There are a couple potential solutions to solving the issue of women’s and men’s professional soccer players not receiving equal pay. One solution to achieve equal pay for women’s and men’s professional soccer players is FIFA to fundamentally change (Johnson, 2015). FIFA is composed enough to make serious investments in women’s soccer. However, they just choose not to (Johnson, 2015). FIFA wants women to wait until the year 2107 for potential equal pay (Johnson, 2015). The reason given for women’s soccer players having to wait until 2107 for equal pay was that there has been 30 men’s tournaments and only 7 women’s tournaments (Johnson, 2015). Right now, officials disregard the women’s game, claiming that it isn’t worth investing in, while …show more content…
It has been said that one ex-FIFA official even spent a sum of FIFA’s money that exceeded Leroux’s annual salary on an apartment for his cats (Johnson, 2015). As stated in an article by Johnson (2015), “The Women’s World Cup might not draw the same attention as the Men’s World Cup yet, but if FIFA were to begin spending anywhere near as much on women’s soccer as men’s soccer, national programs would be better able to sustain themselves and their league counterparts. The money FIFA pays to national teams could be used to improve training, facilities, and salaries”. Also, national programs could invest in raising the profile of the women’s game through advertising and youth development (Johnson, 2015). Moreover, “FIFA could require national programs to meet certain standards that would help ensure the success and longevity of the sport, such as living wages, health care, proper training facilities, equipment and travel for women’s teams, as mentioned by Bitch Magazine’s Stephanie Yang” (Johnson, 2015). If FIFA prioritized women's soccer, there would be more competitive women's tournaments with bigger audiences (Johnson, 2015). Overall, the power and influence of FIFA should present an opportunity to promote equality globally …show more content…
However, there are a few other strategies for a solution to women’s and men’s professional soccer players not receiving equal pay. One strategy would be people outside the sport speaking out in favor of pay equity between the men’s and women’s teams. Political leader Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) recently spoke out in favor of pay equity, which helps the chances of women’s soccer players earning high salaries (Palmer, 2015). However, many others outside the sport will need to speak out to make it possible for women’s soccer players to even earn near the salaries of men’s soccer players. Another strategy would be in addition to player’s fame from the field, they can also interact with the public through their social media pages (Palmer, 2015). Many of the players do so already, but the more they interact positively with the public the better. Players that become household names, like Carli Lloyd recently has, will almost definitely earn more through endorsements and appearing in more ads for companies (Palmer, 2015). An additional strategy for solving the issue of women’s and men’s professional soccer players not receiving equal pay would be players building side businesses off the field, which offers another way for the players to leverage their star power and grow their salaries
People all over America and the world are consumed with watching athletes perform in their various sports. Both male and female athletes compete at such incredible levels that require physical talent and drive. Professional athletes are known to get paid salaries that reflect their talent and abilities. Regardless of gender, professional athletes are drafted to receive professional pay. However, equal pay for male and female athletes with the same credentials does not occur today. There is a belief that male athletes are worth more than female athletes and are better at promoting themselves. Also, women salaries are lower because of their gender and are not
Lopiano complains that there’s too much of a salaries gap between man and women playing the same sports. “The right to play has been established. However, the issue that has been confronted is the barrier to being treated equally when it comes to money” (Lopiano 1). Most people will say women’s tennis matches are more exciting than men’s matches; men’s victory purses are still considerably higher than women’s victory purses. Top women tennis players earned 59 cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts. The average total purse was $63,031,000.00 for top men players and $41,000,000.00 for top women players (Daniel Frankl 2). In soccer, the Women’s World Cup soccer team was promised $12,500 if they won compared to the $300,000 male players were to receive. The payout for women players was increased to $50,000 because fans protested the unfair payout gap between the male and female players (Lopiano 1); it’s still 1/6 the payout
To begin with, woman soccer players suffer inequality in pay. The woman’s soccer players play the same hours as the men’s soccer players. Also, woman soccer players beat the same soccer challenges on the field as the men soccer players. Therefore, woman’s soccer players should be paid the same amount. Some may think that, “[e]ven as the women broke record after record last summer, on the pitch and in the television
In the United states females make about seventy seven cents for every dollar a male makes. This is a huge difference and is unequal if both sexes are getting paid for doing similar jobs. Even though this seems like a huge difference in wages, the difference in wage is a huge difference in professional sports. Many would argue that female athletes should get paid the same as male athletes, but there are also many that would argue the opposite. Gender equality laws call for this, but the fact that female athletes do not provide the same profit as male athletes is not noted when it comes to these laws. Next, both males and females spend the same amount of training when it comes to strengthening their teams, but at the same time male athletes do
In the world of sports there are many spectators from around the world who invest their time and money in their favorite sports teams. The debate over the equality for men and women in sports has been a popular topic amongst people, especially with the rise in women playing sports. According to the article “Where Girls Are Missing Out on High School Sports”, the number of women playing college-level sports today is more than five times as high as it was in 1972. Despite all the praise for the success in women playing professional sports, there is one underlying dilemma that has been receiving much attention in the media. Nevertheless, there is an extreme pay gap between men and women playing in professional sports that should be fixed because
According to the article How Does the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team Pay Compare to the Men? in the past 5 years the women's team has played 40-50% more games. Which means they are physically doing almost twice the amount of work and still being paid substantially less. The women out of those large amount of games have twice as many victories from 2012-2016 as the men's team. The women's team won 88 games compared to the men's 44 (Santhanam). The women's team won the 2015 world cup and only received 1.6 million dollars compared to when the men won and received 9.3 million dollars. Women deserve equal pay if they are better than a men’s team. No matter what gender a person is, their salary should be based on their
Everyone has studied history throughout their educational years. They talked about the rights men had and what the rights women didn’t have. Now you would think that everyone is paid equally, well that’s not true. The U.S. Women’s Soccer team has been fighting for equal pay to their male counter parts since the beginning of the year 2016. They have made videos and had many of interviews about their fight. The way to fix this problem is to continue to fight to have equal pay to their male counterparts.
