Throughout this group process everyone had their leadership moments however, I noticed that it was extremely easy to veer off topic. I myself noticed when asking a question regarding our topic, it lead to another topic and so forth. Consequently, this lead us to talk about our own personal issues for the majority of the time allotted in class to work on the project. I also noticed how every time we were allotted class time we would find something else to talk about and then briefly discuss the actual project. Unfortunately, myself and everyone contributed to this behavior by straying off topic more than once. Another setback in the group dynamic was the attendance. Our group meetings would have been more effective if everyone was able to attend. This definitely hurts the group dynamic but did not hinder us from working effectively. The lack of attendance did not help the communication among group members because everything was communicated thought text message or email. Another concern that was noted in the group was the lack of confidence when it came to publicly speaking. Unfortunately, this in addition to the lack of attendance created a poor dynamic for the group because if we all could not meet at least once how we're we going to be able to present a project that we had been working on the entire semester. More importantly by the end of all of our research we needed to display that we understood what we had learned throughout the entire semester. Therefore, having people in our group who are comfortable with public speaking and presenting is beneficial. Khari was able to make all of our group meetings and was comfortable publicly speaking, which was helpful because she too was very beneficial when it came to research for the project. She always had her laptop and was open to all ideas, I believe this positively influence the ability to effectively accomplish our group goals. Sometimes when you work in a group you have to understand everyone’s strengths and weaknesses. I learned a few new things about myself as well, such as how easy it was to come up with ideas for topics, but how hard it was for me to narrow those topics down. This was not effective for our group because it encouraged the group to
Participating in group activities have never really been my thing, but this project was a great experience. I got the chance to meet individuals with different problem solving solutions than I, and the people I communicate with daily. This project helped me gain communication skills amongst others when trying to make a decision, and the process of coming to an agreement. The knowledge, skills, and abilities I demonstrated throughout the weeks have grown and boosted my confidence when partaking in a group setting. I learned that people are easily offended and it may be hard to steer away from it, but it can be done. Teamwork has always been easy for me because I offer more help than needed to my teammates. The panel discussion taught me that not everyone one wants help, but the opportunity for their opinions to be considered. Each tool I have gained from this experience will make it easier for me to engage with others in the near future in a mannerly way whether it is for a grade or not.
While working in our groups, I have noticed that we try to incorporate our class concepts during our meetings in order to make our meetings function smoothly. Also while working together, we have learned each other’s strengths and weaknesses, which we use when someone is better at a certain aspect. For example, one member is more creative so she created the background for our presentation and helped with the ideas for our activities. Working in groups can be challenging, but as a group we do our best to make sure we complete our tasks and stay focused.
Description of the situation, After receiving the IDs for the students in my group, I sent regular mail to arrange a meeting. The initial procedure of performing a role-play required a meeting among the individual participating. As explained by Tuckman and Jensen (1977), there are five stages of group development. These steps are determined as forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. Based on the Tuckman and Jensen (1977), development theory it is essential for a team to be coordinated when there is a task to be accomplished at a collaborative level. The purpose of the meeting was to allocate roles to everyone and introduced to each other. The people involved in the group were Consultant, dietarian, physiotherapist, occupation therapist, social worker, discharge nurse, (Mary’s daughter and son-in-law), adult nurse and diabetic nurse.
Communication between group members was essential to complete this project well and in a timely matter. We used the GroupMe phone application to discuss developments to the project and obstacles encountered. When group members could not meet during class, I made sure to get them caught up through the GroupMe app immediately. I feel my leadership and organization was necessary to get certain group members to contribute to the project. Overall, I was satisfied with the group
Communication competence is the first thing every new group member should understand before beginning a group project. Communication competence is “considered very broadly as an impression that behavior is appropriate and effective in a given context” (Spitzberg, 2000). This includes being effective by having a wide range of behaviors and being in the “we”, not “me” mentality, being appropriate by complying with the group rules, have the knowledge to learn the rules and know how to be a proper asset in your group, having empathy or being sensitive towards your group members, staying committed to your group, and lastly being ethical. Our groups communication was very competent. When it came to group decision making, there was no hint of individuality, none of the members had a me mentality, but instead we all as a group put what we wanted aside to agree on a board game that would be the most appropriate for the assignment. For example, I wanted to play poker instead of monopoly but due to the fact that I was the only one in our group that knew how to play poker I quickly agreed with monopoly. Furthermore, all the group members showed commitment, and ethics. Many of us had a busy week schedule to include work and other classes so when we were able to settle on a time and date for a meeting everyone stayed committed to the schedule and arrived on time. While we had these group meetings and game nights everyone in the group was respectful towards each other by not making any rude remarks or aggressiveness when there was disagreement and being responsible by not attempting to cheat to win
This group had a decent amount of interactions between the group members and the speaker. There was little interaction amongst group members or with the facilitator during the group which may be due to the large group size. Due to where the leader was sitting and the large group size, it was difficult for members to hear; this resulted in a lack of presence from many group members. The group’s nonverbal behaviors were not strong; many seemed to be looking down or talking to one another rather than listening to the person speaking. There were also many distractions throughout the meeting which made it less effective than the others I attended. Member roles also became indistinguishable due to the groups size and lack of official structure. However, members that chose to participate did portray a more facilitative/building role (Gladding,
The continual meeting of the groups helped our overall development into a better flowing group. We each learned how to better interact with each other as the sessions went on and we became a better group in the process. One of the ways the group changes from the beginning was that we all became more comfortable sharing our thoughts and ideas with each other. In the beginning we did not know each other that well so it was hard to share ideas with each other, for fear of being judged or looked down on. But once we got to know each other and felt safe to talk about our own opinions and ideas, the group dynamic improved. The change was definitely a positive one and one that allowed us to challenge each others ideas or questions someones thought,
By reading all of our group summaries, I was able to identified the important point of all the chapters read. For example, all the chapters mentioned the implementation of a writing workshop in a classroom. Chapter twenty-one explained the challenges that teachers face when they try to run a writing workshop and follow a curriculum. However, the author explains that following a curriculum does not have to get in the way of the writing workshop. The goal of the writing workshop is to establish an ongoing workshop where students will initiate, pursue, and help each other. Another point that was mentioned in this chapter was that it is more important to have variety on writing assignment, than focusing more on spelling and grammar.
