Last month I released an article highlighting Dreamville singer Ari Lennox. In my opinion, Ari is going to be the next female artist to rise to fame alongside acts like SZA, H.E.R., and Jorja Smith. Her “PHO” EP that was released a couple of years ago flew under the radar, but I feel she'll get the proper push that she deserves. While she gets the spot on this list, I believe that Dreamville as a label has the potential to own 2018. Artists like Cozz and Bas have confirmed to fans that they are in fact working on new music. J.I.D released an album earlier this year, but I'm sure he'll try to build off of the momentum that he gained. J. Cole has popped up every once in a while, and despite him saying he doesn't care, I know that he has …show more content…
Once again, CyHi is another artist that proved I’m a genius with a Gucci Mane level of ear for talent. CyHi is an artist I’ve watch grow for nearly seven years now, and even I didn’t think he had a “No Dope On Sunday” type of album in him. The album received praise from both critics, and fans as many consider it one of the best albums of the year. In an era of SoundCloud rappers he was able to make an album full of bars that everyone can enjoy. Despite CyHi riding high on the album, he confirmed that he already has more projects on the way. He started his “Hystori” series a few years ago, and he said we can expect for him to continue it this February. Kanye is allegedly dropping next year, and we’ve been hearing rumors of “Cruel Winter” for years now. With Kanye and Pusha T preparing to drop, this is the perfect time to release their compilation album with the success that Big Sean, 2 Chainz, Travi$ Scott, and CyHi all saw in 2017. 2018 could be the year to move CyHi up in the ranks, and their aren’t many rappers that deserve the opportunity more than him. Does it look like Takeoff got left off my list? Takeoff is probably one of the most disrespected rappers currently in hip-hop. From him receiving slander for being left off of “Bad & Boujee”, to iPhone software Siri not acknowledging him when you ask her who is in Migos, Takeoff is looked at as the irreverent member of the group. If you’re like me, you’re in the minority of believing that he is just as
Kanye Omari West, an icon of hip-hop, pop culture, fashion and music in general. Kanye Omari West, a person belittled against and a person subjected to a life of racism and hate. Born on June 8th, 1977, Donda West, West’s mother, always knew he was destined for greatness, but did she know her son would turn out to be the Kanye West, a man lacking the respect he deserves for transforming a big part of the music we listen to on this very day? West came onto the scene in the late nineties but didn’t release The College Dropout until 2004, an album that took everybody by surprise. Kanye West changed the gangster filled rap genre by releasing his positive, soulful debut album, changing the way rappers
There may be no bigger name in rap music right now than Chicago's own Chance the Rapper. His third mixtape Coloring Book is now available on all major music streaming platforms (Apple Music, Soundcloud, Spotify, Tidal, etc.) and he is also the first artist EVER to break The Billboard Top 10 Albums chart with streams only. He has burst onto the scene as a "lone wolf" of sorts; refusing to sign to a record label, releasing all of his music for free, and combining rap, jazz, and gospel music more beautifully than anyone we've ever seen in the music industry. To celebrate Lil Chano's recent success let's check out his ten best songs.
On September 29, he released a new CD called “Black and Blue”. This was released on, Marquise Knox
Music can rock your world, enlighten your mind and change your perspective. When you think of rap music who comes first to mind? Without hesitation, it must be the self acclaimed best rapper alive, Lil Wayne. He alone can make such statements as “My picture should be in the dictionary next to the definition of definition” (Wayne, “Shoot Me Down”). Lil Wayne is a prominent force in the rap world. His debut Album in 1999, Tha Block is Hot went double platinum upon its release and even his lowest selling album is still certified as gold according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Rollingstone Magazine declares “Lil Wayne is one of the most popular — and prolific — recording artists in the world” (Kreps). Top this with
Hell, looking back at my childhood, it sure does feel good knowing I was born a millennial. I don’t even want to know who I’d be today if I had grown up in a generation where Lil’ Wayne wasn’t regarded as the world’s most symbolic and quintessential rapper thanks to his ‘gangsta’ esthetic and unparalleled wordplay. Sadly, paragons with the likes of Wanye have gradually strayed further away from God’s light through the years; consequently, as the cycle of life continues to push forward and more people begin adding to the craft, it’s impossible to imagine where people will place these artists on their list decades down the line. Prayerfully not too low, but due to the unfathomable amount of overrated, mindless rappers that both music listeners have tagged as faces for a new generation, hip-hop culture should be prepared to reach its lowest point. This new-wave of overly-glorified rappers need to start being taken for what they truly are and once you get a listen of their generic, monotonous music, it goes without saying that they are average at best.
