Exploit. The Webster New World Dictionary defines exploit as, “To make use of; turn to account, utilize productively,” or more fatalistically put, “To make unethical use of for one’s own advantage or profit; specifically, to make profit from the labor of others without giving a just return” (Neufeldt & Guralnik 479). In 2012, the exploitation of a slave movie, which had a pronounced focus on the violence inflected onto black slaves, soared high and became one of the biggest film controversies of the 21st century. Why? Because the brilliant filmmaker, known as Quentin Tarantino, is a white man. Now knowing this, is Django Unchained racist? Django Unchained is a unique movie which could be classified as a western, a “Spaghetti Western,” if you will. It could also be called a “Southern” because it is set in the deep south pre-civil war rather than the wild west. Until about half way through the movie when it becomes a violent, revenge melodrama. The film follows the story of a slave named Django who is freed by Dr. King Shultz; who is a retired German dentist who just so happens to now be a bounty hunter. Dr. Shultz makes Django an offer that he couldn’t refuse. Dr. Shultz and Django travel the South recovering a few bounties and a friendship between the two men blossomed. Their friendship continues to flourish throughout the winter and into the spring when the two men make the journey to rescue Django’s wife from a sadistic plantation owner. Imagine being a black person
This movie held a great bias to the Southerners. There was one major Northern character, Chamberlain, comparing to the numerous southern gentleman. ‘Stonewall’ Jackson was the main character in this movie and the movie seemed to be trying to make the movie a biography of Jackson during the Civil War.
The concept art imitates life is crucial to film directors who express their views on political and social issues in film. In regard to film studies, race is a topic rare in many films. Like America, many films simply refuse to address this topic for various reasons. However, more recently, Jordan Peele’s 2017 box office hit Get Out explicates contemporary race relations in America. In the form of an unconventional comedy horror, Get Out is intricate in its depiction of white liberal attitudes towards African Americans. In short, Get Out suggests a form of covert racism existing in a post- Jim Crow era. Similarly, Eduardo Bonilla- Silva’s book Racism Without Racists acknowledges the contemporary system of racism or “new racism,” a system
The film set in the deep South in 1858, about a slave who gains his freedom with the help of Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz), a German bounty hunter, and sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner is an intriguing story with very graphic action scenes. The plot of the story begins as Dr. Shultz buys Django (Jamie Foxx), a black slave, from some traveling slave owners. He buys Django because he is chasing a pair of outlaws known as the Brittle Brothers and Django is the only person who knows what they look like. As the plot develops, Dr. Schultz and Django become allies and work together to achieve each other’s personal goals; Dr. Schultz wants to track down and
American History X is clearly a film dealing with racism. The interesting thing about this film is the way in which the subject is treated. First of all, it is obvious that, though racism is always a difficult subject to deal with, American History X presents it without any reservations or dumming down. Second, the film's figurehead for racism, Derek Vinyard (Edward Norton), is not an unintelligent redneck racist as films often portray them, but is in fact well-spoken, charismatic and intelligent, although he clearly holds ideals that are terribly wrong. Finally, the film shows that it is not just the white, neo-nazi racists who are fools to be involved in this, but all racism is foolish. Through these methods, the film shows the viewer,
The Free State of Jones is a movie that tells the true story of a man named Newton King, a deserter from the south who along with several other men like himself and runaway slaves who during the civil war held a rebellion against the south. Which include annexed three county which they managed to hold until the end of the war. This story gives us a portrait of a man who surprisely would not be called a typical southerner by some. He didn't believe in slavery and was a medic when he served with the confederacy instead of defending the south through fighting. Another thing that also figure into why he did what he did when it came to deserting and rebellion is a law called the Twenty Slave:
