What is the reason behind the closing of Manila Metropolitan Theatre? What are the details about the restoration of the Metropolitan Theatre? Why is MET considered as a cultural heritage? Those are the questions our group is trying to answer through this essay. As our group is doing the research about the Manila Metropolitan Theatre, we found the answers in our questions. The Metropolitan Theatre was considered to be the Grand Dame of Manila and also as the “crown jewel” of the theatres in Manila. The person behind the unique design of the theatre was Arch. Juan Arellano. The MET was officially introduce on December 10, 1931. There are also great artists behind the making of MET, one of them is the National artist Fernando Amorsolo. An Italian sculptor named Francesco Ricardo Monti is the one who made the sculptures of Adam and Eve found in the main lobby. The former First Lady Imelda Marcos borrowed a 20 million pesos from the Government Service Insurance System or simply the GSIS. Imelda Marcos failed to pay her debt from the GSIS and this is where it begins, the confusion on who the real owner of the Manila Metropolitan Theatre. The Supreme Court decided to shut down MET because of this issue but then since the money used to buy the MET was from the GSIS but First Lady Imelda Marcos just failed to pay her debt so the title was given to the Government Service Insurance System. The conflict on the owner was also one of the reason why the renovation of the Metropolitan Theatre is not always finished.
