In today’s society, we as a nation showcase our lives through social media. The case, Elonis vs. The United States, the petitioner, Anthony Douglas Elonis, is no different. He was an inspiring rap artist and was using Facebook as a platform to share his lyrics. After his divorce, things got out of hand. He started to post threatful lyrics about his wife, co-workers, and a kindergarten school. One of his friends saw these post and decided to report it. The FBI ended up getting involved and before long Elonis found out and started to post about the FBI agent. The FBI then had enough of it, so they arrested him. At the lower court the jury of his peers felt that the post constituted a reasonable threat and sentenced him to 44 months in prison. He, of course, appealed it, sending it to the Supreme Court, saying that his intent was not threatful. The Supreme …show more content…
This form of sharing is generally intended to generate a response from others. With all things in life not everything is going to be one-sided. We will get responses that are not positive towards our intentions. Even on private pages our thoughts and ideas become public. Screenshots are taken and shared with the world. We have to be careful how we share and what we share. Especially, in a professional setting. This case is a prime example of such. In conclusion, we can walk away from this case. We learn from this case not everything that is useful is helpful. Elonis artistic ability to write lyrics was certainly useful to his career, but it was not helpful in advancing his career. We can learn that words do indeed hurt those around us. In this case, even the fan who followed Elonis was in some way hurt by these lyrics. He was concerned enough to take time out of his day and report his concerns. We learned that we need to not be such an impulsive society when it comes to social media, but to think things through
In Gregory Maguire's novel, Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West happen before the novel by L. Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. In Baum’s novel of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, portrays the role of the Wicked Witch of the West being wicked. We have no background or personal preference to understand her life of the Wicked Witch of the West (as known as Elphaba). But in Maguire’s novel, Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, shows how Elphaba traits of a monster are similar to a typical monster that portrays in people's eye. Elphaba is an ideal model of what we see in a monster would be like: abnormal, scary looking, and blunt behavior. She is a target of gossip to those who do not even know
In today’s world, social media have a part in many people lives. Social media allow people to express themselves however and whenever they want. This is exactly what Anthony Elonis did. After a divorce Elonis claimed he adopted the rap persona Tone Dougie and posted long rants in the form of rap lyrics on Facebook. These rants expressed violence and killings. Elonis also stated “Art is about pushing limits, I’m willing to go to jail for my constitutional rights.” He also posts disclaimers or indications that his rants were aspired to be art or therapy .Although The First Amendment guarantees our right of free speech, a statement of an intention to inflict pain, injury, damage, or other hostile action on someone should be considered a threat whether its face to face or through social media. Freedom of speech end and become a specific threat to another person when you direct a violent act toward anyone. As a consequence of his Facebook post, Anthony D. Elonis was indicted with five counts of making threats.
adventure. I’ve been there with him through thick and thin but that was until he was taken away by the police on to the cattle cars. We didn't know where we were going but ended up in a place called a concentration camp. This adventure was not an exciting one but I saw soldiers separating John from his parents and eventually they separated me from John. I was thrown away with all these other shoes who also led their owners to a strange “shower” that was rumored to have led them to no longer be with us anymore. All of the shoes that have been thrown away feel the same pain and we wait for our owners to come back so we can be reunited.
The supreme ruler and king of gods, Zeus, is often mentioned as Jupiter and the sender of thunder, lightning, rain, and wind (Britannica.com). “Zeus was the first of the gods and a very imposing figure. Often referred to as ‘the father of gods and men,’ he is a sky god who controls lightning.” (Britannica.com) Although the god is labeled most powerful and the mightiest of all, he is not perfect. Zeus is known for his promiscuous action. Often times he fell in love with one woman after the other and attempted to disguise his infidelity from his wife. Zeus left no woman behind in his crazy love-life, the god married and had children with his sister, Hera and. Hera was not Zeus’ only siblings. He also had two brothers, Poseidon and Hades and another sister named Hestia. His parents are known as Cronus and Rhea. Zeus was not just handed the title “god of the sky,” instead him and his two brothers drew lots. The sea was given to Poseidon, the underworld to Hades, and Zeus was named lord of the sky, rain god, and cloud gatherer. The eagle is considered sacred to this god. Zeus also treasures the oak tree. It is often told that the gods will was revealed by the rustling of the oak tree. (Hamilton 27)
The ancient Greek and Roman civilizations of Europe began to progress toward a more civilized order of society. As there were no previous establishment to base their ideals on, it was understandable that there were some difficulties in their progression as a society. Although the ancient Greek and Roman governments fell, both had similar paths of creation, conquest, and destruction.
