Sherman Alexie, in “Indian Education” tells his experiences in school on the reservation. Some of his teachers did not treat him very good and did not try to understand him. In his ninth grade year he collapsed. A teacher assumed that he had been drinking just because he was Native American. The teacher said, “What’s that boy been drinking? I know all about these Indian kids. They start drinking real young.” Sherman Alexie didn’t listen to the negatives in school. He persevered and became valedictorian of his school.

Adjusting to another culture is a difficult concept, especially for children in their school classrooms. In Sherman Alexie’s, “Indian Education,” he discusses the different stages of a Native Americans childhood compared to his white counterparts. He is describing the schooling of a child, Victor, in an American Indian reservation, grade by grade. He uses a few different examples of satire and irony, in which could be viewed in completely different ways, expressing different feelings to the reader. One of the main obstacles Junior overcomes is stereotypes. Junior is an Indian who lives on a reservation. Indians have many stereotypes that are towards them. “Superman and Me” by Sherman Alexie gives insight into his early life of being Spokane Indian living on a reservation who taught himself to read at a very young age. Despite his ability to read so early he was treated as an outside or “oddity” in his community and the world surrounding him because of cultural diversity and issues between his peers and those who weren't part of his culture. The author specifically states “A smart Indian is a dangerous person, widely feared and ridiculed by Indians and Non-Indians alike”; which informs the reader that an educated Indian isn't accepted in really either cultures which sets him as an outcast in both societies. The author describes his younger self as smart, arrogant, Indian boy who without books wouldn't be educated and wouldn't be what he is today.

All these people have different past and things they’re going through. East Tennessee State University (ETSU) is a public, coeducational institution situated in Northeast Tennessee. It is one of the campuses that is governed by the Tennessee Board of Regents. Its main campus is in Johnson City, with other centers in Kingsport, Elizabethton and Bristol. It was founded in 1911 with the name East Tennessee Normal School, aimed at educating their graduates to become teachers. The institution received university status in 1963 with accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (ETSU, 2016).

Baylor has always had a place in my heart, even before I visited the campus. I would wear Baylor shirts each day to class and even cheer for the Baylor football team. Many people were astonished that I would want to apply to a university that was eighteen hours away. I have always wanted to find a university that honored the Christian faith. Finding a university in North Carolina just like Baylor's similarities is uncommon. North Carolina is known for top universities including Duke University, Wake Forest University, and the University of North Carolina; but none of those seem to have what I wanted. My parents’ main motivation for moving back to India was because they wanted us to embrace our traditions, and most importantly, value our family relationships. We relocated back to the US at the start of 9th grade. This transition was a huge factor for transforming me as a person. This is very high, especially when compared to the white or Asian dropout rates- five and three percent, respectively. Additionally, it says Native Americans have the second lowest percentage of bachelor’s degrees, only seventeen percent, compared to the two highest, white and Asian, at thirty three and fifty percent (Krogstad).
