Breaking the authority of knowledge
I sighed comfortably seeing the standard lecture setting in ENGI120 classroom with forty to fifty white chairs and tables facing front and PowerPoint of blue background and white characters projected on the screen: it looked just like the classes I had in Chinese high school. I confidently sat in the front row, laid my notebook on the desk, turned to a new page and wrote in the first line: “August 26th, 2017, ENGI120 first class”. Sitting on the chair with my back up straight, I waited for a traditional lecture on the engineering design process. Dr. Wettergreen, who later became one of the most important mentors I have ever had, was already standing in front of the podium, his white shirt buttoned up to

Did that PowerPoint contain all his notes? He hasn’t defined those terms yet, then how should I learn those terms? I stared at the blank spaces on my notebook and anxiously span my pen. Not until a student trying to squeeze through behind my chair whispered “excuse me” was I pulled back to the classroom. I stuffed my notebook into my bag and hurried to the workspace with the class.
There were several worktables in the space, with numerous engineering tools that I could not name crammed into boxes and placed on the surface. I chose the table where the task was designing a bike camera. Sitting down, I looked at my teammates awkwardly, not knowing where to start, and they looked back with the same embarrassment.
“Start by communicating what your goal for this project is and building prototypes with your ideas.” Dr. Wettergreen encouraged in a friendly voice. He was moving through the students, almost hidden by some tall classmates.
In the next few weeks, we followed the engineering design process, setting criteria for our project, brainstorming the design and building a prototype with Dr. Wettergreen by our side. During device testing, I was confused about how to quantitively examine the durability of our device. I raised my hand and Dr. Wettergreen came to our table, avoiding the scattered cupboard and planks of wood on the floor on his way.

Draw a long horizontal line on a sheet of paper. Ask the student what he knows about the topic. As the student talks, the adult draws simple pictures (or writes keywords), representing the student’s ideas along the straight line. The adult discreetly arranges the pictures in a logical order during this brainstorming process. At the end of the exercise, the student “reads” the assignment to the adult, using the pictures (or keywords) as prompts. This verbal rehearsal helps the student hear the logical flow of the language. The student then completes the writing assignment using the timeline as a visual
In the modern world, competition is the bond that holds society together. Every person can relate to it whether that competition is within a sport, video game, or a court hearing. The Canadian legal structure operates on the adversarial system. Neil Brooks defines an adversarial system as one in “which the parties and not the judge have the primary responsibility for defining the issues in dispute and for carrying the dispute forward through the system” (Brooks, The judge and the Adversary system.p.341-353). Within the adversarial system the judge has less of a role. He’s passive due to his lack of participation in the fact-finding. Its opposing system is the
The presentation Aid the speaker chose to use is a projector hooked up to a computer using a PowerPoint presentation, the use of these really brought out the message is trying to get across. We have some people that absorb information by listening others are visual learners so he covered both bases.
When our group first started brainstorming ideas for the capstone project, we came across several obstacles.
Traditionally, the positive image of a company or a brand is very important in the contemporary world. As a result, the question of morality of each individual working within an organization is of a paramount importance. In such a situation there should be no exceptions from the rule and executives could not be in a privileged position. This is the desirable ideal many companies strive to achieve at least in a public eye. However, the reality turns to be quite different from what is expected and the analyzed case of an executive’s double standard is just another evidence of the fact that the real life is so complicated that the common rules, including moral
This was by far the most challenging course that I have encountered while obtaining my Master’s Degree in Educational Technology from UCMO. That is not a negative comment as this course has actually impacted me professionally more than any other course I’ve taken to date. This course has taken more time to complete the assignments, more of my attention to detail, and more of my creativity. The last point was the best part about this course. I consider myself to be fairly creative and this course definitely allowed me to do that while bringing my somewhat odd personality to a professional forum. For this I am grateful. Let’s get to the good stuff, shall we?
From day one, I noticed the relative ease of the course. The two friendly instructors welcomed the entire class, and they presented the material in a simple and comprehensible manner. The small, four-room classroom accompanied a total of eight students
Throughout Frankenstein it is evident that Victor and Robert express their thirst for knowledge, which often leads to destruction. Through analyzing Frankenstein it is possible to find many examples that illustrate the fact that wanting to have more knowledge can be extremely dangerous. Firstly, as Victor is creating life he is able to create a humanoid monster, unfortunately he is appalled by his creation and becomes very ill. Afterwards, when Victor is completing the female companion for his original creation, Victor realizes that this will only create more destruction. Finally, as Walton is on a journey to the North Pole he encounters difficulties that nearly kill him and his crew. This shows that Victor and Walton are repeatedly

In his work, “The Tyranny of Experts”, William Easterly explores those who would call themselves “experts” in community development. Easterly himself would not agree to anyone designating themselves as such an expert; he believes that development within the community is not something that one can plan, but something that comes about when individuals create solutions to the problems they face. Easterly recognizes that many of these experts are intelligent individuals, and so he sets out to engage the process that such experts use rather than meet them face-to-face.
"Look for experimental approaches where there's lots to learn - projects with small downsides but bigger upsides. Too often we take on projects where the cost of failure is prohibitive, and just hope for the best."
