Tourism in Chitral (Kalash Valley)—”A Historic and Cultural Perpective”

Introduction:
It is an arduous undertaking to explain an area in context of its history and culture. It requires a lot of painstaking study and research to explore a topic with reference to its history. However, by dividing and analyzing its parts we can manage to make our work easy. Chitral as a known district of Khyber PukhtunKhwa and Pakistan has been the centre of attention for centuries. Its peculiar culture has drawn worldwide attention of experts and tourists. Anthropologists, sociologists, historians, and adventurers have made their way into this valley to explore its mysteries. This unique geographical place has proved itself to be elusive and difficult to be documented as compared with the rest of places. Its value as a major tourist spot has almost admitted by all segments of society. We will try to understand Chital with emphasis on Kalash valley and its culture. Kanishka a 3rd century Bhuddhist ruler of the Kushan Empire occupied Chitral. However, the terrain of Chitral proved an unwieldy area and they have to vacate it soon enough. Since Chitral was placed in the centre of many warring empires and states of that time therefore, it was the reason that the area was embroiled in conflicts with its neighbors. In 4th century AD, the Chinese captured the area and subject it to strict laws and forced labor. In the ensuing period Chitral experienced a time of unrest. It remained under its neighbor’s direct or indirect influence where the local were forced to pay tribute and taxes.
