In 1942 innocent Japanese Americans were accused of being a threat to America and were then shipped to concentration camps. They were forced to give up their homes, businesses and land. President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 to allow the unjust and unlawful internment of Japanese-Americans (Stanford History Education Group 6). The evacuation of Japanese-Americans is still argued justified or unjustified by professionals today. The internment of Japanese-Americans was unjustified because Americans acted on race prejudice, war hysteria, and fear of Japan.
The reason why interment is unjust is because of racial discrimination. Pearl Harbor caused many Americans to be very anti-Japanese in 1941. “Color seems to be the only possible reason why thousands of American citizens of Japanese ancestry are in concentration camps” (Howard 3). The Americans were furious about the attack on Pearl Harbor which set them against anyone of Japanese ancestry.“The Japanese are hampered as saboteurs because of their easily recognized physical appearance”(Curtis B. Munson 2). The Japanese Americans have distinct faces which sets them apart from Americans. Americans segregated the Japanese Americans before the Japanese were sent to the concentration camps. “The broad historical causes which shaped these decisions were race prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political leadership (Commision on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians 5). This shows that the decisions were made because people were afraid. Also the people of America were afraid of entering the second world war. “Military authorities feared an invasion.” (Black 4).