In addition to signing with the biggest record label, the artist has since released three albums. Unique in their own ways, they all have different stories they tell. Comparatively, each elaborate on life, love, happiness and struggles. Together with other well known artists, helps grow album popularity. Equally important, collaborating together with Drake creates big names for artists themselves. Not only has every album progressed for the singer and songwriter, fans
After months of songwriting, processing, and beat production, Kid Cudi and the label released Cudi’s first mixtape, “A Kid Named Cudi” in February 2008. The mixtape included many genres from Hip-Hop, jazz, alternative rock, and soul. The single that caught the attention of everyone and the social word was “Day N’ Nite”, the song went #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. With the song gaining so much popularity, remix versions of the songs were made from Pitbull, Trey Songz and other notable artists. The mixtape caught the attention of Kanye West, who loved the mixtape and the personality of Kid Cudi so much that he signed him to his label, GOOD Music, later that same
Nyzzy has worked rigorously hard on improving and progressing not only as a rapper, but as an artist. His solo mixtape debut was entitled, "Nothing Nyce," and definitely emerged onto the hip hop scene with hits like, "Live It Up," "I'd Just Rather," "Superstar," and "Nights Like This." A few of his songs from his first album made appearances in television shows and movies including; "Get Hard," "American Horror Story," "St. Vincent," "Beyond The Lights," and more.
I think we need more people in the industry like Rich Homie Quan. I think this because Rich Homie Quan makes good music and doesn’t care about what anyone think or say about him. Rich Homie Quan is known for rapping and singing. Rich Homie Quan mostly raps about his life story and all the things that he been through. Like going to jail and talking about all the things he went through during his childhood.
“ Every time Gucci Mane gets out of jail, he likes to go straight to the recording studio – it is a vibrant habit that is acknowledged among his fans as a testament to both his work ethic and his turbulent life”(Sanneh 1).
After the death of his sister with whom he was very much attached and who collaborated in the song ‘Not That Nigga’, he was having a hard time. After that Lil Wayne and he decided to become collaborators. He signed a contract with Jive Records and released his album ‘Mind of Mystikal’. The next year he signed to another label No Limit Records and he released Unpredictable in November.
He shows up for major acts like Frank Ocean, and is appeared on the new N.E.R.D. album with “Rollinem 7’s”. Andre also appears to be keeping an ear out on the youth as he appeared on Richmond rapper $ilk Money song “Decemba”. He clearly has the ability to write at the age of 42, but is he in a mental space to craft a 10 to 14 track album by himself? He has nothing that we can compare to an “Illmatic”, “Blueprint”, or even a “Good Kid Maad City”. As a rap legend with the star power he has, making fans wait over a decade for an album is setting himself up for disappointment. In the social media era where people are able to give an instant reaction to anything, a number of people today do not take the time to fully digest an album. If Andre focused on making an experimental style album, some would easily dismiss it because it’s not
In the year of 2009 drake released his first mixtape So Far Gone and that placed him in the market with many hit singles since then. What some people didn’t know is that drake now holds the record for the most number one hits on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Chart. Drake has released four studio albums, two extended plays, four mixtapes, one collaborative mixtape, Seventy-seven singles (including fifty-two as a featured artist),seven promotional singles and thirty-six music videos. Drake is the name of more than one artist: 1) Canadian actor/rapper 2) polish sea folk band 3) electronic DJ 4) heavy metal from Chile 5) 1960s US garage rockDrake is the name of more than one artist:
He started working on another album, Bad. The album was number one on
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy boasted an amazing maximalist approach that boarded on a hip hop opera symphony with lyrics that were memorable and verses that can rank as the best hip hop verses of all time. It was an album filled with legendary moments that music fans will remember for ages, and moments Kanye fan boys will yell at his concerts. This reaction by hip hop fans for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was immediate. For Yeezus, it was different. Yeezus’ minimalistic approach threw fans and critics off due to the very left field and experimental approach he took for this album, both sonically and thematically. In spite of this, Yeezus still manages to hold up it’s quality, value, and impact in comparison to his preceding albums while becoming one of the most important hip hop albums of all time.
