Some people believe that public land should be managed by the method of conservation, meaning that the environment and its resources should be used by humans and managed in a responsible manner. If people do not manage the land properly and the resources are not being used sustainably, then the environment can be destroyed, and the conservation method will have failed. Environmentalist John Muir was involved in the creation of The Sierra Club in 1892, which is an environmental organization that advocates for the preservation and protection of public lands.Although we just explored an example of conservationists and preservationists battling it out over land, do you think it is possible that there is a time or situation where both conservation
The Progressive Era was a period of social activism and political reform that grew from the 1890s to the 1920s. Social reformers and journalists, like Jane Addams, Jacob Riis, and Ida Tarbell were some of the powerful voices for progressivism. “They concentrated on exposing the evils of corporate greed, combating fear of immigrants, and urging Americans to think hard about what democracy meant.” Many progressive reformers wanted to end corruption in the government, regulate business practices, address health hazards, and improve working conditions. It was also an era of conservationists. Conservationists are people who protect and preserve the environment and wildlife. Throughout the Progressive Era, there were many conservationists who wrote and described nature, but the most well-known figure in conservation was John Muir. John Muir worked to protect Earth’s beauty by traveling and exploring nature, co-founding the Sierra Club, and by influencing others through his writings and by showing some of the most important people how the wildlife was magnificent.
John Muir is arguably the most influential conservationist in American history. He was an active member in the preservation of the American wilderness from the late 1800’s until he passed in 1914. Muir is often referred to as the “Father of the National Parks” because of his efforts in the establishment of several National Parks. One of the biggest flaws of American history textbooks in need of change is the fact that they do not include the conservationists who have preserved the environment so today the same beauty can be see the way that they saw it. John Muir was involved in many American conservation efforts including the co-founding of Yosemite National Park, founding of the Sierra Club, and his overall career as a
I have always been fond of the West African proverb: “Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far.” Theodore Roosevelt
Frank Lloyd Wright was one of the most influential designers of modern architecture and design. He was born June 8, 1867, in Richland Center, Wisconsin. He studied at the University of Wisconsin in the field of engineering because courses in architecture were not available at the school. In 1887, Wright moved to Chicago were he became a draftsman for Joseph Lyman Silsbee, who was a famous Mid-western architect. While working for Silsbee, Wright designed his first building. Later in that same year, Wright became a designer at the firm of Alder and Sullivan. Wright soon became their chief draftsman. Louis Sullivan, one of the partners at the firm, had a profound influence upon Wright’s work. Wright was forced to leave the firm of Alder and Sullivan because of his "bootleg" homes. People were at first opposed to his new and different approach to architecture and design. In 1893, he began his own practice. Wright soon began to design and build houses of his own that reflected Louis Sullivan’s influence. Wright’s designs also revealed his independent talent and nature.
Theodore Roosevelt’s contribution to the emerging environmental movement in the early twentieth century was a game changer. Roosevelt was the first president to first president to commit completely to the conserving the environment. Roosevelt cared enormously about the environment as he spent a majority of his time as a boy and man hiking, swimming, mountain climbing, hunting, and many other activities, which grew his love for the outdoors. Roosevelt advocated efforts to protect wildlife and wilderness areas to protect, manage, and preserve not only the natural resources that these lands provide us, but also preserve the beauty for future generations. He implemented fifty federal refuges for wildlife, commended five new national parks, eighteen
This suggests that when land is not privately owned, and each private owner responsible, there will be at least one public user who neglects his responsibilities of nurturing and caring for the common parks, rivers, and pastures. Sadly, there will always be irresponsible users who take advantage of the privilege to use the common resources while neglecting to preserve and nurture them. I witness this irresponsibility on a regular basis while walking down the street or enjoying beautiful parks. When users of the commons neglect their individual responsibilities, parks are left smothered in trash, rivers that were once sparkling are suffocated with oil, and pastures are destroyed with over use and over population. With misuse of the commons, views that were once breathtaking in beauty are now breathtaking in stench and disgust.
He created the Sierra Club that worked to protect the environment. Muir wrote numerous articles and books about nature and the conservation of it. It was important to him that there were places in the wilderness that were safeguarded in their entirety and it is of the utmost importance that we continue John Muir’s works. We only have one earth, so we need to do everything we can to preserve it.
A conservatarian world takes a lot of research to realize that it will work. There are a lot of things we live with that most think we can’t live without. Public amenities are a big one. The government funds pools, libraries, school events, local city events, city fairs, and much more. A big argument is if we stop government funding on these, they will cease to exist.
My opinion, Emerson and Muir have depicted their love and passion for nature. Muir as a nature conservationist, explicate the beauty of the nature and how fortunate we are for having not one but two Yosemite. On the other hand, Emerson depicts the beauty and importance of nature to humanity. I been to Yosemite once, I am fascinated to its amazing landscape and superb natural beauty.
In the novel A WindStorm in the Forests, John Muir uses descriptive language to his advantage to show the beauty within the wind. He accomplishes this by appealing to the senses; particularly sight and sound are emphasized in this passage. When the winds are in motion their subtle miracles present themselves. Additionally, Muir makes metaphors referring mentioning the winds are Godly because they are in such unison with the forests they appear. The use of visual descriptions tell the audiences about the winds.
Watson had several views on the environment on in particular, first he made the switch from animal to human research, in addiction instincts behaviors were more apparent in animals than humans, Watson changed his thinking regarding the process of habit forming can be observed and studied but instincts were part of an animals genetic makeup, which could not be studied (Langdal, 2015). These views on the environment developed him into an environmentalist (p.78).
Animals help the environment to maintain the life cycle with food and nourishment. If animals begin to become endangered because of the lack aid we give, species can begin to die. There are many ways to help these social issues and I believe that there is not enough awareness about savoring the earth. Awareness needs to me brought to the attention of civilians to show them how degrading out environment can affect our lives drastically. Recycling has been a problem for years and this problem can decrease is recycling is done properly. Simply reusing materials for household containers, or even making an art project with kids can help the species living in the nature. Cutting down less trees and using less land can give species environments to make the lands their home. Recycling and preserving land should be made more of an awareness to help better shape our
The world consists of many opposing views on how the world should function and how to best interact with it. The first points describes different environmental worldviews and the second point describes the importance of resource conservation.
In contemporary society, environmental protection has aroused widespread concern all over the world. ‘Environmental sustainability is a key issue for human societies throughout the 21st century’s world’ (Charles Vlek & Linda Steg, 2007, pg1). It is inevitable that some natural disasters occur, which causes damage to the environment, but human activity is another main reason for environmental destruction. With the development of technology and economy, a increasing number of human activities tend to be conducted in the natural environment, which hasten the rise of consumption. Ecologists note that the environment supplies many “goods and services”for human beings (de Groot et al., 2002). Bountiful nature offers people many valuable resources, so it is urgent that action is taken to restrict human activities due to the negative effects on the ecosystem. The illustration of different problems will be followed by solutions and evaluation respectively. It will be argued that different kinds of environmental problems have corresponding solutions.
Community-based conservation refers to turning more human-beings into conservationist (Robert et al., 2012) such that locals can form networks with each other, community-based organisation, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and government agencies for the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystems (Robert et al., 2012). It creates a stake for local communities in conserving resources (Brown, 1998) such that the interests of conservation and development can be simultaneously achieved (Berkes, 2004).