Of course, Django arrives at Candie’s plantation in order to rescue his wife, Broomhilda, and to also free her from slavery. Tarantino presents the traditional patriarchal characterization of Django as a masculine hero saving a submissive and powerless woman from danger. This gender approach defines traditional gender divisions in America society, which have been fund to be an issue in regards to a study done by Meyer and Wood (2013) on the negative perception of queer identity by male viewers of the teen show, “Glee”: “In day-to-day life, they keep their fandom secret in order to avoid a perceived stigma by non-gay (or masculine) viewers” (443). In this study, Meyer and Wood (2013) confirm male fears of being identified as “gay” by watching Glee, which is reinforced in the hyper-masculinity of Django’s personality as an aggressive male seeking to save his submissive wife from slavery. In this manner, Tarantino's film provides an extremely conservative view of gender roles, which depicts Django as the patriarchal hero in contrast to the submissive female role of Broomhilda as a captive of an evil plantation owner. These are the important characteristics of Django and Broomhilda’s gender orientation in Django Unchained by Quentin
When comparing the two films you can delve deep below the surface and begin to question how much of what we perceive as racism is actually racist or just general bigotry and self-importance. And how much of what we perceive as innocent is in fact insidious by nature. Tarantino switches things around and makes Django, a black male; the main protagonist of the film. By the end of the film he is the sole male survivor and therefore superior to the white characters. While Aladdin, a film about Arabs, has white American voices cast for all of the characters. The villain is the only Arab looking main character, while the hero and heroine are drawn with more Western features or skin colour, “Aladdin looks and sounds like a fresh-faced American boy.” (Brunette et. al. 2006, p. 2).
[4] Disney even goes on further to suggest that their intentions have a modern relevance when they say that “It is an important message to a generation to stop fighting, stop killing each other because of the color of your skin” (Pocahontas 37). It is quite clear that Disney never intended to write or rewrite history, as they have been so viciously attacked for doing. They are writing about tolerance and understanding, while at the same time they are giving back some respect to the indigenous people of America. James Pentecost, the producer of the film, feels that “moviemakers shouldn’t be handcuffed when using real stories as jumping-off places for works of entertainment” (Kim 24). Disney simply liked the idea of Pocahontas; they liked the message that it conveyed, and they made it applicable to Hollywood.
Following the end of the United States’ Civil War, new territories had becomes states, notably what is now known as the West. The West, iconized by its Cowboys, gunfights, and horses in the years that followed the Civil War, made its way to the silver screen as one of the first genres of movies to be produced. The genre is popularized as a “Western” and is devoted to telling the
During the intensity of the Civil War, Southern states in the Confederacy fought against the Union for their traditions and beliefs. However, not all citizens of the Confederacy were willing to fight for the South’s right to maintain slavery. One man, Newton Knight of Mississippi, deserted the Confederate army and even took up arms against the Confederacy. The movie covers Newton Knight’s journey as he and his allies gained control of Jones County in Mississippi and seceded from the South, effectively rejecting the Confederacy in favor of the Union. The movie focuses on the events surrounding Knight’s rebellion against the Confederacy, but it begins with Newton Knight as a soldier of the Confederate army.
In this movie the African Americans were treated nicely but in reality they did not feel this way. The masters mistreated their slaves but in the movie they were actually having conversations. There is a scene in the movie where a group of African Americans were shaking hands with the white Americans. The producer of the movie wanted to inform others that the “birth” of America was founded on the basis of equality rather than discrimination. If the producer of the movie did not show how the slaves were mistreated, the people will just see the world in only that point of view; the slaves’ point of view does not exist. Ruling countries oppressed both the undeveloped, barren places and the African Americans. The Birth of the Nation is a perfect example of a form of travel writing; the Americans wanted to inform others about America but this movie was only produced in their perspective. Rather than recording the reality, the produces or writers record history with the input of their own influences.
actually address the historical legacy of slavery, Lin Manuel Miranda’s casting brought light to the misrepresentation of non-whites in media and history. Throughout history, minority races, specifically African-Americans and Hispanics, are often whitewashed into stereotypical themes; thug life, segregation, or the “bad guy”.
[2] For films concerning slavery, the role of the filmmaker as educator is substantially heightened. All too often slavery films categorically vilify whites as oppressive forces, polarizing race and stereotyping the white
To conclude, the movie is full of suspense, violence, racism, and good humor to forget about all the bad things about it. Based on my analysis, Many of the social concepts, and theories regarding the movie Django Unchained