Ladies and gentleman (Pathos, direct address), can you imagine a world where men and women, who work the same job, receive the same pay? Women should be given equal pay as men’s athletics because they have equal opportunities. As written in a legislation in 1972, it is stated that “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” (Ethos, appeal to audience) This statement proves that women should not be excluded and that they in fact do have a right when it comes, not only to sports, but to basic needs as well. Seeing as how women have proved themselves in the past several decades, and proved to the world that they are much more than what people believe they are. For example the US Women’s national soccer team, has been seen more and more in the news than ever before because of their accomplishments, and how much they have been winning. The women put their heart and soul into every game and practice that they play. Imagine that you are on a team that means the world to you and you are seen as one of the number one players in the world. You play every game with heart and passion and never give anything less than satisfactory. When it comes to the end of the day, after all of the hard work you put in and give to the team and corporation, you are not given the equal amount of pay or respect
I choose FIFA because of the giant inequality gap between the men and the women. LeanIn is designed the bring men and women together, and FIFA should embrace this as it’s been proven that there is a big audience for women’s soccer. 26.7 million viewers watched the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final. However, women’s soccer is not treated equally with the men. Sepp Blatter is on record saying that women players should wear short shorts to gain more viewers. Also, the women World Cup games were played on artificial turf causing opposed to the men who played on grass, and men’s games are given incredible investment and promotion, that the women do not receive. The FIFA LeanIn program would heavily emphasize promoting the women as equal to the men. Giving the women players the same type of investment given to promoting the men can go a long way to driving interest and attendance for the women. To further promote this movement, men’s leagues such as the Premier League can invoke a uniform change where players wear jersey badges that promote the LeanIn campaign along with placing banners around the field. Without heavily investing into equal rights and equipment, the gap between the men and women will never
Moreover, the second solution could be increasing the pay of female athletes at the professional level. In comparison to the pay that men’s
This podcast will distinguish the stiffening number of the lack of equal pay, rights and opportunity for women involved with sports. This topic was selected because this is evident based on the staggering numbers of women performing and displaying either equal or more in terms of success, achievement or work load and still are behind when comparing salaries between men and women. Hopefully, this podcast will shine some light on this subject and bring awareness. Based on prior research conducted the numbers are comparing the USA women 's soccer. It is safe to say these figures and statistics show similar disparities in all sports with both women and men. Educating the readers, and providing basic knowledge and understanding in regards
People are starting to pay more attention to the women’s team so they did some research on how much each team makes. In an article titled “How does the U.S. women’s soccer team pay compare to the men?” the publisher learned that the men receive $76,000 to be on the World Cup roster, and the women get $15,000. That is a major difference in numbers! Also, to qualify for the World Cup team the men get $2.5M and the women only get $345,000 which again is a dramatic difference. Additionally, if the men’s team wins the World Cup the team receives $9.3M while the women’s team only receives $1.8M. In 2015, the United States Women’s National Team won the World Cup and still “earned four times less than the men while performing demonstrably better.”
This is real. Women don’t get paid the equal amount as men do. Women are paid on average only 77% of what men are paid. Their median pay was only equal in personal care and service work as of 2009. The Fair Pay Act of 2009 prohibited gender based discrimination between men and women who perform the same skill, job, or responsibility. For example, the U.S. women’s soccer team is way more successful than the U.S. men’s soccer team. Still, the women’s salary cap is 11 times less than than the men’s salary cap. The U.S. women’s soccer players still fight for equal pay.
According to FIFA statistics, there are 26 million girls and women in 180 countries who play football. The first World Championship was held in 1991 in China. FIFA’s records show that in the last 10 years, women’s participation in football has increased by 210% in the USA, by 250% in Switzerland and by 160% in Germany. These are positives, although the level of sports media coverage remains very low. It is also clear that gender imbalance in SGB governing structures is now firmly on the agenda and there is some recognition that balanced boards make good business sense. The IOC (International Olympic Committee) has recognised that targeting only changes in the gender ratio may not be sufficient to increase the number of women on sport governing
What is equality? Equality is the state of being equal in rights, opportunities, and status. Equality is what every single person deserves; men and women should be treated equivalently. Equality isn’t just something we yearn for, it’s something that is essential and necessary. The U.S. women’s soccer team is being treated unfairly, thus creating an injustice. It shouldn’t matter what race, what religion, what gender you are because soccer is universal, respect should be too. They play the same game, it’s time they get paid the same. We all have a love and respect for the beautiful game, it’s time we have that for each other. The U.S. women’s soccer team should be paid the same as the U.S. men’s soccer team because we are equal.
