer can cause blue baby syndrome, the disruption of the thyroid, and bladder cancer. Communities near the hog farms can also suffer from respiratory problems, anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances. Humans can acquire more than 40 different types of diseases from the hog waste. Experts believe that the swine flu outbreak of 2009-2010 was caused by storing it in giant lagoons. Along with environmental and health issues, hog waste creates economic problems. Land value goes down in the communities near the farms due to the health risks and the foul smell. Property tax is based on land value, so when the land value is low, the local
The environmental problem that is damaging environment in Tallassee is air pollution from the landfill which can cause health and environmental problems. Air pollution can harm us when it gathers in the air in great concentrations like in landfill areas. People are then exposed to high levels of air pollutants and they may experience: wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, breathing difficulties, worsening of existing lung and heart
Currently, landfills are responsible for 15 million tonnes of C02 in our atmosphere each year. When garbage decomposes, it creates methane and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This contributes to greenhouse gasses and damages the ozone layer. Landfills take up space, as well as being dangerous and toxic. Rubbish that ends up in our oceans can cause harm to our marine life and poison our water.
From November 1-9, 2016, there was horrible smog that went through Delhi, India. The reason that the smog was so deadly is because in the smog there was a dangerous particle that was roaming in the air. The particle is called PM 2.5. Having PM 2.5 in the air was more than 16 times the limit that the government of India thought was safe (Barry 11). Delhi’s Chief minister called for emergency measures, including a five-day stop on construction, a 10 day closure of a power plant, and a three day closure of about 1,800 schools. Everyone was advised to wash their eyes with running water and to go to a hospital if you are experiencing problems like “breathlessness, giddiness, chest pain, and chest constriction (Barry 11). The way people survived was by wearing masks and by putting purifiers in rooms and staying there. It was very hard for people to get out of the house or to exercise. People couldn’t go out to eat or go to the movies. They can only go places where the air is purified (Barry 11). When it got cold the Delhi’s poor will burn trash and plastic for warmth which adds to the smog(Barry 11). Fireworks will also be set for the Hindu Festival Diwali which would add to the smog as well. There is also normal pollution like cars and construction. People would have to survive the first few days with the smog. “The damage from sustained exposure is the same as smoking more than two packs of cigarettes a day” (Barry 10). People are most likely to identify pollution as their health problems. It was hard for people to work when the government closed everything. There was not a lot of energy in delhi, being the powerplant was down. During the time the smog was in delhi, and when the government was trying to fix it. People could of done their part of helping the environment or even help other people. The article doesn't fully explain how the smog exited Delhi, but I know the air started to
In Cuenlar, anything that can be recycled is, but anything that cannot be recycled is incinerated. Incinerating so much waste is very costly, requiring so much fuel. Working in one of the incineration plants can be very hazardous to one's health, and the city using incineration so much means more workers will have to work in these plants. A garbage incinerator burns the trash, releasing many toxic chemicals into the air. These plants not only are pollutants, they are huge fire hazards. They are using lots of fuel to burn this trash, and if some accident were to happen if all the fuel caught on fire, it would be an enormous disaster. These problems with incinerating trash are important, but they were not overlooked in the construction of the city and have
Reports and case studies from grassroots organizations such as the New York City Environmental Justice Alliance (NYC-EJA) and others have conducted research on this subject. Their comprehensive reports contain information about negative health outcomes. EJA’s mission is to fight for health equity for all. Their campaign “Solid Waste & Transfer Stations”
Trash, garbage, junk, waste materials all are specifically required to be dumped far away from the civilized areas of the city so that no infections get spread out in the civilized areas of the city and even these garbage and trash substances need to be disposed off far away from the farming areas because the germs and dust that they have should not be lying near the farming regions so that no infections get spread in the eatables of the city and because of all these reasons, the junk and garbage things need to be collected from all over the city on a daily basis and then need to be disposed off on the out skirts of the city where no civilized areas are there plus
Pollution has become an emerging issue in our contemporary society. The awful smell reeks of filth as it wraps itself around my body like the second skin. The particles invade my lungs and sting my eyes even if I squint into the city streets at Wichita downtown. They call it "smog," but truly it is a chemical soup that can only shorten our lives and exacerbate health issues. Whenever this happens, some walk-in face masks, others hide in homes with air filtration, but most of us can afford neither. We take food where we can get it and sleep fitfully amidst our own coughing. The old tale of a time when the air was so clean that trees and blossoms had a fragrance and the sky was blue like it is in the VR games advertised from all the electronic

Kan Tingting, a 35 year old cafe manager says, “‘What bothers me the most is that my child may have a very negative view of nature’”(Wong 29). The children of Beijing see smog constantly and suffer daily. Although the ordinary person does not do much to restrain smog, it has killed thousands of people throughout history.
In order to evaluate the threat of emissions and ashes from incinerates, (Adel M. Zakaria) sampled and analyzed smoke, lead, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide, for bacterial count, volatile substances, lead and cadmium. The purpose of the research was to determine if the emissions of pollutants were within the regulatory limits. In order to evaluate the pollutants, air samples were gathered from the chimney stack and determined on a fiberglass filter. After numerous studies, results have shown that although the emissions of pollutant's were within limits, the concentration of lead was far below the maximum limit while the smoke average and Co emissions exceeded the allowable limit by law. Zakaria states that these results elucidate the relation between high concentration of emissions such as carbon monoxide and lower temperatures, as well the shorter residence times with the inhabitants near the
Air pollution levels have a large existence in big cities in Indonesia like Jakarta, Bandung, and so on. This problem happens because the number of motor vehicle use that is not limited [1]. Exhaust smog are the cause of air pollution which has the dangerous effects for people’s health. Exhaust smog is a result of burning fuel oil every motor vehicle. There are two types of burning fuel oil: the first is complete burning [2] and incomplete burning [3]. These types of burning have the differentiation in producing the remainder. Complete burning produces carbon dioxide as a result of remaining while incomplete burning produces carbon monoxide as a result of the rest. Carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide are gases that are harmful to people’s health and could decrease ozone layer [4] [5]. Exhaust smog is hazardous to people’s health. Exhaust smog is a result of burning fuel oil [6]. Consequently, exhaust smog has possibility to contain carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide gas. These harmful gases affect human respiration. Carbon monoxide makes the respiratory system becomes worse. Carbon monoxide will interfere with the process of hemoglobin in breathing [7]. As a result, people will not only feel lack of oxygen but also often feel dizzy and weak. In the other hand, carbon dioxide causes dizziness and fatigue to the sufferer [8]. In the prevention and reduction of the impact of exhaust smog, the Indonesian government decided all motor vehicle users have to check
Pollution is the introduction of harmful substances or products into the environment. It is a major problem in America and as well as the world. Pollution not only damages the environment, but damages us also. It has cause many problems ranging from lung cancer to the greenhouse effect. It is all among us but we continue to live in our own filth. What is the reason behind this flawed logic? In this paper I will examine the problems and solutions for this issue.
Here is the report you requested about the keys issues and potential solutions for toxic waste disposals. The report included an analysis of the possible methods that could solve the destructive techniques that are currently not working. It also featured a comparison between different types of solutions. Namely, it compared standard sanitary sites which are unsatisfactory verses good treatment methods such as recycling, physical or chemical reactions, incineration (high-temperature degradation), Biological degradation, etc.
