Effects of Education through Culture Clash
My skin should not define me… but it does. My proficiency should not determine my intelligence but it does. Judith Cofer once said, “The way our teachers and classmates looked at us that day in school was just a taste of the culture clash that awaited us in the real world.” Not only does culture clash affect people on a personal level but the effects of education can be affected on an academic and personal level. Culture clash causes a chain of events to occur such as racism and discrimination based on skin color and proficiency. This discrimination affects people's academics, education, and overall knowledge which causes financial disadvantages and lifestyle struggles. Education and Lifestyle knowledge has become essential to success not just to foreigners but everyone. School is not necessary but it is possible to learn things every day.. Whether it was caused by an action resorting to learning something or reading on any topic you desire. A variety of obstacles can occur from preventing you to thrive intellectually. Racism is an issue that has been going on for centuries which often leads to segregation and discrimination. People get judged by their skin color, overall knowledge, and prowess (proficiency). Segregation based on Racism causes people from wanting to exceed in life, often making you feel unfit in society. Just like many women, Cofer also believed “There are, however, thousands of Latinas without the privilege of
Cultural tendencies have a huge impact on the way children tend to participate in educational activities. The ethnicity of a child may change the way that teacher view a child. Suppose you had an Asian child in previous years who was quiet and reserved. You get a new child, you expect this one to be the same way, but he is not. We as teachers have to learn that each child is their own individual self, and they do not act the same way, no matter what race, gender, or social status they are.
Anthropologists have always had their discrepancies with the word culture and its background significance. There have been numerous definitions that have filtered through the field, yet not one that everyone can accept or agree with. Franz Boas, an anthropologist in the early 20th Century, and his students, had a difficult time figuring out the objective of what culture is. Culture is about learning and shared ideas about behaviour. Although Boas and his students had a slightly different idea in mind. They ultimately reached a conclusion, a definition of culture in their view that is a contradiction in terms. Boas sates that, “ culture was expressed through the medium of language but was not reducible to it;
Over the past 100 years, the United States has changed the way it views other cultures including more respect, equality, and freedom for all people. As much as America has grown, has America really changed that drastically? Across the nation and world, cultural differences still exist, misunderstandings continue, and fighting persists. Recent attacks within the United States that are similar to the conflicts between the Japanese and Americans in the early 1900’s include the 9/11 attack, the bombing at the Boston Marathon, and the mass shooting in Orlando.
The meaning of discrimination/segregation is a disliking matter African Americans would just want to be seen as some friendly faces instead of a criminals, gang members, and thieves. Rather than being thought as drug lords, human traffickers, and rapists, Latins would prefer to recognized as humble hardworking beings. Everyone that is not white would love to have equal rights, have no harm come their way because of their appearance, to just be seen as whites are. Yet, disgracefully that is not how life is, society has not developed to the point where society doesn't judge based on someone looks or race. If humans don’t put their minds to eliminating racism that means that it will be here to stay.
A person’s ethnicity can play an important role in their success. A person’s cultural background can cause a certain work ethic, determine ones diligence, and success in the classroom.
For centuries, racism has become the universal epitome of culture, despite the efforts of various civilizations, such as the Western and European to combat these indifferences among people. A race is specific social group that can be differentiated through various ways, from facial features and hair textures, to social norms and habits that constitutes to that group. These differences contribute to our uniqueness and humanity. Because people can be grouped by any number of differences, Man, lead by his ignorance, perpetuated the issue once social-hierarchies began to develop, splitting society to its various groups. As a result, social disparity from one’s upbringing became the common tendency to look down, or look up at people of other
In today’s society us humans are so distinct with one another, when it comes to our norms, beliefs, representations of our groups, even material goods representing these groups. This in short, is culture “The values, norms and material characteristic of a given group...one of the most distinctive properties of human social association.” As stated in Chapter 2 “Culture and Society” under “Sociology-The Basics”. Now, something else that has shaped society and changed it ultimately is race. That being, “..any group into which humans can be divided according to their shared physical or genetic characteristics” (Cambridge Dictionary). It seems evident to me that Culture is a deep, much more personal, changeable representation of a group or an individual.
When comparing cultures, one must form a definition of what culture is. Culture can be easily defined as the social behavior and normality’s found in human societies. It can also be easily made up of a composed arrangement of educated conduct and thought designs. Culture is a sorted out framework since it includes many parts. Throughout the world, there are many cultures that are both very different and also very similar. "Culture encompasses religion, food, what we wear, how we wear it, our language, marriage, music, what we believe is right or wrong, how we sit at table, how we greet visitors, how we behave and one million other things." (Cristina De Rossi.)
In the USA, it seems as though there is always a revolution going on. The world is changing everyday. Everyday there is something new going on. Everyday there are people fighting for what they believe in, from social movements to political movements. Everyday people are working hard for their future. People are just trying to make it in the real world. In the the 1930’s, there was so much going on, from WWI to the depression. The world was in a slump, and people were doing everything they could to make it. The cultural front involves history on the ordinary person, politics, and literature. I wish to compare some of the problems of today, with the problems of the past, discussing politics, culture, hegemony, and
What comes up on mind when someone think about two cultures colliding? Sure they get a lot of negative thoughts about it. Well, culture collisions are not always something that can ruin your life. The school atmosphere was different I was hanging with Caucasian girls and the African American children did not understand what I was doing being so close to children opposite of my own culture. At that point, I was unsure of what their problem was but realized they were sheltered from other cultures and raised differently. This caused several fights as a child because other children would call me a “little white girl” and I had no idea of what that meant and was offended. I was raised around majority boys in the neighborhood, until I started playing softball, some would consider me as a tomboy. So
Understanding where one has derived from, how the path was set for one’s purpose, and the how cultural beliefs, values, and views are indicative of the family structure, is important. This literature will provide information on the importance of history in shaping culture and communication; and how it affects the family, specifically my family. Insight surrounding some experiences my family has endured throughout generations, and how such experiences have helped to shape the cultural beliefs, values and views that have been passed down through generations, along with how the same experiences helped to shape cultural learning. Historically, culture and communication are important pillars for shaping the family foundation, but the specifics of gender roles, social skills, individualism, and collectivism are also important indicators of cultural beliefs, values, and views.
Things Fall Apart written by Chinua Achebe analizes the coming of the white man and its results on the culture of the people of Umuofia. The coming of the white man brought about culture conflict which affects the people of Umuofia's religion, their judicial system and their social life. Their lives are transformed in many different ways and change the perspective they have.
Cultural differences effect many aspects of our daily lives. With the many different cultures embedded in the United States, it is important that everyone has an understanding and respect for the melting pot that is encountered daily in our communities, workplaces and schools.
Globalization simply defined is the intensification of global interactions. The case studies we have studied depict two of the main types of globalization. Economic Globalization, which is the production, exchange, distribution, and consumption of goods and tangible services, and Cultural Globalization, the exchange of materials and symbols that represent facts, meaning values and beliefs. When Globalization occurs it usually has a major impact on indigenous cultures. Optimists or “champions” state that the relationship between culture and globalization has positive effects as it creates a balance between nations. Conversely, critics state that relationships between the two have negative effects, leading to the loss or deterioration of a
