Craniotomy/Trepanation:
Good Procedure of Life Changer?
There are many people who suffer from certain illnesses of the brain that cannot be cured all the time. Although when there is a procedure that can be done to get rid of the pain that some might go through and possibly even cure them, why wouldn’t we want to at least try it? Craniotomy/Trepanation is an example of these types of situations and sometimes it can be a good thing, that does come with its own personal consequences.
A Craniotomy/Trepanation is a procedure where they remove some parts of the bone from the patient’s skull to uncover the brain. Tools are then used to cut out the bone section, called bone flap. The bone flap is briefly cleared away, then restored after the brain surgery is completed. There are many purposes of doing this kind of procedure to a patient; including treatment of brain treatments, clearing away blood clots, helping with

A consent form will be given to the patient that allows the neurologist permission to go through with the procedure and the patients can ask questions as they read the form carefully. The doctor will do a complete medical history and a physical exam to assure that the patient is in good health before the procedure. The patient will get a preoperative neurological exam and it will be compared with postoperative exams. The patient will then be asked to not eat before the procedure, usually after 12:00 AM. It is very important to tell the doctor of pregnancy and medication (prescription, over-the-counter.) that the patient is taking. The patient may receive a sedative to help them relax, the areas around where the operation is happening will be shaved. Also, the patient must not take any substances (drinking or smoking) a week before or two weeks after the procedure has been
The surgical technologist can chose to specialize in neurology. Neurosurgery is one of the most sophisticated specialties with its advanced surgical procedures. The nervous system entails the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and the structures around them. The procedures can be anything from congenial defects, traumatic injury, and cancers. An example of neurosurgery is the craniotomy. This involves an incision of the cranium so the surgeon can access the brain. Cranioplasty is a procedure that repairs defects in the skull. This procedure is done to relieve headaches, and to prevent secondary injury to the brain (AST, 2014, pp 1142-1149).
The process of consent should apply not only to surgical procedures but all clinical procedures and examinations which involve any form of touching. This must not mean more forms: it means more communication. As part of the process of obtaining consent, except when they have indicated otherwise, patients should be given sufficient information about what is to take place, the risks, uncertainties, and possible negative consequences of the proposed treatment, about any alternatives and about the likely outcome, to enable them to make a choice about how to proceed.”5
What makes a Neurosurgeon? The money? The type of houses they get to live in? The places they get to go? The car they drive? Sure it could be all of those things. But what really makes a Neurosurgeon? Is it ambition? Is it courage? Is it the aspiration to save lives? Is it the reaction they get after a successful operation? Or is it a dream that they have dreamt of becoming a Neurosurgeon? Well, it's all of those things. I’ve dreamt of becoming a Neurosurgeon since I was in 6th grade. Ambition is one of my traits. I’ve always had the aspiration to help others, but to save lives that’s another level I want to achieve. The reaction I get when I do something great internally is something that I cannot explain. That’s a Neurosurgeon. Neurosurgeons are specialized physicians and their specialty is doing surgery on the Nervous System. Let’s look more in depth at becoming a Neurosurgeon.
The appropriate assessment of patients prior to surgery to identify coexisting medical problems and to plan peri-operative care is of increasing importance. The goals of peri-operative assessment are to identify important medical issues in order to optimise their treatment, inform the patient of the risks associated with surgery, and ensure care is provided in an appropriate environment secondly to identify important social issues which may have a bearing on the planned procedure and the recovery period and to familiarise the patient with the planned procedure and the hospital processes.(American Society of Anaesthesiologists)
Craniosacral Therapy and Myofascial Release can assist with a wide range of conditions and health issues: from
When a patient needs to have a medical procedure performed, they must first consent to the procedure. Before accepting or rejecting the treatment, the practitioner is required to give the patient information pertaining to the risks and benefits of the procedure, as well as available alternatives. Additionally, the patient must be mentally competent enough to make an informed decision, and not be manipulated or coerced into a decision.
Did you know that there are about 100,000 miles of blood vessels in the brain (Neurologist 2011)? It is true, which is why neurosurgeons must take special care when operating procedures in this vital part of our body. Neurosurgeons, equally known as brain surgeons, specialize in the activities occurring in the brain and nervous system. Training to become a brain surgeon requires a 6-7 year neurosurgical residency following four years of medical school (citation). Brain surgeons primarily perform complex surgeries on the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. Becoming a brain surgeon result in significant benefits such as they heal problems in one of the most complex parts of the body, the brain, they help all
The sound of the sirens were trapped in her head. Meanwhile, she sat in the emergency room waiting area praying for good news. “How did this happen?” she thought over and over again. After what seemed like forever, the neurosurgeon came out and broke the news to her and her family. Her father’s car accident had broken his spine in three different places, broke a couple of ribs, and left him bruised and scratched all over. The neurosurgeon said it was a miracle that he had no actual brain damage. The neurosurgeon operated on her father’s spine and put him back together with a rod. After the surgery, she couldn’t thank the neurosurgeon enough for all she had done for her father. From that day on, she knew she wanted to be a neurosurgeon so she could help people the way a neurosurgeon helped her father. Neurosurgeons are everyday heroes that have worked very hard to get to where they are, for this
Over the years, brain surgery has evolved substantially. Looking into multiple types of surgery, surgery is able to be quite unusual. Humans will cut into each other a lot of times in order to get rid of deadly disease and even just to remove excess body fat. The reality that we do not marvel about these on a daily basis shows how advanced surgery has grown over the years. Surgery is a safer and more reliable tool including a necessary component of health care. Previously, the surgeries themselves were brutal from lack of understandings toward anesthesia and none of the tools accessible today with operations forced and traumatic. With the present tools through surgery, brain surgery has changed greatly. This article chosen was aligning with
It states the procedure to be performed along with any possible complications that may occur. Educating the patient prior to signing the informed consent is required by law. Documentation of the surgical time-out should also be done to make sure that the entire team has an understanding and agrees with the procedure to be performed on that specific patient by a specific surgeon.
This consent has to be signed by the patient , the guardian or patient 's power of attorney . Severe reactions to the procedure leading to cardiopulmonary arrest / death are beyond the health care team 's capacity . As long as there were no mistakes when the procedure was done there will be no repercussions . Emergency apparatus and pharmaceuticals are available for any emergencies that may arise during the after the procedure
The oldest known surgical procedure is trephining (htt). This procedure is the removal of a piece of the skull bone. There are four different ways that trephining can be preformed. The four different methods include: rectangular, boring and cutting, scraping, and grooving (htt).
The long working hours job, household duties, and other responsibilties cause a lot of stress to the people, leading to ill health. High blood pressure, depression, stroke, and other mental disorders are the common problems. Taking medicines, steroids etc can provide comfort temporarily, and can cause side-effects in the long run. So, it is best to go for the natural treatment, which is safe, and does not effect you in the future. Consult the best practitioner, offering craniosacral therapy in Florida.
Orthognathic reconstructive surgery is a procedure carried out by a oral and maxillofacial surgeon to correct problems with the jaw. The surgery takes place in a hospital and involves the straightening and realigning of the jaws. Templates, screws, wires, and surgical plates may be used to accomplish this goal. Why would a person need this type of surgery and what should one expect when they opt for this treatment option?
One of the most complex and fascinating things in the human body is the brain. The body is “capable of almost everything, but it would not be possible, without the brain receiving information, and analyzing the information.”