Testing schedules, small group arrangements, and device logistics would definitely be one of the many managerial-type tasks I would need to consider as a building leader. Even though getting started and coordinating a schedule that balance needs and wants were a little overwhelming at first, I was motivated by the challenge and felt that I was able to successfully accommodate input from the staff through the quick survey. One of the biggest accommodations we have been able to offer through this new schedule is a small group setting for children who receive an intervention service (special education or title). As a title teacher, I have proctored several of these small group sessions, in conversation with students they have told me they love
Being a member of a group helps develop interpersonal skills, such as speaking and listening, working with and motivating others and leadership. “ The interpersonal and organizational skills needed for managing a group project need to be highlighted in any assignment, so that students recognize the importance of such things as: listening, clarifying statements and providing good feedback; keeping discussions on task; probing assumptions and evidence; eliciting viewpoints and perspectives; mediating conflicts; and summarizing and presenting findings.” (Bosworth, 1994) These skills are very important to learn while in highschool, so that a strong communicational foundation is built for later in life, such as college and career opportunities. These communication skills also help with good team building skills, if one can communicate his/her thoughts more clearly to their peers then the team will be more fluid and able to solve the tasks at hand in a more timely fashion. This brings the argument to the need for a development in team working
Every moment there was a presentation. Ana wrote down important information so we don’t repeat the same mistake and do a great job. An example from our experience working together is that Maria tended to take extensive notes in group meetings, then the group chosen her to be the role recorder. Discussing who’s doing what and group member’s expectations for what they should do help the group identify any neglected areas or tasks. The principal purpose that chapter 5 discusses are “significant roles in groups, discuss the roles process, and discusses the effective leader in groups”. This shows that working in a group you should pay attention to your roles or follow directions. Throughout our project Bryan was telling each one what is supposed to be in the writing and presentation. One day Tyler message the group saying if we want him to check grammar, or repeated words and one person told it's okay. When Tyler completed, he sent to Maria so she can send it through one another email. Another example is that I had trouble figuring out what
This reflection paper is an analysis of my experience throughout this group project over the course Univ 1100. The purpose of working in groups is to build characteristics such as teamwork, reliability, trust, leadership & communication skills as well as learning new things based off of one another’s intelligence to prepare you for future jobs and etc. I was assigned to the group with Sydney, Dynasty, Sarena, Jyqueria, and Charlotte. We we’re assigned thee group project towards the beginning of the semester. We had to choose a social issue to write a paper on creating an image for students to understand what our topic was about, how it impacts the world, our feelings about it as a group and the importance of addressing it. For
The things I will have done differently in the group was to use my time wisely. I believe because we were on a time frame, I tended to rush things just to say okay where done. Also, more support and trust at a point of time I was kind of second guessing another idea. I feel that you have to have trust in your group member to make it effective.
My group consisted of four people. They were Allie Holley, Triana Stephens, Renee Philips, and myself. Overall, I would say that we all worked very well together. There were some bumps in the road, but I think we completed the task well.
Throughout the time spent amongst my fellow partners, it has been interesting to see how we work together. We all have very different ideas of work ethic, commitment, and time management, but, regardless of these differences, we still came out with a product that I deem to be great. It can be difficult working with a group of people with the intention of creating a presentation that is ten to fifteen minutes long. Rehearsing, generating ideas that everyone agrees with, conforming to different schedules, and crunching everything into the time span of a week, is very difficult. Just so you have the opportunity to further understand the dynamics of my group, I will answer some questions, kindly provided