The Supreme Court case, Packingham v. North Carolina (2016) debates whether convicted and registered sex offenders should be limited in their social media usage on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, which are most predominantly populated by minors. The constitutionality of North Carolina’s criminal law is being debated as it considers it a felony for any person registered as a sex offender in the state of North Carolina to have an account on social media sites such as Facebook, or any social media platforms that allow minors to have an account. The current North Carolina law is unconstitutional as it limits a clear example of free speech, and does so in a very broad and unjustified way,

These threatening posts resulted in the Elonis v. Untied States case, wherein Elonis was ultimately convicted of four of the five counts of violating 18 U.S.C. § 875(c), despite Elonis’ plea for the court to dismiss the charges under the claim that his threats were not “true threats” (Facts and Case Summary - Elonis v. U.S., 2015).
In the case of the State of North Carolina v. Lester Gerard Packingham, the question of whether a state can restrict sex offender’s from being on social media sites without restricting their constitutional rights is played out. Lester Packingham is a registered sex offender who was caught having a Facebook website profile even though it is against North Carolina state law. This paper will explore the constitutionality of N.C. Gen Stat. § 14–202.5 (2011) and will analyze the legal opinions of this case from both the Court of Appeals of North Carolina and Supreme Court of North Carolina and make an educated decision on whether the Supreme Court of North Carolina’s decision should be upheld or reversed.
The petitioner was convicted in the district court for the southern district of california under eight-count indictment charging him with transmitting wagering information by telephone from Los Angeles to Miami and Boston, in violation of a federal statute (Hall, 2016.) During trial the government was permitted over the petitioner’s objection, to introduce evidence of the petitioner’s end of telephone conversations, overheard by FBI agents who had attached an electronic listening device to the outside of the public telephone booth from which he had placed his calls (Hall, 2016.) During the conviction, the Court of Appeals rejected the contention that the recordings had been obtained in a violation of the Fourth Amendment rights, because there was no physical entry (Hall, 2016.)
Zeus, most likely the most renowned god of all gods, the mighty god of lightning has taken part in some of the most widely known myths of all times. Zeus has taken part in many Greek and Roman myths alike, either as Zeus or as his Roman counterpart of Jupiter. Unlike most gods in mythology though, Zeus is the main character in almost all of the myths he is mentioned in. Whether the myth is about his epic clash against the Titans, his fight against the Giants or even about his extramarital affairs, Zeus always seems to come out of these conflicts unaffected and triumphant. When examining Zeus’ character though, it is important to note that Zeus is a god that exhibits human characteristics throughout most of his myths. Growth is one of the
The emergence of the Internet in the 21st century has dramatically changed how we communicate. It has opened a new avenue for facilitating human interaction. Information that would otherwise take hours or even days to be made public, now take seconds with a click of a button. Is this good or bad? What are the consequences of rapid-fire quick communication style that we have adopted? In articles “How Black Lives Matter Uses Social Media to Fight The Power,” and “The Attorney Fighting Revenge Porn,” authors Bijan Stephen and Margaret Talbot, discuss the pros and cons. Stephen discusses new mass mobilization structures social media has provided for social activists, while Talbot reflects on a new type of sexual harassment as a consequence of the

My first reaction to Egalia’s Daughters, by Gerd Brantenberg, was something like "WHAT is this". I was immediately very confused, and had no idea what this author was writing about. In fact, I felt as though I opened the book to the middle of a story, and became turned off by the whole experience. It took about three chapters, and someone’s help, until I started to read the book understandably, with ease, and began to enjoy the world I was entering. It became very apparent that I would have to detach myself from all that I thought I knew about gender, and simply allow myself to take in the message Brantenberg was trying to
Parmenides of Elea discusses the meta-theoretical issue of what can be legitimately thought and said. In his writings, Parmenides asserts that anything rationally conceivable must exist. In turn, anything non-existent can neither be thought of nor said. Furthermore, Parmenides rejects beliefs that are based on sensory experience. He believes that the senses deter us from recognizing genuine being, which can only be recognized through the use of reason. Although his argument seems to be logically sound, his theory proves unreasonable in the end.
