In “Of the Pernicious Effects Which Arise from the Unnatural Distinctions Established in Society” by Mary Wollstonecraft she discusses the inequality of women in our society. In the words of Wollstonecraft, ”There must be equality established in society, or morality will never gain ground, and this virtuous equality will not rest firmly even when founded on a rock, if one half of mankind be chained to its bottom by fate, for they will be continually undermining it through ignorance or pride." According to Wollstonecraft, the only way for our society to become morally sound, we must allow woman to be equal to man. Wollstonecraft feels if society were to grant women an opportunity to be independent then they would be, successfully. Honestly, allowing women to be anything other than just a woman would make her an overall better individual. Again, a woman is herself before she is a wife or a mother, so she must continue to develop in all fields. Women have a lot of potential to do things such as study politics, art, become midwives, get jobs, and become self-aware of their virtues. Women are just as likely as anyone to cure diseases, help release people of legal dilemmas, and the like. When we stifle the growth of one, we hinder the advances of many. As women get married and adapt to a stable life, they have no way of acknowledging their virtues. In order for women to be seen as more than wives and mothers they must show how their virtues and independent selves can benefit the public. Likewise, one title does not cancel out another for women. For instance, in order for a woman to be a better citizen, a better mother, a better wife, she must be allowed rational discourse. If a woman were to explore herself she would become better in all aspects of self. Wollstonecraft makes independence out to be an investment and if all men really do speak is money then it would be wise for them to listen up. Women have to be acknowledged as individuals whether that be as a married woman or a single woman
